Tiz the Law Tunes Up for Belmont

Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law (Constitution) breezed a half-mile Sunday at Belmont Park in his final work ahead of next Saturday’s GI Belmont S. Jockey Manny Franco was aboard the bay colt who, working solo from the half-mile pole, breezed through splits of :26.50, :50.42 (41/46) and out in 1:03.12.

“He went well. We weren’t looking for anything special today,” said trainer Barclay Tagg, who ponied Tiz the Law to and from the work.

Franco added, “When Barclay turned me loose, he got strong a little bit, but when we passed the seven-eighths to the three-quarters, he settled down a little bit and he did it nice. He did it really well and really easy, so I’m very happy with the work.”

Tiz the Law captured the GI Curlin Florida Derby in his most recent start Mar. 28. In his first work after shipping up from Florida, he went five furlongs in 1:00.53 (5/9) last Monday.

Saturday’s Belmont S. will be run at nine furlongs this year, the same distance as the Florida Derby.

“He makes my work a lot easier,” said Franco. “He’s a versatile horse. He can be there on the pace or sit off, so I can do whatever I want. He’s run here before and won and I think he likes the track. So, that’s to our advantage.”

Pam and Martin Wygod’s Modernist (Uncle Mo) remains possible for the Belmont following his five-furlong work in :59.20 (1 /16) Sunday at Belmont Park.

With regular rider Junior Alvarado in the irons, Modernist worked in tandem with two-time graded stakes winner Tacitus (Tapit), who was piloted by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, recording a :24.40 opening quarter and galloped out in 1:11.40 over a main track rated “fast.”

“He broke off in a nice rhythm and turning for home I was one length behind Tacitus,” Alvarado said. “As soon as we turned in, we got together and galloped out. I thought the work was extremely good.”

Winner of the Feb. 15 GII Risen Star S., Modernist was most recently third in the Mar. 31 GII Louisiana Derby.

“We’re going to have an owner conversation before too long,” trainer Bill Mott said of Modernist’s potential next start. “The work looked good, nice and smooth. Modernist and Tacitus both worked together and looked great. They finished up well, galloped out nice and strong.”

In addition to the Belmont, the colt is also considered possible for the June 27 GIII Ohio Derby.

Juddmonte Farm’s Tacitus, second in last year’s Belmont, is likely to contest the July 4 GII Suburban S.

Man in the Can to Target Blue Grass

Jrita Young Thoroughbreds’ Man in the Can (Can the Man) will be aimed at the July 11 GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland following his allowance score as the 5-2 favorite at Churchill Friday (video).

“That sure was an impressive turn of foot,” trainer Ron  Moquett said of his charge’s 1 1/2-length victory in the nine-furlong event. “I wasn’t expecting him to go off as that big of a favorite, but he ran against some stiff Arky-bred competition in his last couple of starts at Oaklawn. I think the bettors saw that before the race and that’s why he ended up going off favorite. He definitely deserves a shot in the Blue Grass. There have been so many top Kentucky Derby contenders that have gone off the trail this week that it’s really anyone’s game.”

A debut winner at Remington Park last December, Man in the Can defeated fellow Arkasas-breds to win the six-furlong Rainbow S. Apr. 17 and the 1 1/16-mile Arkansas Breeders’ Champions S. May 1.

The rescheduled Blue Grass will award the top four finishers 100-40-20-10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Should Man in the Can qualify for the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby, he would become the first Arkansas-bred to run in the race since Barbizon Streak, who finished 16th in 1971.

Bruce Lunsford’s Art Collector (Bernardini) was another promising 3-year-old allowance winner at Churchill last week. The colt, an off-the-pace 2 3/4-length winner of a seven-furlong allowance in Louisville May 17, was a front-running 6 1/2-length victor going 1 1/16 miles Saturday (video).

“He’s certainly getting better at the right time,” trainer Tommy Drury said. “That is as impressive as it gets to kick clear as he did. I asked Bruce to let us enjoy this one for a couple of days and then we’d get together and talk about our next options.”

Carpe Diem Colt Breaks Through in Hong Kong

Sent off the 35-100 favorite in Sunday’s 1000-meter Chairmen’s Day Plate at Hong Kong’s Sha Tin Racecourse, Chancheng Prince (Carpe Diem) made light work of four other rivals to score by 3 1/4 convincing lengths (video). The event was restricted to so-called griffins, Southern Hemisphere 2-year-olds and Northern Hemisphere 3-year-olds that are unraced prior to their arrival in Hong Kong.

With second-leading rider Joao Moreira taking the reins for the first time, the gray colt hopped slightly at the start, then raced prominently on the stands’ rail. Sent into the lead for good about 400 meters out, he pinched a winning break and pulled clear to win with something in the locker. It was the fourth lifetime appearance for Chancheng Prince, who was cutting back to the straight five furlongs off a solid runner-up effort going three-quarters of a mile May 24.

The gray colt is the third to make the races from his dam Bliss (Flashy Bull), herself a $190,000 Keeneland September yearling and winner of half of her eight trips to the post for earnings north of $150,000. An Apr. 20 foal, Chancheng Prince is bred by Torie Gladwell’s Mystic Bloodstock and was sold to owner Raymond Kuah for $150,000 after breezing a quarter-mile in :21.1 at the 2019 OBS April Sale. He was sold by Top Line Sales, the consignment run by Gladwell and her husband Jimbo. Bliss foaled a filly by Mastery this year. The Gladwells sold a Not This Time filly for a sales-topping $1.35 million at OBS Spring this past week.

The final griffin race of the season is programmed for Sunday, July 5 back over 1200 meters.
