OBS Winter Mixed Sale Kicks Off Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company kicks off their 2021 season Tuesday with the two-day OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Tuesday's session starts with a 183-head consignor-preferred session which will be immediately followed by a 120-head Horses of Racing Age session. Wednesday's open session consists of 354 horses and is a mix of broodmares and short yearlings. Both sessions start at 10:30 a.m.

Those numbers include late supplements. The supplemental catalogues will be available on the grounds and those additional horses will sell immediately following the original catalogue.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” OBS's Tod Wojciechowski said. “We have a good book of yearlings and mares, as well as some nice racing age options. We saw some bright spots in [Keeneland] January and hopefully some of those bright spots carry down here.”

Covering stallions include Enticed, Collected, Speightster and Tapit, as well as Florida-based stallions, such as St. Patrick's Day, Khozan and Girvin. Short yearlings on offer include the offspring of such stallions as Accelerate, Always Dreaming, Bolt d'Oro, Constitution, Into Mischief and Mendelssohn.

During Monday's under-tack preview of the auction, a pair of colts shared the fastest three-furlong work of :32 2/5.

Load to Fire (More Than Ready), hip 306, an unraced 4-year-old colt, worked his :32 2/5 three furlongs for consignor Woodard Sales. Hip 315, an unraced 3-year-old colt by Distorted Humor, worked in :32 2/5 for consignor Oscar Brown Stables.

Four horses enter the Winter sales ring off recent wins on the racetrack. Pledge (Candy Ride {Arg}) (hip 360) broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths at Turfway Park Jan. 2; Kramden (Kitten's Joy) (hip 362) won at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday; Bear Brian (Tiznow) (hip 368) broke his maiden on debut at Sam Houston Race Park Jan. 9; and Lower for Longer (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) (hip 370) broke her maiden at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday.

The 2020 renewal of this auction generated $4,957,800 of turnover from 359 transactions with an average of $13,810 and median of $7,000. The sales-topper was a $165,000 yearling colt by Union Rags, who was purchased by Blue Sky Stables.

OBS will continue to implement COVID-19 safety protocols and provide online bidding.

“We are still committed to trying to provide the safest environment possible,” Wojciechowski said “We will continue with the COVID protocols we initiated last year. In addition, there will be a mask mandate for inside the building and the back walking ring. It is obviously something we have to deal with. That is one reason the online bidding was implemented, so buyers unable or unwilling to travel can still shop.”

The sale will be streamed on the TDN homepage. Click here for the full catalog.

Outwork Filly Stays Unbeaten at Oaklawn

8th-Oaklawn, $84,000, Alw, 1-24, (NW1X), 3yo, f, 6f, 1:11.89, my, 1 1/2 lengths.
ABROGATE (f, 3, Outwork–Hot Coffee, by Burning Roma) became the third winner on Oaklawn's Sunday card for her owners, trainer and jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. A six-length debut winner at Churchill Nov. 12, she'd been flattered when the runner-up from that heat returned to take her next two starts and was backed down to 4-5 favoritism facing a promising group. Away well, the dark bay was content to press from second through an opening quarter of :22.78 before poking her nose in front while flanked by rivals through a :46.62 half. Southern Grayce (Liam's Map) mounted a stiff challenge in the lane, but Abrogate turned her back to get the job done by 1 1/2 lengths. The winner, who hails from the family of Grade I winners Big Drama and Sheer Drama, has a 2-year-old half-sister by Daredevil and yearling half-brother by Good Samaritan. Her dam visited Hard Spun for 2021. Sales history: $75,000 Wlg '18 KEENOV; $270,000 Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $99,492. Desormeaux Sidelined With Back Fractures

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux suffered fractures in his back when going down in a spill in Saturday's fifth race at Santa Anita. In a post on his Facebook page, Desormeaux said the spill caused a “couple little bone cracks” in his back, but that he will not need surgery. Desormeaux added that his doctor “says it's completely a pain management situation.”

The 50-year-old three-time Eclipse Award-winning rider was aboard Scat's Choice (Scat Daddy) for trainer Vann Belvoir in the $25,000 claiming event when the 3-year-old filly broke down, throwing Desormeaux to the track. He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena complaining of hip pain. Scat's Choice was euthanized and is the first racing fatality at Santa Anita since 2019.

Desormeaux had just recently returned to riding at the start of the Santa Anita winter meet after a five-month hiatus that included a stay in an alcohol rehabilitation center.

Hidden Scroll Strolls Home in First Start for Cox

Named a 'TDN Rising Star' off his 14-length debut win and 104 Beyer at Gulfstream two years ago, Hidden Scroll (Hard Spun) disappointed as the favorite in both the 2019 GI Florida Derby and GII Fountain of Youth and only managed one other win during his nine-race tenure in two seasons for Hall of Famer Bill Mott. The former Juddmonte runner was always highly regarded, but frequently tried his connections with behavioral issues which were never more apparent than when going to the Gulfstream gate last January after an eight-month layoff. He became fractious, lost his rider after being loaded in the gate, and was scratched by the stewards. He flashed his ability next out in March with a second double-digit win and a 102 Beyer, but didn't hit the board in four other starts last year.

Entered in last year's Keeneland November sale, Hidden Scroll sold to his new connections for $525,000 as further evidence of the latent ability believed to be bubbling beneath the surface. New conditioner Brad Cox tuned him up with a four-furlong bullet move at Oaklawn Jan. 17 in :47 2/5 (1/125).

Hammered down to 1-2 for his 5-year-old debut, Hidden Scroll broke smoothly and was shuffled back to midpack after steadying slightly in traffic behind a first quarter in :21.77. He was eager and hard held by Florent Geroux, then let go after a half in :46.04 around the six path coming off the turn. The eye-catching move sent him straight to the front and he strolled home a facile winner under a hand ride. Royal Daaher (Daaher) chased him home, 2 1/4 lengths behind in second.

Cox, considered the favorite to be named the outstanding trainer at this coming week's Eclipse awards, had a big day Saturday with another horse he also turned around: his Knicks Go (Paynter) won the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S.

Hidden Scroll's unraced dam, Sheba Queen, was sold for $7,500 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale and shipped to Turkey for two years before returning to the U.S. in 2019. She was bred to Mendelssohn for this term after delivering a Flintshire (GB) colt in Turkey in 2018 that also came stateside. Sheba Queen is out of French Group 1 winner Etoile Montante (Miswaki) and is a half to MGSW Starformer (Dynaformer) from the extended family of Juddmonte homebreds Bonny South (Munnings), a GSW & GISP runner of 2020, and Sun Path (Munnings), fourth in last week's Silverbulletday S., who are also in the Cox barn.
