Delaware Park Casino & Racing, the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, the Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Benefit Fund and the Delaware Park Jockeys Association teamed up Saturday to donate $20,000 to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.
The check was presented after the tenth race at Delaware Park Saturday. Over the course of the live racing season, each jockey donates a dollar from each mount fee and Delaware Park Casino & Racing, the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and the Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Benefit Fund each match the dollar. The total is then donated to the PDJF at the end of the season.
“Delaware Park has been fortunate to have an exceptional jockey colony for years, not only as riders, but as leaders,” said Ed Stegemeier, the Chairman of the Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Fund Board and Secretary of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission. “We could not be happier today to come together for this presentation. I am particularly honored with the method of having all the groups coming together to make this important contribution possible.”
Japanese horses flexed their muscles at the Saudi Cup meeting in February and again in Dubai the following month and a quartet of gallopers that made the short trip over for Sunday's Korea Cup (1800m) and Korea Sprint (1200m)–each carrying international Group 3 status–made their presence felt yet again in front of a packed house at Seoul Racecourse.
Japan took the first three runnings of the Cup in which they were represented from 2016-2018 and finished third with favored Sekifu (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) last year as Winner's Man (Kor) (Musket Man) led home a local 1-2 over Raon the Fighter (Kor) (Bayern) following a two-year, COVID-enforced postponement of the features. Crown Pride (Jpn) (Reach the Crown {Jpn}), last year's G2 UAE Derby hero and GI Kentucky Derby participant, was joined on the trip over by Gloria Mundi (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), less heralded, but six-from-eight on dirt, including a Group 3 when last seen in May.
With Yuga Kawada in for the afternoon, Crown Pride was bet into $1.30 (3-10) favoritism and made light work of it, taking over at the midway stage, turning back a mild bid from Gloria Mundi nearing the straight and careering away under a hold to take it by 10 lengths over his compatriot. Winner's Man ran on for third, while Hong Kong raider Apache Star (Aus) (War Chant) faded into ninth after racing prominently early.

Koji Maeda's Remake (Jpn) (Lani) was third in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint and a troubled fifth in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen earlier in the year and prepped for the Korea Sprint with a facile success in listed company at Morioka last month. Also favoured at 30 cents on the dollar, the homebred sat a midfield trip for Kawada, went for an inside run into the stretch and raced past pacesetting Beolmaui Star (Kor) (To Honor and Serve) to score by four easy lengths in track-record time. The well-traveled Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), a winner at group level in Dubai in 2022 and in Saudi Arabia this term, ran on for third ahead of Hong Kong's Duke Wai (NZ) (Per Incanto), who rallied from well back for fourth. Defending champ Eoma Eoma (Algorithms) was fifth.
Foreign targets in the immediate future for the winners could include Breeders' Cup appearances, though Crown Pride could be pointed for the valuable JBC Classic in November or December's G1 Champions Cup, in which he was narrowly defeated last season. Remake is also a candidate for the JBC Sprint and/or the G3 Capella S., which marked his first win at stakes level in 2022.

Hosted by Fasig-Tipton, the 38th Annual Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) handed out its National Awards across two days of ceremonies, the organization said in a release late Saturday.
A luncheon for the winners was held on Friday, Sept. 8 at WinStar Farm, honoring State and Canadian Breeders of the Year for 2022.
Godolphin was announced as the winner of the 2022 National Owner of the Year and 2022 National Breeder of the Year. Finalists for both categories were also honored Saturday night.
National Owner of the Year finalists included: Peter M. Brant, Hronis Racing LLC, Klaravich Stables LLC, and Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC. National Breeder of the Year finalists included: Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC and Summer Wind Equine.
Elizabeth M. Merryman won the 2022 National Small Breeder of the Year Award. Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy), owned by Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Farm, has been named National Broodmare of the Year. The Cot Campbell Partnership of the Year was presented to the owners of Flightline, which included Hronis Racing LLC, Siena Farm LLC, Summer Wind Equine LLC, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing LLC. Michael Blowen was honored with the J. David Richardson Industry Service Award.
Invaluable was honored as Claiming Crown Horse of the Year, presented by the National HBPA. The Rood & Riddle Sport Horse of the Year went to Satins Angel (Queen Satin). The Robert N. Clay Award, presented by Equine Land Conservation Resource, was awarded to Greg Goodman, which recognizes a member of the Thoroughbred community who has made an outstanding contribution to preserving land for equine use.
“Congratulations to all of the winners of the TOBA national and state awards,” said Dan Metzger, president of TOBA. “We were honored to recognize the outstanding achievements of all of tonight's winners and finalists, including the amazing success of Godolphin as both National Owner and Breeder of the Year.”

