Godolphin Flying Start Applications Accepted From Dec. 1

Applications for the 2021-2023 in take of trainees for the hugely popular Godolphin Flying Start (GFS) program will be accepted beginning Dec. 1, 2020 and will remain open through Feb. 8, 2021. The online portal has been opened a month earlier than normal to provide applicants additional time in a process that has been more streamlined than ever.

GFS is a two-year international management and leadership program for the Thoroughbred industry and provides its trainees with practical, hands-on work and study experiences in five different countries.

“It is fantastic that we have been able to deliver the first- and second-year course during these unprecedented times,” said Clodagh Kavanagh, executive director of GFS. “Trainees have had many of the same experiences as previous year groups as well as enhanced virtual learning and technology. By August 2021, when the new intake of Godolphin Flying Start trainees are due to commence the course, we will be able to deliver the best of our traditional and of our newly developed training and networking capabilities. We look forward to receiving their applications over the coming months.”

Viadera Bests Blowout Again to Give Brown One-Two in the Matriarch

Chad Brown stablemates Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and Blowout (GB) (Dansili {GB}) took their show on the road, but the result was the same as once again Juddmonte Farms’ Viadera got the best of her gutsy rival to win the GI Matriarch S. with a dramatic late surge at Del Mar Sunday. When the duo last met, Viadera was just able to get her nose in front on the line after Blowout set a torrid pace in the Sept. 25 GIII Noble Damsel S. at Belmont Park.

Blowout zipped out to the early lead at Del Mar Sunday, was clear around the first turn and completed the opening quarter in :22.62, but Juddmonte homebred Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) surged to the lead midway down the backstretch and was two lengths in front of Blowout through a half in :45.63 as Viadera remained unhurried near the back of the pack. Juliet Foxtrot was still in front at the top of the lane, but Blowout reengaged that foe as they passed the three-quarters in 1:09.37. The Peter Brant colorbearer took a slim lead with a furlong to run, but Viadera was finding a seam to run through and closed powerfully to just get on top on the line.

“I had to work for that one,” admitted winning rider Joel Rosario. “She’s a good filly, a really good filly. But she makes you work. I had to stay after her. She can run, though, there’s no doubt. I’m lucky that Chad Brown gives me an opportunity like this. Grass horses and especially fillies. He’s the best.”

Viadera’s win capped a successful holiday weeked on the west coast for Brown, who also won the GI Hollywood Derby and GIII Jimmy Durante S. and was second in the GII Seabiscuit S.

“This weekend has been amazing,” said Brown’s longtime assistant Jose Hernandez. “I didn’t know which filly was the winner, but I’m happy it turned out to be Viadera. My boss Chad Brown is an amazing trainer and I just do my best for him. It’s an amazing job for me and I love the horses. In the future, I don’t know when it would be, if Chad wanted to come out here with a string, I’d like that. We like it out here.”

Group placed in Ireland with trainer Ger Lyons, Viadera was transferred to Chad Brown this summer. Fourth behind fellow Brown trainee Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) while making her stateside debut over a yielding turf course in the June 6 GIII Intercontinental S., she earned her first U.S. win in the July 17 De La Rose S. at Saratoga. She made it two in a row when she nailed Blowout on the line to win the Noble Damsel last time out.

Pedigree Notes:

Sacred Shield produced a full-sister to the winner last year and a colt by Camacho (GB) this year. The mare is a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 winner Passage of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and to the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Twice Over (GB) (Observatory).

Viadera is one of 10 graded winners for Bated Breath and one of two in the U.S. His Simply Breathless (GB) won last year’s GIII Wilshire S. The Juddmonte stallion has been represented stateside this year by stakes winner and multiple graded placed Feel Glorious (GB). Last year, his Daayeh (GB) was  second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Can the Man Colt Upsets DeMille

Beer Can Man, making his first start for Little Red Feather Racing and Kevin Bogart’s Sterling Stables and trainer Mark Glatt, reeled in pacesetting Commander Khai in the final strides to win the GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. at Del Mar Sunday. Sent off at 19-1 in his first try at a mile and away from Indiana Grand, Beer Can Man settled in third along the rail as Commander Khai took the field through fractions of :22.53 and :46.84. Commander Khai attempted to shake loose in upper stretch, but Beer Can Man was tipped out and bound past that foe while before holding off Caisson to the wire.

“One jump out of there he came [back] to me,” said winning rider Juan Hernandez. “He settled real well. I just found my spot tracking the leaders and I was happy. At the quarter pole, I asked him to go and he did. He really fired. He didn’t want to let horses go past him, either. He’s a nice horse.”

Racing for breeder Ron Patterson and trainer Thomas Short, Beer Can Man graduated going five furlongs over the Indiana Grand turf Aug. 31 and he was purchased privately following an allowance win over the same Sept. 30.

“We’ve had him about six weeks,” Glatt said. “We entered him the first weekend of the meeting, thinking we could run then and then come back in this race. But that race didn’t go. So [the owners] told me to get him ready to go a mile. I was a little skeptical to be honest, but the horse relaxed great, Juan put a nice ride on him and he got the money.”

Pedigree Notes:

Ron Patterson purchased Beer Can Man’s dam, Cheesecake, as a 3-year-old for $30,000 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age Sale. The winner’s third dam, Classic Value, produced multiple graded winner Class Kris (Kris S.), dam of Grade I winner Student Council, as well as the dams of graded winners Gulch Approval and Don’t Get Mad.

Beer Can Man is the first graded winner for his sire Can the Man, winner of the 2014 GIII Affirmed S. The stallion’s three stakes winners include Spectacular Gem, a two-time stakes winner on the turf last year and winner of this year’s Kentucky Downs Preview Tourist Mile S. He has also been represented by Truck Salesman, second in this year’s G3 Al Shindagha Sprint at Meydan.

Lovestruck didn’t bat an eye over the leap from a Sept. 7 maiden special weight win over this distance at the Spa into black-type company in the Tepin S. Her one-length maiden victory notched a solid 75 Beyer Speed Figure and she’d been entered twice prior to the Tepin, including the rained-affected Chelsey Flower S. earlier in the month.

Eager out of the gate in the Tepin, Lovestruck was kept under a hard hold by rider Junior Alvarado. He kept the gray reserved in third on the inside through a quarter in :24.05 and a half in :50.50. Looking for room, she moved out several paths to find a seam in upper stretch. Lovestruck was sitting on go and once she found the front about a sixteenth from home, a couple of right-handed taps was all she needed to edge away with authority and remain undefeated in two starts.

“She’s been ready for quite a while,” said Alvarado. “We were expecting the kind of run from her that we saw today. There’s still room for her to improve. She’s still a little bit green and when she got to the lead she was wandering around the track, which is fine. When she puts it all together, we’ll get a little more from her.

“I knew she was going to be sharp, but I like to teach them to relax behind horses and have a nice finish. I didn’t want to just let her go. Even though it was a slow pace, I knew I was close enough that she wouldn’t have too much to do at the end.”

The 140th stakes winner for Tapit, Lovestruck is a Godolphin homebred and is the fourth black-type winner out five foals to race for her unraced dam. Love Style, herself out of GISW Likeable Style, is best known as the dam of the late MGISW and stellar sire Scat Daddy. The 21-year-old mare has a weanling filly by Into Mischief and has been bred back to Frosted for next term. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
