Disarm Splashes Home First in Matt Winn

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Disarm (c, 3, Gun Runner–Easy Tap, by Tapit) stormed past Verifying (Justify) in the final strides to win the relocated GIII Matt Winn S. at Ellis Park Sunday. Last seen finishing fourth in the GI Kentucky Derby, Disarm was sent off the even-money favorite in the race originally scheduled to be run at Churchill Downs. He was always within striking distance settled in third as Bo Cruz (Creative Cause) took the field through fractions of :24.46 and :48.73 over the sloppy going while tracked all the way by Verifying. Disarm lost ground on the far turn and was tipped out three wide at the top of the lane as Verifying forged to the lead with a furlong to run. Disarm found his best stride late, gliding past Verifying to win by a half-length. The final time for the nine furlongs was 1:49.59.

Disarm was second in the GII Louisiana Derby in March and earned his spot in the Kentucky Derby with a third-place effort in the Apr. 15 GIII Lexington S.

Upstart’s Prerequisite Wires the Wonder Again

First Row Partners and Team Hanley's Prerequisite went wire-to-wire to take the rescheduled GII Wonder Again S. in just her third career start at Belmont Park Sunday. Sent off at 7-1, the bay filly rushed up to take the lead into the first turn and she was tracked by Spansive (Karakontie {Jpn}) through fractions of :23.67 and :47.94 in a strung-out field down the backstretch. She scampered away into the lane and was clear in upper stretch, but was all out to hold off the late-closing Be Your Best.

“I hustled her out of the gate to get a good position and I found myself on the lead,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “She was traveling well from there. She got really brave. Every time a horse came to her, she would dig in. It's a good sign that more distance will be fine.”

Fifth behind Spansive going one mile on debut over the Gulfstream lawn Apr. 1, Prerequisite graduated over the Wonder Again's course and nine-furlong distance May 7.

“I was really impressed with her maiden win here,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “She's turning into a really nice filly and I appreciate the partners' patience. She wasn't able to make it there at two, and they did the right thing by letting us take our time with her and she's turned into quite a nice horse.”

The top three finishers of the Wonder Again received an automatic invitation to the July 8 GI Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational. The 1 1/4-mile turf test is the opening leg in the Fasig-Tipton Fillies Turf Triple, a series which also includes the Aug. 4 GIII Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational at Saratoga and the 11-furlong GIII Fasig-Tipton Jockey Club Oaks Invitational to be held during the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.

Prerequisite is the fourth graded winner for Upstart.

The unraced Etsu, a full-sister to multiple stakes-winner Homeland Security, has a 2-year-old colt by Summer Front who sold for $130,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton July sale. The mare produced a colt by Complexity last year and a colt by Upstart this year. Etsu's dam, Forever Beautiful is a half-sister to champion Farda Amiga (Broad Brush). She produced a colt by Runhappy last year and a filly by Street Boss this year.

Steve Asmussen ‘Sweeps’ 2-Year-Old Stakes With Tremont Win

Steve Asmussen made it a 'sweep' for the 2-year-old stakes wins at Belmont Sunday with a dominating performance by Gold Sweep to not only break his maiden but stamp himself a contender for upcoming summer races. Despite missing by a just a neck when unveiled at Churchill Downs May 18, the son of Speightstown was running late and still earned a 75 Beyer Speed Figure for his losing effort. Bet down to 4-5 breaking from an outside gate, Gold Sweep came away in good order and raced widest of the three top contenders into the far turn with Vitement (Mizzen Mast) and Ship Cadet to his inside. Up onto even terms with that pair as they swung off the bend, the chestnut surged forward to take command into the final eighth and drew off impressively to the wire to win by nearly double digits.

“At the quarter-pole he was beautiful, and at the three-sixteenths, he switched leads and exploded,” described winning jockey Jose Ortiz. “I showed him the whip a little just to ask him to get away and from that point on I just told him to finish the race. I didn't encourage him a whole lot and he did it pretty easy. For a 2-year-old in his second race and a maiden, I think he's going to be pretty nice.”

A $285,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling, Gold Sweep is his dam's fourth winner from as many to make the races. Second dam Ginger Brew, Canada's champion 3-year-old filly from 2008, also produced GII Demoiselle S. runner up Jamyson 'n Ginger (Bernardini) and is herself a half-sister to MGSW/MGISP Bourbon Bay (Sligo Bay {Ire}). Team Arcangelo Enjoying Belmont Victory

The team around Arcangelo (Arrogate) was still basking in the glory of his GI Belmont S. victory Sunday morning, even as trainer Jena Antonucci admitted no future plans had been mapped out for the gray colt who was taking a power nap nearby.

“There is zero idea,” Antonucci said of a potential next start for Arcangelo. “We know what the calendar is and what's where, so we'll let him come out of this and tell us. [The Aug. 26 GI Travers] is on our radar, but the stakes schedule is there and if it's seven weeks until we run or 11 weeks until we run, we'll just back into it.”

Antonucci, who won her first Grade I and became the first woman to train a winner of a Triple Crown event, said she is still processing the scale of the accomplishment 12 hours later.

“Everything is still a little bit numb on some levels and I'm just trying to sort everything out,” Antonucci said. “I'm just grateful and appreciative of what he did for us yesterday and it's pretty cool.”

Arcangelo was a little more subdued than his trainer Sunday morning.

“He's taking a nap and that's normal for him,” said Antonucci. “He's a hard sleeper.”

The Travers is the likely summer target for Belmont runner-up Forte (Violence), as well as stablemate Tapit Trice (Tapit), who was third on Saturday. Trainer Todd Pletcher said the July 22 GI Haskell S. or July 29 GII Jim Dandy S. would be considered as prep races for both sophomores.

“I think both races would be possible with both horses targeting the Travers, just deciding what we're going to do leading up to the Travers,” Pletcher said. “We'll just give it a couple weeks, see how they come out of it, how they're training and go from there.”
