Jim Sabiston Passes Away

Canadian breeder Jim Sabiston passed away Saturday. He was 97. Sabiston operated Longview Farm near Stouffville, Ontario for more than six decades, beginning in 1956 with his first stallion Bimini Bay. Among the numerous sires he stood were Dawn Flight, Triumphant, Ground Cover, Good Old Mort and Bold Revenue. He bred stakes winners Rose and Shine, Grecian Touch, Silent Fleet, Katahaula County, Big Blunder and Bold Agent. Rose and Shine, winner of the 2011 Muskoka S. and Princess Elizabeth S., went on to produce last year’s Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old filly and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner British Idiom (Flashback).

A longtime member of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, he was awarded that organization’s Mint Julep Cup in 1996 in recognition of his dedication and lifetime contributions to the Thoroughbred industry.

A private funeral service will take place, with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.

Jackie’s Warrior Dam, Weanling Half-Brother Supplemented to Keeneland November

Both the dam of and weanling half-brother to unbeaten leading juvenile colt Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) have been supplemented to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, it was announced Sunday–one day after the Steve Asmussen pupil further solidified himself as the favorite for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a 5 1/2-length romp in Saturday’s GI Champagne S. at Belmont. Dam Unicorn Girl (A. P. Five Hundred) will be offered in foal to leading sire Into Mischief; her weanling colt is by American Pharoah. Both will be consigned by Beau Lane Bloodstock during the Book 1 session on the sale’s first day, Nov. 9.

“It was a very impressive victory for Jackie’s Warrior in the Champagne, and Unicorn Girl in foal to Into Mischief on one cover and carrying a colt will be well received at Keeneland November,” said Carlo Vaccarezza, who owns the mare and weanling with John Williams. “Also selling the weanling half-brother to Jackie’s Warrior by American Pharoah will show what she’s capable of moving forward. John and I are extremely excited for this opportunity.”

Beau Lane offered: “There is no telling what Unicorn Girl can do with a foal by Into Mischief. She is a powerhouse. She tried her heart out every time she raced. She’s a quality mare who was an overachiever, and she passes that on to her babies. They have the same attitude. She is the kind that can give you that special horse.”

A debut winner at Churchill in June, Jackie’s Warrior–a $95,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by J. Kirk and Judy Robison–annexed the GII Saratoga Special S. Aug. 7 and GI Runhappy Hopeful S. back at the Spa a month later.

“Jackie’s Warrior proved his star power with his dominating performance in the Champagne, and we look forward to seeing him at Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland is especially excited to offer his dam, Unicorn Girl, who is in foal to the popular stallion Into Mischief, and his weanling half-brother in the November Sale.”

Harvey’s Lil Goil Becomes First GISW for American Pharoah in QEII

Versatile Harvey’s Lil Goil (American Pharoah) turned the tables on Micheline (Bernardini)–who defeated her by a neck last time in the Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs–to become the first Grade I winner for Triple Crown-winning sire American Pharoah in Saturday’s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. at Keeneland. Off at 7-2 bidding to become Hall of Famer Bill Mott’s second winner in this prestigious event, the grey employed her good cruising speed to chase Sweet Melania (American Pharoah) through honest enough fractions of :23.89, :47.75 and 1:12.16. She poked a head in front midway around the turn for home, kicked clear in midstretch and held off the cavalry charge to prevail.

“She has a lot of natural speed,” said winning rider Martin Garcia. “She’s fast–you can do whatever you want. After the break, I moved outside and she was really comfortable by herself. When it was time to go, I asked and she responded.”

Mott’s assistant Kenny McCarthy added, “We were pretty confident with her. She ran a super race for us at Kentucky Downs in her last out and had trained really well in between. She’s a little superstar. She pretty much goes on any surface for us. At least in my mind, I think the turf probably is a little bit easier for her to handle.”

