Japanese Superfecta In UAE Derby, As Mind Your Biscuits’s Derma Sotogake Romps

Japan entered five colts in the $1-million G2 UAE Derby, and they filled the first four home, as DERMA SOTOGAKE (JPN) (Mind Your Biscuits-Amour Poesie {Jpn}, by King Kamehameha {Jpn}) punched his ticket for the GI Kentucky Derby in May. The race was worth 100 points to the winner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby series.

The 1 3/16-mile affair featured the handsome Irish raider Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road), who garnered favouritism before the off, but it was the winner, pressed by Dura Erede (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), who had the run of the race. Eventual third-place finisher Continuar (Jpn) (Drefong) was also close up, while Perriere (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) had some traffic issues that blunted his charge.

Essentially a carrousel, Derma Sotogake extended his advantage in the stretch, and it was open lengths between him and his rivals, with Dura Erede second and another gap back to Continuar in third and Perriere fourth.

The victory marked Japan's third UAE Derby and second consecutive, after Crown Pride (Jpn) (Reach The Crown {Jpn})'s heroics in 2022. Pilot Christophe Lemaire, regular pilot of G1 Dubai Turf victress Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), was along for the ride in the colours of Hiroyuki Asanuma. Hidetaka Otonashi trained the son of Amour Poesie.

Isolate, Gaffalione Take Out the Godolphin Mile

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES —  Making just his third start in Dubai and stretching out to a mile for the first time in over two years, RRR Racing's Isolate (Mark Valeski) never gave his 13 rivals in Saturday's G2 Godolphin Mile Sponsored by One Za'abeel as he put on a powerful front-running display to carry visiting jockey Tyler Gaffalione to an easy 5 1/2-length victory.

Not the fastest away from the stalls in the mile chute, the $70,000 Keeneland November weanling speared through from between horses to take up the running linking up with the course proper, as defending champion Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) and his countrymate Win Carnelian (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) put the pressure on the pacesetter from the outside. Always holding that pair at bay as the field raced into the final 600 meters, Isolate was about two lengths clear into the stretch and lengthened away to score impressively. Law of Peace (Ire) (Shamardal) and Atletico El Culano (Uru) (Alcorano {Brz}) each raced near the tail of the field early, but powered home to fill out the minor placings. Bathrat Leon just held fourth over American ex-pat Everfast (Take Charge Indy).

“Tyler did a great job getting him out and going, getting a nice pace on and he stays a mile, we can definitely say that now,” said trainer Doug Watson, winning this race for the third time. “I wasn't quite sure until he turned in and there wasn't much going with him.”

He added, “I'm just thrilled for Sheikh Rashid (bin Humaid al Nuaimi) and the whole team at home. I've been here for almost 30 years, I've progressed from being in charge of the ambulance at the first Dubai World Cup to now having winners on the night. It's quite remarkable.”

Campaigned in the States by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Isolate was a two-time winner and third in the 2020 GIII Nashua S. for Kathy Ritvo before being transferred to trainer Tom Amoss, for whom he tallied four races, including last year's Work All Week S. at Hawthorne and a romping score in the Tale of the Cat S. at Saratoga. Just touched off in the Louisville Thoroughbred Society S. in September, Isolate was acquired by these connections and his two lead-up races locally were solid runner-up efforts to Tuz (Oxbow) in the G3 Al Shindagha Sprint in February and to the commonly owned Sound Money (Flatter) in the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal S. on Super Saturday.

Pedigree Notes:

Isolate is one of three stakes winners and becomes the first graded winner for his sire (by Proud Citizen), who bred by, raced for and began his stud career at Airdrie Stud before ultimately relocating to Arkansas. Isolate is out of a winning daughter of seven-times stakes winner and three-times graded-placed Travelator, the dam of SWs Hollywood Jet (Uncaptured) and Stone Silent (Adios Charlie) and the dam of Grade III winner Last Judgement (Congrats). Tranquil Song is also responsible for a 2-year-old colt by Enticed and a colt by Tacitus foaled Mar. 1.

Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby Concludes at Nakayama

Sent off the 3-2 favorite, Mitono O (Jpn) (Logotype {Jpn}) led every step of the way en route to a 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday's nine-furlong Fukuryu S. (allowance) at rain-soaked Nakayama Racecourse. The win was worth 40 points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby and secures connections a berth in the Run for the Roses should they choose to accept.

Soon in front for jockey Takuya Kowata, the blaze-faced chestnut went along comfortably on the lead, cruising through an opening 800-meter split of :49 flat and six furlongs in 1:13.1. Always traveling like a winner, Mitono O cut the corner into the stretch, pinched an unassailable advantage and proved easily best as Mokku Mokku (Jpn) (Danon Legend {Jpn}) closed off well down the center while no threat to the winner. Hero Call (Jpn) (Hokko Tarumae {Jpn}) was third (see below, SC 7).

A maiden winner at first asking going this distance at Chukyo in August, Mitono O was runner-up to future Listed Hyacinth S. hero and G2 UAE Derby entrant Perriere (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) in a seven-furlong allowance at Tokyo Nov. 12. He was a course-and-distance allowance winner when last seen Jan. 7.

A son of multiple Canadian Grade III winner Seductively (Thunder Gulch), who was purchased by Shadai Farm for $535,000 in foal to Bernardini at Keeneland November in 2008, Mitono O was an ¥18,700,000 graduate of the 2021 Hokkaido Selection Yearling Sale. His win Saturday took his earnings to north of ¥36 million.

Should the Derby invite not be accepted by the first-place finisher, the bid will be offered to the second-, third- and fourth-placegetters. Perriere currently sits on 30 points, while fellow UAE Derby entrant Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) has 20 points courtesy of his victory in the Listed Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun in December. The UAE Derby is a Derby qualifier separate and apart from the Japanese series and offers the winner 100 points.

Racing Return in East View Easy Breezy for Maple Leaf Mel

Maple Leaf Mel (Cross Traffic) may have been gone since August last year, but she showed no signs of rust Friday as she floated home the easiest of winners in the East View S. at Aqueduct.

A five-length winner at first-asking Aug. 10 at Saratoga in a six panel, state-bred maiden dash over the fast main track, she returned 16 days later in the slop to duel her way to an open length victory in the state-bred restricted Seeking the Ante S. over familiar face Lady Mine (First Samurai), GSP Miracle (Mendelssohn), and another returning challenger in MSW Les Bon Temps.

Jumping well here as the heavy 1-5 favorite, Maple Leaf Mel showed the way down the backstretch, dictating all her own terms. In the two path around the bend and putting distance on the field without being asked, Maple Leaf Mel changed leads inside the three-sixteenths before drawing off by 7 3/4 lengths in the stretch to stylish return to winning ways.

“Joel [Rosario] has worked her the last couple of times down in Florida and I was happy that he wanted to come up and ride her–that gave me a lot of confidence. […] I left it [tactics] up to Joel. I don't think it matters with her,” said conditioner Jeremiah Engleheart. “I've worked her plenty of times as a 2-year-old behind horses and let her tip out and make a run. She's just a racehorse. If you put her there, she's going to try and repel everyone that comes to her. She likes to run. It's as simple as that. She likes to do what she's doing.”

As for trying open company down the road, Engleheart was hopeful the chance would arise. “Coach [Bill Parcells, owner of August Dawn Farm] wants to win a Grade I and my goal is to win a Grade I with her for him. We've talked about a couple different spots. The [state-bred] Bouwerie is an option, but it's a little further away than we wanted coming off this race.”

Out of a winning racemare, Maple Leaf Mel is a half to another multiple winner in Dr. Lloyd (The Lumber Guy), in addition to her stakes placed half'brother Eddie's Gift. They have a 2-year-old half-brother by Brody's Cause as the last registered foal under the dam thus far.
