Horse of the Year Havre de Grace Passes Away

Havre de Grace (Saint Liam–Easter Bunnette, by Carson City), the 2011 Horse of the Year and Eclipse Award-winning older mare who sold to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for $10 million at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, passed away in the early morning hours of Apr. 30. Wayne Sweezey, who boarded Havre de Grace at his Timber Town Farm, confirmed that the 16-year-old mare hemorrhaged multiple times and died after producing a colt by Into Mischief the afternoon of Apr. 28.

“She was just so smart, she fought all the way to the end, so full of grace, like her name says,” an emotional Pope said via phone Sunday afternoon. “She was stoic right to the end. I am so grateful that I was able to be here, it would have been a great deal more difficult if I hadn't made it up.”

Bred in Kentucky by Nancy S. Dillman, Havre de Grace was a $380,000 Keeneland September purchase by the late Rick Porter and raced in the colors of Fox Hill Farms, finishing out of the top three just once in her 16 career starts. A leading 3-year-old of her generation in 2010, Havre de Grace was second to Blind Luck in that year's GI Alabama S. before turning the tables in the GII Fitz Dixon Cotillion S. and finishing third in the GI Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic. She was an even better filly at four, taking the GI Apple Blossom H. that April ahead of a victory versus the boys in the GI Woodward S. at Saratoga. A romping winner of the GI Beldame Invitational S., the bay was fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic and closed her career victoriously in the 2012 New Orleans Ladies Classic. She bankrolled $2,586,175.

Having been named Horse of the Year at the beginning of 2012, Havre de Grace was always going to be the pin-up horse at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, and so it proved, as Pope went to eight figures for the then 5-year-old from the Taylor Made draft.

“I don't know what to say,” Pope commented at the time. “She's beautiful. You look at her and she's everything a racehorse should be, she did everything a racehorse could do and she has a wonderful attitude. She's the epitome of what we're all trying to breed. Hopefully she'll pass that on to her foals.”

Underbidders were reported to include Frank Stronach, Besilu Stables' Ben Leon and Coolmore.

Including the Into Mischief colt, Havre de Grace has produced eight foals and five winners from as many to the races. Pope's affinity for Tapit is well-known, and five of Havre de Grace's first six foals are by the Gainesway star. The best of them is her filly of 2016, Graceful Princess, who won the 2021 GIII Molly Pitcher S. and who is also represented by an Into Mischief colt for her first foal this season. Those of Havre de Grace's foals that have been offered at public auction have been well-received, as River Front (War Front) was bought back on a bid of $1.9 million at KEESEP in 2016, while Marvelous Guide (Tapit) was sold for $550,000 at the same auction two years later. The mare is also represented by a 2-year-old Justify colt in addition to her newest foal, who seems to be handling the events of recent days in stride.

“The Into Mischief colt is a big horse and looks like he inherited her smarts,” she said. “He knew she was in trouble. After looking at her for a couple of hours, he wanted to lay down so we made him a bed of straw right out where she could see him.

“She was such a pleasure to be around, she was kind and friendly, but she didn't want people doting all over her,” Pope continued. “I remember watching her one day, there was a plane overhead and she just cocked her head and kind of took everything in, never turned a hair.”

There is plenty of Havre de Grace in her offspring, Pope said.

“I think she passed on her personality to her offspring and they are all smart like she is. Hopefully she'll be in the Hall of Fame one day.”

Havre de Grace was among the finalists for induction this August.

“Thanks to everyone at Timber Town and the three vets that did everything that they could to save her. I want to give special thanks to Dr. Charlie Scroggins and Dr. Laurie Metcalf.”

Sweezey said that they have already accessed a nurse mare and that the Into Mischief colt has accepted her.

Pope confirmed that Havre de Grace would be cremated, with some of her ashes to be spread across Timber Town joining America's Joy (American Pharoah), the half-sister to Into Mischief, Beholder and Mendelssohn who sadly died in the summer of 2021.

Ryvit Drills First Stakes Win At Oaklawn

Ryvit (Competitive Edge), recorded his third victory in-a-row at Oaklawn Park on Saturday afternoon and his first stakes win for the Heiligbrodts.

After a debut second Apr. 13 at Keeneland, the bay colt was third May 5 at Churchill Downs in the Kentucky Juvenile S. Taking a break, he returned to action in Hot Springs Feb. 18 and was a well-beaten sixth before winning against restricted auction company Mar. 25. Stepping up against optional claimers, the Steve Asmussen trainee won from off-the-pace by 2 lengths Apr. 14.

