Daughter of Omaha Beach Earns Diploma at Del Mar

SANDY BOTTOM (f, 2, Omaha Beach–Starlit Daydream, by Can the Man) went off the 3-1 second choice following a string of sharp morning moves, including the latest a bullet :46.80 (1/92) drill at Del Mar Sept. 3. Losing a step or two after bumping at the start, the filly was soon hustled to the front, carving out a :21.92 opening quarter. Stilling running strong turning for home, Sandy Bottom had enough left in reserve to hold off Blissterinthesun (Mitole) by a half length at the wire. Third-place finisher Ur In Trouble (Maximus Mischief) rounded out the trifecta for Spendthrift's sire roster. Sandy Bottom is the first foal produced by Starlit Daydream, who saw her career curtailed by injury after making only two starts for trainer Todd Pletcher and Spendthrift Farm and the Empire Racing Club. Mendelssohn Filly on Top at Kentucky Downs

Austere, never far from the lead, powered home to an easy three-length victory in the Global Tote Juvenile Fillies S. at Kentucky Downs Sunday. The dark bay filly settled in third and was within striking distance racing up the hill. Waiting for racing room nearing the stretch, she tipped out three wide at the top of the lane and reeled in pacesetting Bella Haze with a furlong to run before drawing clear to the wire. Bella Haze held on to second as Latte Lizzie and Kodiac Wintergreen (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) closed in tandem.

“It was not a surprise at all,” winning trainer Brendan Walsh said of Austere's effort. “She'd been working great. We think she has lots of talent. It was great to go there and win. It looks like she's going to a nice filly going forward.”

Austere was cutting back to a mile after breaking her maiden going 1 1/16 miles over the Ellis Park lawn in her Aug. 13 debut.

Asked if a tilt at the GI Breeders' Cup Juv Fillies Turf would be next for Austere, Walsh said, “You'd have to after today. She's two for two now. So we'll see how she comes out of it and go from there. But she's done nothing wrong so far.”

Aspenite went into the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile S. a maiden and came out a stakes winner. The colt, a $375,000 Keeneland September purchase for Winchell Thoroughbreds, broke with running on his mind and went straight to the front, but had company through the :22.59 first quarter. He got a little breather from the crowd prior to setting the :45.25 half, all the while holding firm to his rail spot. Kicking clear in the lane, Aspenite swapped to his wrong lead for much of the stretch but wasn't for catching and finished 3 1/4 lengths clear of Tough Little Nut, who had closed from several lengths back.

Second just 10 days ago by a half-length when caught late going six furlongs over this course, Aspenite's only other previous start resulted in a fourth in an off-the-turf maiden Aug. 5 at Saratoga.

“He was nominated [to the stakes] because of the possibility [of running back after the earlier Kentucky Downs start],” explained winning trainer Steve Asmussen. “He's a horse with a nice level of ability. Not exactly surprised he got a little lost [when he had a clear lead] the first time here. He sees everything. It's just kind of how he is. But he benefitted from the experience and cashed in on a very good day.”

Bred by Glen Hill Farm in Kentucky, Aspenite is out of a half-sister to MGSW & MGISP Keertana (Johar), MGSW & GISP Snow Top Mountain (Najran), and GSW Diversy Harbor (Curlin). Aspening has a yearling colt by Medaglia d'Oro, who is entered Wednesday as hip 437 in the Keeneland September sale, and an Apr. 3 colt by War of Will. She was bred back to War Front.
