Charles Town Jockey Fined A Grand For Deep-Stretch Gaffe

Jockey Carlos Eduardo Lopez, currently third in earnings and fourth in wins at Charles Town Races this year, was fined $1,000 by the track's stewards for losing a win at the wire after his mount was clear by five lengths at the sixteenth pole and he apparently thought he could coast to victory without additional effort.

“Jockey Lopez eased his mount, Stylish Paint, coming to the wire in the ninth race on Saturday, Apr. 8, 2023, causing his horse to get beat on the wire,” stated the Apr. 14 stewards' ruling. It was unclear at deadline for this story if Lopez would be appealing the fine.

Lopez, 32, knows Stylish Paint well, having ridden the 6-year-old Paynter mare for owner/trainer Ronney Brown in nine of her last eleven races dating back over a year, a span during which he twice won aboard her by narrow margins of a nose and a head.

But he ended up on the wrong end of the photo finish in the ninth and final race Apr. 8, a $5,000 claimer over seven furlongs that attracted a $53,250 win pool and was the concluding leg of double, pick three, pick four and pick five pools.

After pressing the pacemaker into submission, the 3-1 Stylish Paint took over with a half-furlong to go. The 3-2 favorite, China Cat (Justin Phillip), was gaining under Andre Ramgeet, but was seemingly left with too much work to do to win.

Lopez chose to hand-ride Stylish Paint after making the lead, then geared her down as the line loomed. But Ramgeet continued driving with China Cat, apparently catching his rival unaware at the finish.

“Oh, it got very close! Carlos Lopez thought he had it won on Stylish Paint, and it got very tight on the wire!” announcer Paul Espinosa, Jr., exclaimed in his race call.

The Equibase chart stated that Stylish Paint “dueled for the nod nearing mid-stretch and drew briefly clear, was allowed to relax in late yards and was nipped under the wire.”

Key Of Life Just Hangs On In Beaumont

The model of consistency in her young career, Key of Life (Mo Town) turned in another gutsy performance Sunday with a coast-to-coast win in the GII Beaumont S., the final race in the 2023 Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Never off the board in her seven prior starts, including a three-race win streak last Fall at both Churchill Downs and Keeneland, the $350,000 OBS April grad entered off a 3 1/4-length score in Oaklawn's Purple Martin S. where she posted a career-best 91 Beyer Speed Figure.

Bet like a sure thing at 2-5, Key of Life cruised to the early lead right from the jump despite her outside gate and cleared down just off the rail with Opus Forty Two (Mendelssohn) and Stonewall Star (Flatter) in hot pursuit a length back. Alone on the front end through swift opening fractions of :22.24 and :44.87, Key of Life hit the quarter pole looking as if the race was all but won. But further back in the field, Interpolate was coming with an eye-catching rally from fourth, circling up past both pursuers to move into second despite a wide run around the turn. With a furlong left to race and Key of Life still to catch, Interpolate kept grinding away, pulling within a neck but coming up just short as Key of Life found the wire first. With the win, Key of Life earned 10 points towards the GI Kentucky Oaks in less than three weeks time.

“She's very fast away from (the gate) and she's obviously got a lot of speed,” said winning trainer Brad Cox. “She likes Keeneland a lot. I like Keeneland and she likes Keeneland; she's three-for-three here. I'd like to congratulate (owners) Staton Flurry and Greg Hoffman (of Flurry Racing Stables and Hoffman Family Racing, respectively). This was a last-minute decision, so I want to commend those guys. I called them Tuesday and told them I was looking at this race. She was at Oaklawn, so it was a last-minute decision to bring her here and it worked out well. She had no graded black type, so that obviously was appealing. This (win) added a lot to her value and we're very proud of what she was able to accomplish today.”

Pedigree Notes:

The fourth winner from as many to make the races out of Longride to Wisdom, Key of Life traces back to MGSW and current Hill 'n' Dale stallion Kantharos (Lion Heart). She becomes the third graded-stakes winner for Mo Town whose first crop are now 3-year-olds.

Gaslight Dancer Burns Bright In Palisades S.

Taking to the Haggin Turf Course once again, 6-1 shot Gaslight Dancer recorded his first stakes victory of his career with a solid performance in the Palisades S. on Sunday afternoon.

Winning on the grass at Kentucky Downs Sept. 3 in his second career start, Gaslight Dancer was the favorite Oct. 9 in the GIII Futurity S. during the BAQ meet, only to lose by a neck to Nagirroc (Lea). With a tough test Nov. 4 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, he drew the fourteenth hole, but still turned in a respectable sixth.

Back at Keeneland in this spot, the $260,000 OBSAPR buy patiently waited his turn along the rail as Bushido (First Samurai) blazed a trail. Into the stretch, a trio of suitors vied for the lead, while the Mike Maker trainee cut to the outside. The bay colt flashed a nice turn of foot and passed his tiring rivals to win by 1 1/2 length over late-running 51-1 longshot Two of a Kind (Overanalyze).

“Looks pretty good,” trainer Mike Maker said about his horse's improvement over this past year. “I know last year he was pretty headstrong. [Today] he looked like he settled nice, saved ground and kicked home. Last year, he was all out wanting to go for the lead. I still think he'll stretch out to a mile.”

The first of his dam's progeny, the winner also has a 2-year-old half-brother named Moon Raid (Munnings). His dam is a half-sister to GSW Summer Raven (Summer Squall), who is responsible for MGSW Lewis Bay (Bernadini) and GIII Holy Bull S. victor Winslow Homer (Unbridled Song). The 8-year-old bay mare RNA'd last November for $250,000 at Keeneland while in foal to McKinzie.
