Repole: `It’s Time Now That the Owners Take Back This Game’

In an interview with Nick Luck on Sunday's Spinster broadcast on NBC, Mike Repole called for the creation of a national owners' association that would “take back this game,” from the entities that now control it.

Repole indicated that he had started discussions with other interested owners and trainers, and expressed his discontent with the current state of the sport and how it is run, stressing that every other major sport is controlled at the ownership level.

“The frustration level…” he said. “I mean, this year, even though our success has been amazing, there isn't anything in this sport that is good right now. We need to make this sport better, so I want to start an association with the biggest owners and the biggest trainers. I think it's our responsibility. People say, `whose fault is it? Why is racing this bad?' I blame myself. I blame the owners. In other sports, like the NFL or the NBA, the owners are very involved. They run the sport. and here, we let everyone else run it for us, so I think owners and trainers taking care of the horses, the jockeys, the fans, the bettors, the tracks, working with the tracks, working with the other groups–it's time now that the owners take back this game.”

Luck pointed out that Repole had spent millions on yearlings at the Keeneland September sale just a few weeks prior.

“You just said there's nothing good about this sport, but a couple of weeks ago, just down the hill, you spent $14 million,” Luck said.

“Because I'm a big idiot, just like every owner in this game,” said Repole. “We take this. We take this from Churchill. We take this from other tracks. We take this from other associations. It can't happen any more.”

Last week, in a TDN survey about the Kentucky purse, Is The Derby Purse Fair? Repole expressed a strong opinion that the $3 million Derby purse, largely funded by nomination, entry and starting fees, was not fair.

“It's beyond embarrassing,” he said. “But not only do we put up a third of the purse with fees, but the way the owners get treated is an embarrassment. And the more I reflect, the more I'm starting to really realize that the blame of this lies with the owners and the trainers. As long as we keep letting tracks make the rules…and be ruled by the ineffective associations that represent owners, trainers, and jockeys in the sport without really having done them justice, the more we have to look ourselves in the mirror.”

He expressed a similar sentiment to Luck on the telecast.

“If we want to move forward, the only way is that the owners take over the control,” he said.” I spoke to a lot of owners. I spoke to a lot of trainers. We're going to work with the tracks, we're going to work with the other associations, we're going to work with HISA. We're going to work with horse rescue. We're going to work with vets. We're going to work with track surfaces. We're the ones that are putting money in this game. I spent $14 million dollars in this game (at Keeneland September) because I want (daughter) Gioia to be in it for a long, long time, and I care about this sport.”

Watch the interview here.

Monday afternoon, Repole added some details in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The post, in its entirety, reads:

“It's time!!!!! Racing needs change NOW. We need a NEW association led by the owners and trainers of this game that we all love and are passionate about. We need to turn selfish into SELFLESS and each do our part for the future of this great sport that is in poor health. The goal of this association will be to make all facets of racing better. We need to make it better and safer for horses, fans, gamblers, jockeys, trainers, owners, breeders, backstretch, tracks, etc, etc. This association will not just be focused on the top 10%, the goal is to make positive change for EVERYONE involved in the game. This seismic change doesn't happen overnight but it has to start now if it is ever going to happen. The plan is to unite and work together with the tracks, HISA, other racing associations, and the sales companies. We all want a better sport and it's about time we unite and leave the competition inside the racetrack not outside. Non cooperative tracks remember the owners and trainers control the entry box. I'm asking all owners and all trainers to help lead this mission!!!!! I'm asking you all to stop talking and let's unite for progress. Walk the talk!!!!! Here's a sneak peak into some of the focus items we will address: Working with HISA to improve horse safety with an advisory committee of the most experienced Thoroughbred Vets with the #1 goal to protect these amazing & loving equine athletes. Working with tracks on having three surfaces if possible, turf, dirt and synthetic. If not possible push for a synthetic training track. Stand up and back 99% of the trainers who devote their lives and work extremely hard. There are cheaters, crooks, in every industry and facet of life, they make up a small percentage. Significantly increase the purses for older horses. Having it make sense for owners and trainers to bring back these older horses. Long term this will lead to breeding older and more durable horses that will strengthen the breed. Have every consignment owner, bloodstock agent, jockey agent, veterinarian, etc. licensed with not only rules and regulations but fines, suspensions and penalties for everyone involved. Fix two year old sales. Horses will be tested when entered, weeks prior to the breeze and tested post breeze. We will also ban the stupidity of a 1 furlong 9.3 breeze. I would suggest they work go 3f or just gallop only before the auction. Promote ownership through reputable racing syndicates to get more owners in the game and at the same time educate them on horse ownership. Work with both Gen Z & Millennials with national programs focusing on the future of racing that includes future trainers, fans, grooms, gamblers, owners, media, etc. We need the next generation involved if racing has a future. Educate, upgrade and innovate the gambling of this sport. Be creative, let's think out of the box. Openly share your thoughts, comments and ideas with the industry and me. Do not hide or be afraid to speak up and share your true opinion to make the game better. If you get fired I will hire you for the new association!!!!! (Unless your name is Joe Drape) Are you willing to unite for progress??? #uniteforprogress LFG!!!!!”

