Finger Lakes Adds Claiming Distance Series

Finger  Lakes has unveiled a claiming distance series to the line-up for its 2023 season. The series, named after North Warning, the current track record holder at 1 5/8 miles, kicks off June 19 and features three legs and a final, with distance increasing with each leg.

“We're very exciting about the upcoming racing season and the North Warning series,” Racing Secretary Jerry Richards said. “Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack has a long-time history of distance racing and I'm very happy to bring back some semblance from the past.”

The first leg of the series, to be run at one mile and 70 yards, carries a purse of $12,600 added per division, and will be run as a $5,000 claimer. The claiming price increases to $6,250 for leg two and the purse amount moves to $15,000 added. Leg two, scheduled for July 31, is to be run at 1 1/8 miles. The claiming price increases again to $8,000 for leg three and will be run Sept. 11 at the Classic distance of 1 1/4 miles. The purse will grow to $20,000 for that event.

The series final is set for Oct. 23 at one mile and five and a half furlongs and will be run under starter ($8,000 or less) conditions. The purse in the finals is guaranteed at $25,000.

There is a one-time $250 nomination fee, which is due by June 7. All nomination fees will be added to the purse for legs one and two. Supplemental fees will be accepted between June 8 through July 19 and will be added to leg 3. The cost to supplement to the series is $1,000.

Horses earn their way into the final by earning points throughout the preliminary legs with four points for a win, three points for a second, two points for a third and one point for fourth. The top 12-point earners from the preliminary legs make the finals. In the event of a claim, the points follow the horse.

Finger Lakes' 90-day season kicks off Apr. 24 and runs through Nov. 22. First post is 1:15 p.m.

Bolt d’Oro Filly Stays Perfect at Santa Anita

7th-Santa Anita, $72,500, Alw (NW1$X)/Opt. Clm ($100,000), 3-27, 3yo, f, 7f, 1:22.07, ft, 2 lengths.
ANYWHO (f, 3, Bolt d'Oro–Fancy and Flashy {SP}, by Zensational) , making her first start in the Hronis Racing colors, took her record to a perfect two-for-two with a determined victory at Santa Anita Monday. The 9-2 shot prompted the pace of longshot Liberal Lady (Mor Spirit), quickened on the bend to challenge the pacesetter and grabbed the lead into the stretch. She shrugged off favored Coffee in Bed (Curlin) down the lane and sailed under the wire two lengths in front.

Anywho debuted with a victory at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet last October for Rob Masiello and trainer Tom Albertrani before selling for $290,000 to the bid of bloodstock agent David Ingordo at last year's Keeneland November sale. She had originally been purchased by agent Joe Migliore for $300,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September sale.

The bay filly, a half-sister to graded-placed Wipe the Slate (Nyquist, GSP, $122,999), has a 2-year-old half-brother by Catholic Boy–who sold to bloodstock agent Alistair Roden for $55,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale–as well as a yearling half-sister by McKinzie. Stakes-placed Fancy and Flashy was bred to Maxfield last year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $95,450.

Plaintiffs in Louisiana Lawsuit Make Case for Allowing Amended Complaint

The plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit spearheaded by the state of Louisiana against the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) Authority and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fired the latest salvo Monday, arguing in a filing that the judge should not accede to the defendants' request to strike a recently amended version of the complaint that expands the slate of plaintiffs by letting new entities join the case.

“Defendants suggest that Plaintiffs engage in something sinister by seeking amendment to request expanded relief,” stated the Mar. 27 memorandum filed in United States District Court (Western District of Louisiana). “But parties across the country routinely amend to seek expanded relief without issue.”

Back on Feb. 6, the plaintiffs filed an amended complaint to their original June 29, 2022, lawsuit, with the chief changes involving the addition of 14 new individual Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) affiliates, plus a wide swath of states, racing commissions, and individual racetracks.

Then, in a Mar. 6 motion, the HISA defendants asked the judge to strike that amended complaint on the basis that adding a “vast number” of organizations and states as new plaintiffs constituted an allegedly “blatant attempt” at “gamesmanship” and “shotgun” litigation.

The plaintiffs' Mar. 27 filing disputed those characterizations and argued for the amended complaint to proceed.

“Defendants' motion is unwarranted and amendment is proper as a matter of right at this early stage in the case,” the plaintiffs' filing stated.

“Leave to amend is also proper to allow parties who have been waiting for months to participate in this litigation to seek redress. [The amended version] both addresses HISA rules approved after Plaintiffs filed the initial complaint and adds more parties who have suffered harm from those rules,” the memorandum stated.

“Procedural squabbles aside, [the HISA Authority's] unlawful regulations pose a litany of issues requiring redress,” the plaintiffs stated.
