Rushing Fall Shatters Course Record in Jenny Wiley Repeat

Already a Grade I winner at ages two, three and four, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) made it four straight seasons at the highest level with a record-setting victory in the GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland Saturday, which she also won last season. Away in good order, the 4-5 chalk was hot on pacesetting Jolie Olimpica (Brz)’s (Drosselmeyer) tail in second with Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) to her inside through upbeat fractions of :23.42 and :46.94. Ranging up to look Jolie Olimpica in the eye turning for home, Rushing Fall engaged in a brief battle with her foe, but shut the door on her by mid-stretch and drew clear to win by 3/4 of a length. Her final time of 1:39.02 shattered the previous course record for a mile of 1:40.30 set by Quiet Resolve (Affirmed) in 2000.

“It’s a dream come true,” said owner Bob Edwards of e Five Racing. “Everyone wishes for a horse like this. I hope I get another one in my racing career like her. This is just phenomenal. We’re all sitting around watching it at the house…I’m still shaking. The adrenaline spike is still there even when you’re watching from your couch. And not a terrible day for Chad [Brown]!”

Kicking off her 2019 season with a victory in this race, Rushing Fall followed suit with a win in Belmont’s GI Just a Game S. last June and was second to her champion stablemate Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in Saratoga’s GI Diana S. Closing out last term with a fourth to another champion barnmate in Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in this venue’s GI First Lady S. in October, the bay opened this term with a wire-to-wire victory in Belmont’s GIII Beaugay S. June 3.

Pedigree Notes:

Rushing Fall’s female family has dabbled in the spotlight for many years, long before her dam, Autumnal, produced the five-time Grade I winner and 2014 SW & three-time GSP Milam (Street Sense). Autumnal’s dam, Marie J, made headlines in 1997 when she sold for $1 million as a 2-year-old in training at that year’s Barretts March sale and then was named after the “Marie” half of prominent owners Aaron and Marie Jones, who bred Autumnal. The latter was sold as a 2004 Keeneland September yearling for $550,000. Rushing Fall is the brightest light in the most recent branches of the family, although Marie J’s half-sister did produce GISW Albert the Great (Go for Gin). Autumnal has had only two foals since Rushing Fall was born in 2015, including a full-brother to the Jenny Wiley winner born this year. Rushing Fall is one of 202 black-type winners–91 graded–for dual hemisphere super sire More Than Ready.

Speech Loud and Clear in Ashland

Speech (Mr Speaker) became her young sire’s first Grade I winner and earned enough points to land her a spot in the Sept. 4 GI Kentucky Oaks with a decisive score in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland Saturday afternoon. Speedy GII Las Virgenes S. romper Venetian Harbor (Munnings) shot out to the early lead, loping through an opening quarter in :24.04 with Speech stalking from second off the fence. Envoutante (Uncle Mo) slipped up the fence inside of Speech as the half went up in :47.14, but backed out of it on the backstretch as Speech ranged up threateningly on the pacesetter’s outside. Speech overtook Venetian Harbor in early stretch and punched clear to win by three lengths. Venetian Harbor held second over Envoutante.

“I was very happy,” said winning trainer Mike McCarthy. “Obviously we had our mind set on running in the [GIII] Beaumont S. for the last five weeks or so and the last minute, we kind of called an audible and sometimes these things work out. To come back today and think we would set a track record in a race we weren’t especially pointing to says something about Speech. She trained well, she shows up every time. I call her the ultimate overachiever.”

Graduating at second asking at Los Alamitos in December, Speech was second to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Auberge (Palace) in a Feb. 1 optional claimer at Santa Anita and completed the exacta behind Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) in the GIII Santa Ysabel S. Mar. 8 in Arcadia. Coming up a neck short of dominant GI Acorn S. victress and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Gamine (Into Mischief) in an Oaklawn optional claimer May 2, the bay filled the place spot again in the GII Santa Anita Oaks last time June 6.

Pedigree Notes:

Speech is the first black-type winner for her young sire Mr Speaker. Breeder Gail Rice purchased the winner’s dam Scribbling Sarah, who was conditioned by her former sister-in-law Linda Rice, for $7,500 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. The 10-year-old mare has since produced an unnamed juvenile colt by Upstart and a 2019 colt by Unified. She was bred back to Midnight Lute, but has no reported foal for 2020.