A six-length, second-out graduate going turf to dirt at Aqueduct in December, Harvey’s Lil Goil turned heads when making a big turn move en route to a dominant victory in Aqueduct’s Feb. 2 Busanda S. over nine panels on the dirt. She was 11th in the GIII Fantasy S. at Oaklawn behind heavy hitters Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil), Venetian Harbor (Munnings) and Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil), but bounced back to narrowly annex the GIII Regret S. on the Churchill turf going this same distance. Third behind Swiss Skydiver in the 10-panel GI Alabama S. on the Spa main track Aug. 15, she led late in the uphill Kentucky Downs stretch Sept. 10 only to be run down in the waning stages.

Harvey’s Lil Goil is from a family developed by her breeder, the late Harvey A. Clarke. Her dam, the unraced Gloria S., is a half-sister to the Clarke-bred champion I’ll Have Another (Flower Alley), best known as the winner of the 2012 GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. Clarke also bred the same family’s Golden Award (Medaglia d’Oro), a dual graded stakes winner last year. Gloria S. produced fillies by Cairo Prince the last two breeding seasons and most recently visited Twirling Candy. Harvey’s Lil Goil is one of 11 black-type winners (seven graded) for American Pharoah. She is the fourth of what figures to be many more Grade I/Group 1 winners out of Tapit mares.

Happy Saver Stays Perfect in Jockey Club Gold Cup

Lightly raced ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Happy Saver (Super Saver) squeezed inside of favorite Tacitus (Tapit) and out-finished fellow sophomore ‘Rising Star‘ Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) to stay perfect in Saturday’s GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Wertheimer homebred broke his maiden by an auspicious 5 1/2 lengths going seven furlongs on the GI Belmont S. undercard here in June, and saw out nine panels when taking a Saratoga allowance July 26. He again displayed his appreciation for a route of ground in Laurel’s Federico Tesio S. Sept. 7, and was the 2-1 second choice facing just four foes.

Away on top from his rail draw, the chestnut settled in along the fence as July’s track-and-trip GII Suburban S. winner Tacitus showed the way and Mystic Guide tracked outside of Happy Saver. Happy Saver required some energetic handling to keep pace as Mystic Guide ratcheted up the pressure on the leader past six panels in 1:13.61. Tacitus came off the fence a path while preoccupied with Mystic Guide to his outside, giving Happy Saver just enough room to make his move. Happy Saver kicked his way through by midstretch after Mystic Guide had already taken over, and lowered himself gamely from there to outstay his competition.

“We were OK with [not having the lead],” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who was celebrating his first Jockey Club Gold Cup win after Vino Rosso (Curlin) was taken down 12 months ago. “I told Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] in the paddock that usually I have a little idea of a plan, but this one was tricky to me. Everyone has the same style and I don’t think anyone really wants to be on the lead, but someone is going to inherit it, so just play it by ear.

“Watching the race, I thought he was a little uncomfortable inside there. He was in a tricky spot. Johnny [Velazquez, aboard Mystic Guide] had first run on him and was able to keep him in there. To his credit, that was a pretty game performance to come up the inside there in his fourth start and first time against older horses going a mile and a quarter. To do that after breaking his maiden on June 20th is hard to do.”

Ortiz offered: “He has a big heart, like I told Todd in the paddock. He’s a fighter. Every time he has a horse in front of him and when you ask him to go, he passes the horse and then he puts his ears up. He still had something after he went by Johnny’s horse.

“It was emotional. I wanted to win it so bad. Last year, I got DQ’d and that was for Todd, too. He’s a cool horse, a special horse. I rode him first time out and we knew he was a nice horse. Todd has always liked him.”

Pletcher added, “I was very proud of the horse and his performance. I’m happy for the connections, the Wertheimers have been loyal supporters for many years and I’m appreciative of that. It’s great to get a Grade I win for them. He’s by a Derby winner we trained, so it’s fun all the way around.”

As for whether Happy Saver would take the next logical step and contest the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the conditioner said, “First and foremost we’ll see how he bounces out of this race. It was a tough race and he’s still a lightly raced horse. That’s part of the reason we decided to come here instead of going to the [GI] Preakness [last Saturday]. We’ll enjoy this for the moment and talk to the Wertheimers and come up with a plan. I wouldn’t say we’re definite for it, but I wouldn’t rule it out either.”