Some eleven years after her multiple champion dam Beholder (Henny Hughes) was just nosed out of a victory, 'TDN Rising Star'Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) did her momma proud with a thoroughly dominating performance in the GI FanDuel Racing Del Mar Debutante on closing weekend at the seaside oval.
It was an effort that even exceeded the already lofty expectations of her Hall of Fame connections.
“She's been doing things in her training that 2-year-olds aren't supposed to do,” said her jockey Mile Smith. “She's really special. She's like her mother. You don't see that usually. Those great mares they normally don't have great foals. But this one might be. I just held on today. I didn't want to fall off. She was doing it all herself. What can I say. She's very special.”
Added trainer Richard Mandella: “I expected her to run good but that was a little beyond. Watching it, he [Smith] had so much horse he didn't want to restrict her. He just had her do what she wanted to do. She's very quick, so I thought he would put her right there [lay second and up close] and we both agreed to that, just see what everybody else does.”
Named in honor of the late B. Wayne Hughes's daughter, Tamara was the 31-10 second choice when debuting against the once-raced and well-regarded Hope Road (Quality Road–Marley's Freedom) Aug. 19, but overcame a stumbling start to graduate by a professional 2 1/4 lengths. The Debutante was the next logical spot, but only three weeks away, meaning there could be no hiccups if she was going to make the race. Tamara was back on the worktab Aug. 30, going three-eighths of a mile in a smart :36 2/5 (2/6) and she blew out three furlongs in :34 4/5 (1/18) Sept. 4, four ticks faster than stablemate and fellow 'Rising Star' Boltage (Bolt d'Oro), who goes in Sunday's GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf.
The 13-10 favorite was bumped soundly to her outside by 143-1 Motet (Mo Town), but immediately recovered from that to sit just off the early pace set by Cal-bred Pushiness (Kantharos). Knowing precisely what he had underneath him, Smith allowed Tamara to stride into the lead fully three furlongs from home, and the race was over from there for all intents and purposes. Well clear entering the stretch, Tamara lengthened her stride beautifully while scarcely asked for an effort and glided under the wire a comprehensive winner. Laurent (Practical Joke) stayed on into second ahead of Gate to Paradise (Arrogate) in third, neither in the same league as Tamara.
Pedigree Notes:
Tamara is the fourth foal out of Beholder and she is the year-younger half-sister to Teena Ella (War Front), who won the GIII Senorita S. in May. Beholder's yearling colt by Curlin topped last month's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale when selling for $4 million to Amr Zedan.
Tamara's deeper female family needs little introduction. Beholder, a $180,000 purchase by Spendthrift at Keeneland September in 2011, was bred by Clarkland Farm, who purchased dam Leslie's Lady for $100,000 in foal to Orientate at the 2006 Keeneland November Sale. Just over a year later, Into Mischief made that decision look good when taking out the GI CashCall Futurity for Hughes and Richard Mandella. Into Mischief has since gone on to become one of the most successful sires in the world, with 134 black-type winners to date.
By the time Leslie's Lady's Scat Daddy colt sold to Coolmore for a sales-topping price of $3 million at Keeneland September in 2016, Beholder had won 10 Grade Is and three Eclipse Awards before adding to both totals when going out a winner in a memorable renewal of the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Mendelssohn became a Breeders' Cup champion in his own right in the 2018 GI Juvenile Turf–at Del Mar–and is also off to a promising start at stud. Leslie's Lady is also the dam of Clarkland's 'TDN Rising Star' Marr Time (Not This Time).
Barren to Gun Runner for 2023, Beholder was bred back to Spendthrift's Jackie's Warrior this year.