Guarana Battles Back to Take Madison, Giving Brown 100th Career Grade I

Keeneland’s GI Madison S. was a battle between ‘TDN Rising Stars’ Guarana (Ghostzapper) and Mia Mischief (Into Mischief) from start to finish, but in the end it was Guarana who won the gutsy brawl. Favored at 1-2, Guarana went straight to the front and was hounded by Mia Mischief, who was let go at a surprising at 8-1, through early splits of :22.95 and :45.92. Mia Mischief drew even with Guarana at the top of the stretch and briefly headed her younger rival, but Guarana battled back in the final sixteenth, turning back her elder for a half-length success. It was the 100th Grade I victory for Eclipse winning-conditioner Chad Brown.

“Well during the course of the race, what happened was it unfolded sort of how I feared with Mia Mischief having the better post on the outside of us and being able to hound us a bit,” said Brown. “I thought turning for home that the post really did us in this race and I was started to get a little disappointed. But I could see at the sixteenth pole that she was finding her stride again and I think seven [furlongs] is maybe a tick far for the other filly. We were able to come back on her. She showed her heart. She showed that she’s a very special horse, which we’ve known for a long time.”

He continued, “To [get the 100th Grade I win] with one of Mr. Torrealba’s horses is really special. He’s a real fine man. Very loyal. It’s right up there near the top. It’s a whole body of work from 12 1/2 years now of training. It has to do with my team of co workers, owners, and horses both present and past. They all contributed to the 100 Grade Is. God willing if everything stays in tact, we’ll work on the next 100. But we’re going to enjoy this for now.”

Devastating the field by 14 3/4 lengths in her Keeneland unveiling last April, Guarana romped by sixth in Belmont’s GI Acorn S. last June and followed suit with a win in the nine-panel GI CCA Oaks six weeks later. Finishing second to Street Band (Istan) as the favorite in the GI Cotillion S. Sept. 21, she was subsequently shelved for the season and resurfaced at Churchill June 4 with a dominant optional claimer score in the slop June 4.

Guarana is one of 12 top-level scorers by Ghostzapper and one of 41 graded winners for the Adena stallion. She is bred on the same Ghostzapper/Distorted Humor cross as fellow Grade I winner Molly Morgan. Daughters of Distorted Humor are responsible for 45 graded stakes winners. Magical World, a daughter of GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Pleasant home (Seeking the Gold), is also responsible for stakes winner and GSP ‘TDN Rising Star’ Magic Dance (More Than Ready). Her 2018 colt by Pioneerof the Nile brought $2.1 million from e Five Racing at Keeneland September. The 10-year-old mare did not have a foal in 2019, but had a Gun Runner colt Feb. 25 of this year. Enola Gay, employing her usual come-from-behind style, got up in the final jump to collect her first black-type and graded- stakes win in Saturday’s GII Appalachian S. A first-out winner going 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs last September, the bay concluded the season with a fourth–beaten four lengths–in the Stewart Manor S. over Aqueduct’s outer turf course Nov. 10. Given a 5-1 chance in this seasonal return, the Shug McGaughey trainee was a close-up third as Evil Lyn (Wicked Strong) and Alms (City Zip) established a :23.25 quarter. Joined by Walk In Marrakesh to her outside through a half in :46.28, the Allen hombred was soon left behind as Walk In Marrakesh rushed up to join the two leaders as they hit the quarter pole. At the head of the stretch, Evil Lyn, Alms and Walk In Marrakesh were three abreast with Enola Gay tucked in about a length behind them, and while it looked like one of the top three would win the day, Enola Gay found her best stride late and closed down the center of the course to best Walk In Marrakesh by a nose on the wire. Alms rounded out the trifecta.

Campaigned by Joseph Allen, Enola Gay is out of Allen hombred Dakota Queen (War Front), herself a daughter of Group 2\Grade III-winner Moon Queen (Sadler’s Wells). A half-sister to multiple graded stakes winning turf mare Innuendo (Ire) (Caerleon), Moon Queen–a daughter of 1988 Woodbine’s GI Rothmans International heroine Infamy (Ire)–is also responsible for Grade III-scorer Beauty Parlor (Elusive Quality).
Dakota Queen produced a juvenile full-sister to the winner, now named Flying Fortress, and a yearling sister by Union Rags. The 8-year-old mare was bred back to Into Mischief.
Enola Gay is the first graded stakes winner, and the fifth stakes winner, for War Front as a broodmare sire.