Flameaway’s Dreamfyre Sweats Out Inquiry to Win Surfer Girl

The undefeated Dreamfyre (f, 2, Flameaway–Appreciating, by Sky Mesa), both stretching out and trying turf for the first time, went straight to the front in Sunday's GIII Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita. Sent at 9-5, she covered the first quarter in :23.55 and half in :48.59 with her ears flicking back and forth as Kentucky Downs maiden winner and Untapable S. third Buttercream Babe (Twirling Candy) tested her from the outside while under a hard hold. Del Mar maiden winner Soho (City of Light) made a huge, eye-catching move on the turn but couldn't sustain her rally as the three lined up across the track coming into the lane. Dreamfyre wasn't done and neither was Buttercream Babe. They left Soho behind and battled nip and tuck to the wire with Dreamfyre holding on by a neck, but a lengthy stewards' inquiry and rider's claim of foul against the winner for making contact ensued. In the end, there was no change to the order of finish. Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S. winner and $625,000 Keeneland September purchase Flattery (Flatter), who raced in third for the first half, lost position, and came on again, finished third. Final time for the mile was 1.37.11.

“There was a little bit of contact, but I always stayed in my lane,” said winning rider Hector Barrios. “The other horse came very close on my outside, and I think that was all that happened. They were just coming too close together. I didn't think that interfered with the result.”

Dreamfyre was a $140,000 OBS April purchase by Danny Eplin after she worked a furlong in 9 4/5. Breaking her maiden on debut in Pleasanton's Everett Nevin S. in July, she shipped to SoCal and promptly bagged the GIII Sorrento S. at Del Mar in August over the dirt. She is now three-for-three, a multiple graded stakes winner, and a graded winner on both dirt and turf.

Winning Northern California trainer O.J. Jauregui said following the win, “She ran big and I'm glad she did. She should get a lot out of this and maybe after this race she could go a little further. That was the question, the distance and the turf. The sire was a turf horse so I knew we had a shot. If she looks great, we will go and give Breeders' Cup [Juvenile Fillies Turf] a shot.”

Pedigree Notes:

Top five U.S. freshman sire Flameaway is the sire of Dreamfyre and is one of only two U.S. freshmen of 2023 with a graded stakes winner to date. The Darby Dan sire has two black-type winners in this initial crop and 14 individual winners. Both his stakes winners and a number of his winners are from A.P. Indy-line mares. Dreamfyre is out of a Sky Mesa mare. Sky Mesa, a veteran stallion who stands at Three Chimneys, has 36 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Appreciating, third in the 2013 GII Natalma S., also had the 2020 GI Starlet S. third Nasreddine (Nyquist). Her yearling filly is a full-sister to Dreamfyre and brought $375,000 from Colts Neck Stable at Keeneland September. The mare's 2023 colt by Gun Runner was born June 7. Appreciating is a half to the dam of 2016 GI Longines Just a Game S. winner Celestine (Scat Daddy); Celestine's sire, Scat Daddy, is also Flameaway's sire.

