Into Mischief Mare Tops Keeneland November Sunday

Able to Smile (Into Mischief) (hip 2509), a 4-year-old broodmare prospect, topped Sunday’s seventh session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale when bringing a final bid of $135,000. I’ll Need a Little Luck was the name on the ticket for the gray filly, who was consigned by Indian Creek. Out of Grade I placed Teamgeist (Arg) (Mutakddim), Able to Smile is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner House Rules (Distorted Humor), as well as to multiple Grade I placed Win the Space (Pulpit). A $385,000 Keeneland September yearling, Able to Smile won once in seven starts on the racetrack.

“Able To Smile was a beautiful broodmare prospect, she was very popular showing and we were hopeful she would be one of the top offerings on the day,” said Indian Creek’s Sarah Sutherland. “She was a standout physically and on paper and would have held her own earlier in the sale as well. We are delighted with the sale.”

Able to Smile was one of two mares to bring six figures on the day. John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa purchased the 6-year-old mare Stormy’s Song (Unbridled’s Song) (hip 2450) for $125,000. She is out of Stormy Tak (Stormy Atlantic), a daughter of multiple Grade I winner Lady Tak (Mutakddim).

The Army Mule partnership purchased Stormy’s Song for $102,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. She sold in foal to Army Mule and was followed into the sales ring Sunday by her weanling colt by that Hill ‘n’ Dale stallion, who was the session’s top-priced foal when selling for $80,000 to Castleton Stables. The weanling was bred by Elevage II and St Elias Stables and both mare and foal were consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency.

A total of 265 horses sold Sunday for $5,235,300. The session average was $19,756 and the median was of $12,000. While only 305 of the 410 catalogued head went through the sales ring Sunday, 265 sold for a buy-back rate of just 13.11%.

“The session was very good to us,” Sutherland said. “It felt similar to the second week of [Keeneland] September. I don’t think you can expect fireworks, but you can sell horses very comfortably if you are fair and realistic.”

Through seven sessions, Keeneland has sold 1,512 horses for a gross of $140,214,700. The cumulative average is $92,735 and the median is $42,000. The buy-back rate stands at 22.18%.

The November sale continues through Wednesday with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Tamarkuz Colt Dominates Bob Hope to Become Sire’s First Stakes Winner

Tina and Jerry Moss’s Red Flag became the stakes winner for his freshman sire, 2016 GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile victor Tamarkuz (Speighstown), with a romping 7 1/4-length score in the GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar Sunday. Sent off at 10-1, the chestnut colt was widest of four scrambling on the front end early, with Weston (Hit it a Bomb) down along the rail and favored Spielberg (Union Rags) and Coastal Kid (Coast Guard) all to his inside. Weston took a slim advantage after a quarter in :22.37, but the race changed in an instant when Coastal Kid, caught in tight quarters between the tiring Spielberg and the rallying Red Flag, took up sharply near the three-eighths pole. Red Flag surged to the lead with authority after a half in :45.34 and extended his advantage with every stride down the lane. Uncle Boogie (Ride On Curlin) rallied for second over Ambivalent (Constitution). Spielberg settled for fourth. After an inquiry into the incident on the turn, the stewards made no change to the order of finish.

“He broke running and he wanted to go,” said winning rider Victor Espinoza. “He seemed to be more professional today than last time. He’s still a baby and he was fooling around before. But he was good today and did all the right things. He’ll go farther, for sure. With the way he ran today, why not?”

Winning trainer John Shirreffs admitted the romping victory surprised him.

“I didn’t really expect that kind of performance,” said Shirreffs. “I was hoping to get a placing. He broke his maiden from way off the pace and he’s been doing better and better in the mornings, but he’s not a brilliant work horse. So this was a pleasant surprise. You always hope but you never know.”

Red Flag opened his career with a well-beaten fifth-place effort going 5 1/2 furlongs over the main track at Del Mar Sept. 6, but moved to the lawn to graduate in late-running style going that same distance at Santa Anita Oct. 10.

“He’s gone from 5 1/2 furlongs to seven, so it looks like he’ll be able to go longer,” Shirreffs said. “It’s special because Mr. and Mrs. Moss were here today and got to see him run.”

Pedigree Notes:

Canadian breeder Elaine Macpherson purchased Surrender, in foal to Morning Line, for $40,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale. The foal the mare was carrying was Surrender Now, who won the 2017 Landaluce S. The 11-year-old mare has a yearling colt by Tiznow, who RNA’d for $23,000 at last month’s Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale. She produced a colt by Mendelssohn this year and was bred back to Catholic Boy.

The winner’s third dam is graded stakes winner and Grade I placed Mackie, dam of graded winner Mr. Mellon (Red Ransom) and Seeking the Best (Ire) (Seeking the Gold).

Firenze Fire to Target Cigar Mile

Mr. Amore Stable’s Firenze Fire (Poseidan’s Warrior), a late-closing third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint, will make his next start in the Dec. 5 GI Cigar Mile.

“He’s back at Belmont and that’s what we’re pointing for,” trainer Kelly Breen said of the Cigar Mile.

The 5-year-old rallied from 11th to finish third under jockey Jose Lezcano in the Nov. 7 Sprint at Keeneland.

“It was a good race,” Breen said of the veteran’s most recent start.

Breen said Lezcano, aboard for Firenze Fire’s GII Vosburgh Invitational win Sept. 26 at Belmont, will retain the mount for the Cigar Mile.

Others under consideration for the Cigar Mile are: King Guillermo (Uncle Mo), Performer (Speightstown), Mr. Buff (Friend or Foe), and Majestic Dunhill (Majesticperfection).

Woodslane Farm homebred Wolfie’s Dynaghost (Ghostzapper) lived up to the promise he had been showing in the morning with his 33-1 upset debut win at Aqueduct Saturday, according to trainer Tom Albertrani.

“The horse was showing lots of potential and talent working on the dirt,” Albertrani said. “He was doing so well. He ran very impressively. I was expecting a big effort, but I was cautiously optimistic. I had a good feeling about him handling it all.”

Wolfie’s Dynaghost is expected to ship south to Albertrani’s winter base at Palm Meadows Training Center.

“We’re probably going to regroup, ship to Florida and just get a feel for him when he gets down to Florida and see what the next step might be,” Albertrani said. “Hopefully, he’ll be an exciting horse to target some bigger things.”

Wolfie’s Dynaghost’s half-brother Sadler’s Joy (Kitten’s Joy), a Grade I winner on the turf, will make his next start in Saturday’s GIII Red Smith S. at Aqueduct, according to Albertrani.

Malibu Moon Filly Always in Command at Big A; Earns Rising Stardom

Cheyenne Stables LLC’s Harper’s in Charge (Malibu Moon) ran to advanced billing to post an extremely easy debut victory worthy of the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction. Pounded all the way down to 7-5 off an 8-1 morning line, the $220,000 KEESEP yearling zipped out of the gate and was immediately a length in front. She cruised along through splits of 22.83 and :46.84, and continued into the lane in complete command as Manny Franco peeked back for competition. Nobody could run with the leader, and she hit another gear for good measure in midstretch while running up the score to 6 1/2 lengths. Chad Brown/Klaravich firster Commandandcontrol (Quality Road) was second best.

The winner’s unraced dam Azara (More Than Ready) is a half-sister to superstar Tepin (Bernstein) and MGSW Vyjack (Into Mischief). She sold for $875,000 in foal to Into Mischief at KEENOV ’16. The resulting foal, I’ll Fight Dempsey, was a $300,000 yearling and debut winner at Gulfstream in February. Azara produced a Flatter colt earlier this term before being bred back to Into Mischief.
