Curlin Rising Star With Another ‘Glorious’ Performance

TDN Rising Star‘ Souper Sensational (Curlin) made it two wins from as many trips to the races with a highly impressive victory in Saturday’s Glorious Song S. at Woodbine.

Favored at 3-5 to add to a facile 2 1/4-length debut success in a salty local maiden Sept. 26, the $725,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate was outfooted early, but mustered speed up the inside to lead prior to the entrance to the turn. Skipping along nicely into the final two furlongs despite some pressure to her outside, Souper Sensational pinched a winning break in upper stretch and was never in any danger. Javanica (Medaglia d’Oro) ran on well from last to complete the exacta ahead of the winner’s longshot stablemate Right To Freedom (Constitution).

“I don’t want to be smart, but she’s one of the best so far I’ve got on as a two-year-old,” said winning jockey Patrick Husbands. “All this horse has got is ‘green light.’ You could do anything with her. She’s just a 3-year-old in a 2-year-old body.”

The 70th black-type winner for her sire, Souper Sensational is out of an unraced half-sister to GISW Tiz Miz Sue (Tiznow), dam of this year’s Japanese-based G3 UAE Oaks third Serein (Uncle Mo); and Bulletin (City Zip), winner of the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Kateri, who was purchased by Sallusto & Albina, agent for Newtown Anner Stud, for $167,000 in foal to Paynter at FTKFEB in 2016, is the dam of a yearling colt by Maclean’s Music and a weanling full-sister to Souper Sensational. She was most recently covered by American Pharoah. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

THINKING (f, 2, Nyquist–Critikal Reason {SP}, by Aptitude) was rated a 4-1 chance to improve off a debut sixth to next-out GIII Matron S. victrix Royal Approval (Tiznow) at Kentucky Downs Sept. 9 and made a successful transition to the main track to graduate at second asking Saturday at Keeneland. One of the first into stride from her high draw, Thinking raced in a share of third and three wide down the backstretch before and chased outside dueling pacesetters into the turn. Ridden quietly while traveling strongly into the final quarter mile, the dark bay responded when set down and had 1 1/2 lengths on Three Tipsy Chix (Medaglia d’Oro) at the line. Willful Woman completed a 1-3 finish for Nyquist, while Wicked Bisou (Wicked Strong), the half-sister to champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) ran with credit to be fifth. Thinking, the 10th winner for her first-crop sire (by Uncle Mo), is a half -sister to Virtual Machine (Drosselmeyer), GSP, $200,755; and Bajan (Speightstown), MSW & GISP, $251,949. Performer Returns Running at Belmont

3rd-Belmont, $67,900, Alw (C), Opt. Clm ($80,000), 10-17, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:33.93, my, 1 3/4 lengths.
PERFORMER (c, 4, Speightstown–Protesting {GSP, $213,050}, by A.P. Indy) made light work of his first start since taking the GIII Discovery S. last November, galloping home as easy as you please in a one-mile Belmont allowance Saturday afternoon. Quickly into stride beneath Joel Rosario, the attractive chestnut colt raced a touch keenly from third while hugging the rail through solid opening splits. Rosario decided he could wait no longer rounding the turn and allowed the 3-10 chalk to accelerate to the inside of pacesetting Musical Heart (Maclean’s Music) and the pair hit the front with three furlongs to race. With his rider hard against him and with his ears flopping back and forth, Performer held Musical Heart at a safe distance before being allowed to run just a touch through the final half-furlong. The winning margin was a measured 1 3/4 lengths. Winner of two of his first three trips to the post racing solely for the Phippses, Performer had a new part-owner in the form of Claiborne when strolling home the 1 3/4-length winner of an 8 1/2-furlong allowance locally last Sept. 29. Trying two turns for the first time in the Discovery, Performer pressed a moderate early pace, raced to the front a furlong from home and had 3/4 of a length on Tax (Arch) at the wire. “I was excited about it, but I was a little nervous about it as the morning went on,” trained Shug McGaughey told NYRA’s Maggie Wolfendale after the race. “He’d been training well. It’s been a go-and-stop year. He was going to run in the [GI] Carter [H.] on Wood day and then he was going to run in the Carter on June 6, but we had to stop him and take care of some things. I was very, very pleased with what I saw.” After inclement weather earlier in the week forced the postponement of Performer’s final pre-race work, McGaughey breezed him a more sedate half-mile in :49 1/5 just two days prior. “It probably would have been more the first of the week and probably a little more solid, but I have done that in the past,” the Hall of Famer said when asked by Wolfendale if a work that close to a race is typical for him. “Sometimes I think it’s good for horses, kind of brush them up a little bit. When you do it, you hope they come out of it good and he did.” McGaughey said Performer could make his next start in the $250,000 GI Cigar Mile H. at Aqueduct Dec. 5. “If he comes out of [Saturday’s race] good, that’s what our plans are. Hopefully we can have a 5-year-old year with him. That wasn’t originally our plan, but when we got curtailed with the COVID stuff, that’s a good possibility.” Protesting, runner-up in the 2009 GII Demoiselle S., is also the dam of Breaking the Rules (War Front), SW & GSP, $333,127, the morning-line favorite for Sunday’s GII Knickerbocker S., and is herself a daughter of GSP On Parade (Storm Cat). The latter, a full-sister to champion Storm Flag Flying, is responsible for GSW Parading (Pulpit). Performer’s third dam is undefeated Personal Ensign (Private Account)’s daughter My Flag (Easy Goer), who counted the 1995 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies among her four top-level scores. Protesting was most recently bred to Runhappy. Lifetime Record: GSW, 6-5-0-1, $295,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

NYRA Releases Jockey Protocols for Aqueduct

NYRA released its COVID-19 protocols Saturday for jockeys riding at the Aqueduct fall meet, which runs from Nov. 6 to Dec. 6. Members of the Aqueduct jockey colony who travel to ride at any other racetrack during the fall meet will be required to provide two negative COVID-19 tests taken within a five-day window in order to return to ride at Aqueduct. Jockeys traveling out of state who have completed the required testing will then be physically isolated in the jockey quarters for three additional calendar days.

Jockeys not currently riding at NYRA who wish to join the Aqueduct jockey colony for the beginning of the Aqueduct fall meet must contact NYRA’s Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Martin Panza or Aqueduct Racing Secretary Keith Doleshel by Wednesday, Nov. 11. Newcomers to the NYRA jockey colony will be required to provide two negative COVID-19 tests taken within the five-day window preceding that jockey’s first mount at Aqueduct.

In order to mitigate risk and reduce the spread of COVID-19, Aqueduct will be closed to out-of-town jockeys not considered members of the regular NYRA jockey colony. All testing must be performed in New York state.

In addition to race day safety protocols which include standard health screening and temperature checks, the jockey quarters at Aqueduct have been substantially altered to provide maximum social distancing and reduce density. All areas accessed by jockeys during the regular course of a race day are closed to outside personnel, including credentialed media, and are cleaned and disinfected throughout the day.

Jockeys are not permitted access to the barn area at Belmont Park. In order to work a horse in the morning, the jockey must meet the horse in the paddock and may then proceed to the main track for as long as the main track remains open.

Jockey agents arriving from outside of New York must produce a negative COVID-19 test in order to gain access to the barn area at Belmont Park. Races will continue to be drawn via Zoom.

All valets must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken any time after Nov. 2 in order to access the jockey quarters on opening day, Nov. 6. Valets who choose to only saddle horses in the paddock and not enter the jockey quarters will be allowed in the Belmont Park barn area.