Facing a well-backed favorite in Mo Strike (Uncle Mo), Ryvit went off at odds of 5-2 and from the outset made his presence known by seizing the lead. Rounding the far turn, he distanced himself from the rest of the field and went to secure the victory by 2 lengths over the late-running chalk. GSW High Dollar Woman (Super Saver) is a half to the winner's dam. This is her first offspring to make the races, but she does have a 2-year-old colt by Collected.

Mastery Filly Dazzles at Laurel

7th-Laurel, $54,810, Alw (NW1X)/Opt. Clm ($50,000-$62,500), 4-29, 3yo, f, 7f, 1:24.47, gd, 10 1/4 lengths.

GOODGIRL BADHABITS (f, 3, Mastery–Dazzler, by Vindication), in a near carbon copy of her Mar. 10 debut over this surface, remained undefeated and proved a handy, open-daylight winner. The 1-5 choice swerved right at the break but shot immediately to the front and never let anyone close as she established a comfortable pace. After a first quarter in :23.18, a half in :46.53, and with her ears flicking on the turn, Goodgirl Badhabits kept rolling in the stretch as rider Jevian Toledo took a peek under his arm at the competition. There was none. He gave only the mildest of encouragement through the stretch to the dark bay as she cantered home a 10 1/4-length victress in the easiest of wins. Major Houlihan (Army Mule) finished best of the rest.

Goodgirl Badhabits broke her maiden last month, recovering from a bobbled break to set all the pace and power home 12 3/4 lengths the best at 5 1/2 furlongs. From the same extended family as champion and blue hen Serena's Song (Rahy), the winner is a half to Dazzling Gem (Misremembered), SW-PR, MGSP-USA, $508,303. Her dam has a 2-year-old filly by Palace Malice, who sold for $190,000 to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners at this week's OBS Spring sale, and a yearling filly by Global Campaign. She was bred to Knicks Go for this spring. Sales History: $135,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $63,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Dozen Kentucky Derby Hopefuls Breeze at Churchill Downs

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's likely GI Kentucky Derby favorite and last out GI Curlin Florida Derby winner Forte (Violence) headlined a busy morning beneath the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs as 12 candidates for this year's Run for the Roses turned in their final works for the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Last year's champion 2-year-old colt and 'TDN Rising Star' Forte, who worked a half-mile in company in :49.80 over a fast track, was one of four breezers for trainer Todd Pletcher. Other Pletcher half-mile workers were GI Blue Grass S. winner and 'Rising Star' Tapit Trice (Tapit) (:48.20) and unbeaten GII Louisiana Derby winner Kingsbarns (Uncle Mo) and GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks runner-up Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro), who worked together in :48.40.

“I'm very pleased,” Pletcher said. “They all did what they were supposed to do.”

Trainer Brad Cox also had four workers: GI Arkansas Derby winner Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) (five furlongs 1:01.40) and Louisiana Derby third and 'Rising Star' Jace's Road (Quality Road) (1:01.20) in company together and GII Wood Memorial S. second-place finisher Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}) (:59.60) and Blue Grass runner-up Verifying (Justify) (:59.40) in separate company.

“We're one week out from the race and they are important works, but we didn't want to ask them to do too much,” Cox said. “They did it on their own and did what we needed to see going into the Derby.”

Last out GII Rebel S. winner Confidence Game (Candy Ride {Arg}) worked five furlongs in :59 for trainer Keith Desormeaux, a move that was the fastest of 54 at the distance.

Florida Derby runner-up Mage (Good Magic) turned in a six-furlong work in 1:16.80 for trainer Gustavo Delgado.

Florida Derby third Cyclone Mischief (Into Mischief), currently on the outside looking in as the first also-eligible, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.80 for trainer Dale Romans.

Working before the first morning harrow break, fellow also-eligible and Arkansas Derby runner-up King Russell (Creative Cause) worked a half-mile in :47.80 for trainer Ron Moquett.

Working at Santa Anita was GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby third-place finisher Skinner (Curlin), who breezed six furlongs in 1:14 for trainer John Shirreffs. Skinner is scheduled to ship to Louisville on Sunday.

Two fillies put in their final works for the 149th running of the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks: GI Central Bank Ashland S. upsetter Defining Purpose (Cross Traffic) (a half-mile in :47, the fastest of 149 at the distance) for trainer Kenny McPeek and G3 UAE Oaks heroine Mimi Kakushi (City of Light) (a half-mile in 50.40) for trainer Salem bin Ghadayer.
