Velocitor Upsets King’s Plate Winner Paramount Prince To Capture Prince Of Wales

Over a track surface turned sloppy by steady afternoon rain at Fort Erie, Velocitor (Mor Spirit) finally got the better of rival Paramount Prince (Society's Chairman) to take the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown in the Prince of Wales S.

Fourth to the King's Plate S. winner in each of his last two starts, the dark bay gelding was able to turn the tables while drawn two gates to the outside of the 5/2 favorite. Outsprinted to the lead by Paramount Prince, Velocitor was able to tuck into a cozy spot just behind the pacesetter and enjoyed a ground-saving trip through a quick :22.80 opening quarter. Joined outside by Ottawa (Violence) up the backstretch, the 7-1 shot threaded between horses to begin his bid into the far turn. Paramount Prince, no doubt growing leg weary as the half went in :45.99, was game along the rail and top two turned for home together. Head and head into the final furlong, it was Velocitor who had something left to just edge by his rival close to home. Kaukokaipuu (Mr Speaker) had plenty of run left despite hanging on his left lead and got up in time to nail Paramount Prince on the line for the exacta slot.

Pedigree Note:

Polar Plunge, herself a multiple stakes winning mare, is a full-sister to fellow MSW Wind Chill Factor. She is also a half to GIII Whimsical S. winner Shakopee Town (Jersey Town). Velocitor hails from the first crop of Mor Spirit (by Eskendereya) and became his sire's first stakes winner last fall with a victory in Woodbine's restricted Coronation Futurity. His dam produced an unraced 2-year-old full-sister and reported a colt by Rock Your World this spring before returning to that Spendthrift stallion for 2024.

Uncle Mo Half to Shedaresthedevil Brings $2.5M from John Stewart

An Uncle Mo half-sister to MGISW Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) crossed the seven-figure threshold Tuesday at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, fetching $2.5 million from Gavin O'Connor on behalf of John Stewart. The bay filly, consigned by Denali Stud, agent for WinStar Farm Bred & Raised, was bred by WinStar in Kentucky. The Apr. 4 filly joined a burgeoning list of top sellers by Coolmore America sire Uncle Mo, who had five of the top 11-priced yearlings Monday. Hip 337 is out of Starship Warpspeed (Congrats), who produced GSP Mojovation (Quality Road) in addition to GI Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil. Buyer Stewart also made a splash at the sale Monday, where his purchases included a $1-million Into Mischief full-brother to MGISW and sire Practical Joke.

Taylor Selected as KTFMC’s Farm Manager of the Year

Frank Taylor of Taylor Made Farm has been selected as the 2023 Ted Bates Farm Manager of the Year, The Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers' Club (KTFMC) announced on Tuesday. His father, Joe Taylor, was honored with the award in 1976.

Taylor has served in many roles at Taylor Made Farm, including General Farm Manager, Vice President of Boarding, and Vice President of Sales. He became a partner in the organization in 1982.

“I am so grateful that the KTFMC has honored my father with such a prestigious award,” Katie Taylor Whalen, Taylor's daughter and partner in Taylor Made Sales Agency, said. “I am so blessed to have grown up with such a strong and driven mentor. My Dad has taught me and countless others to dream big, work hard, and trust in God. I have seen him work tirelessly with my uncles to grow the Taylor Made brand and witnessed his dedication to his family, friends, clients, mentees, and the horses under his care. My Dad has a servant's heart and is willing to accept and help people from all walks of life. Whether you are a billionaire or have lost it all in the grips of addiction, his willingness to accept and help is unwavering. I would not be the person I am today without my father.”

The Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club will be hosting its annual Dinner Dance to honor Frank Taylor at the Carrick House in Lexington on Friday, Dec. 1. A silent auction will be held with all proceeds benefitting Stable Recovery, LLC. Tickets and sponsorships for the event will be available for purchase through KTFMC's website later this month.

TCA Awarded More Than $821,000 in Grants in 2023

Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) in 2023 awarded grants totaling more than $821,000, the organization announced on Tuesday.

A total of 75 organizations were approved for grants, which included 45 aftercare organizations, 20 backstretch and farm worker programs, six equine-assisted therapy organizations, three Thoroughbred incentive programs, and one research organization.

TCA's 2023 grants to aftercare organizations were bolstered by support from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's Race to Give online fundraising campaign, which last year helped raise more than $35,000 for approved organizations.

“Thanks to our generous donors, we are thrilled to be able to award grants to 75 organizations working tirelessly on behalf of Thoroughbreds and backstretch and farm workers,” Erin Halliwell, executive director of TCA, said. “We are so proud of the impact our grantees make and we are pleased to support their work.”

Grant recipients can be found on the TCA website. Grant applications for the 2024 grant cycle will be available in mid-January.