Oscar Performance Colt Stays Perfect in Zuma Beach

Amerman homebred Endlessly (Oscar Performance) upped his perfect record to three-for-three as he made 4-5 odds look like a gift in Sunday's GIII Zuma Beach S. at Santa Anita. The bay donned cap and gown over a mile at Del Mar July 30, and returned over the same course and distance Sept. 10 to annex the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. by another daylight margin. Getting a spin around the same trip as the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Nov. 3 this time, Endlessly settled into a midpack spot as his stablemates Ngannou (Mendelssohn) and Formidable Man (City of Light) sat first and second through a half in :46.27. The favorite began to creep closer approaching the quarter pole with Florida invader Grand Mo the First (Uncle Mo) revving up to his outside, made his move up the fence as that foe swung wide and then tipped one off the rail to overtake Ngannou while bumping with the tiring Formidable Man. Once able to fully level out, he asserted his superiority and ran up the score. Ngannou held second from Grand Mo the First.

“I had a really nice trip,” said winning rider Juan Hernandez. “My horse broke sharp today and he always puts himself in a good spot. I was tracking the pace, there were a couple of horses in front of me and I was saving ground the first turn. Around the 3/8 when I was ready to start making my move I was a little surprised because he is the kind of horse when you ask him he picks it up right away, but today it took him a couple of jumps to figure out that he had to start making his move. I wanted to go outside, but then I saw the rail open for me and saw the opportunity to come through and make up more ground, so I decided to come between horses. My horse is really professional–he came through the horses really well and after that he just passed everybody like the last couple of races. He's improving with every race.”

Pedigree Notes:

Endlessly is one of three graded winners and five stakes winners for his young sire. He is one of 80 worldwide stakes winners (20 group or graded) out of Langfuhr mares. Out of French import and SoCal SW/GSP Society Dream, dam Dream Fuhrever is a half to the dam of the Amermans' GISW Coffee Clique (Medaglia d'Oro) and MGSW Admission Office (Point of Entry). Another half-sister is responsible for this year's Hawthorne Derby winner Act a Fool (Oscar Performance). Dream Fuhrever produced a full-brother to Endlessly in March and was bred back to Oscar Performance for the fifth-straight year.

Pharoah Filly Cruises in Rained-Off Matron

Jody's Pride, a 10 1/2-length debut winner in an off-turf event upstate Aug. 9, enjoyed the same surface switch here and the result was similar. Off towards the back of the pack, the dark bay quickly picked off rivals down the backside and uncorked a three-deep move around the bend to take command under her own power before a half posted in :45.93. She found no challengers from there on in, and cruised under the line a dominant victoress from last-out New York-bred stakes fourth finisher Tricky Temper. A Primera Vista, second in the Minnesota-bred Northern Lights Debutante S. at Canterbury last out, was third.

“I broke a step slow and I asked her to get herself into the race from there,” said winning pilot Flavien Prat. “Once I hit the turn, she just swapped leads and naturally on her own took me there. I didn't want to take anything away that came easy.”

Trainer Jorge Abreu said, “The main thing I like about her is that she relaxed a little bit today. That was my worry. When she ran the first time [going] 5 1/2 [furlongs], you know how they can be mentally, especially the fillies–they want to be a little keyed up and stuff like that. The first day we galloped her after the race, she looked like she was going to go the other way, but then she's got a pretty good, level head, that filly.”

As far as what could be next, the conditioner said, “My goal is to make it to the Breeders' Cup with her. I think she's that kind of horse. [Which race] is something we have to sit down and see. We'll see how she comes out in the morning and take it from there. I would rather go a mile. A mile on the turf. My first preference is turf.”

Pedigree Notes:

Jody's Pride is her sire's 35th Northern Hemisphere black-type winner, and would be his 19th grade/group winner should the original grade of this race be reinstated after review. She is the 27th Northern Hemisphere stakes winner out of a Scat Daddy mare. Mackinnon, the multiple stakes-winning juvenile who was third in the 2021 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, is bred on this same American Pharoah–Scat Daddy cross.

Steve Weston's Parkland Thoroughbreds and trainer Jorge Abreu also campaigned the winner's dam, who was a $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and won both of her starts in turf sprints against fellow New York-breds. Jody's Song's prior foal Empathy (Uncle Mo) broke her maiden going seven furlongs on the Belmont grass in July. A half-brother to MGSW/GISP Make Mischief (Into Mischief), Jody's Song has yearling and foal full-brothers to Jody's Pride. She most recently visited Epicenter.
