Redatory Named Texas Horse of the Year

On the strength of three victories in state-bred stakes company, Redatory (Oratory) has been named Texas Horse of the Year for 2020.

The 6-year-old gelding was nearly unstoppable against Texas-breds last term, winning the Houston Turf S. at Sam Houston and the Richard King Turf S. and Texas Hall of Fame S. at Lone Star Park, successfully defending his title in the last two named races. He fell a neck short of winning the Assault S. for the second year running last July.

Other divisional champions included: 2YO Filly–Con Lima (Commissioner); 2YO Colt/Gelding–Hulen (Tapiture); 3YO Filly Boerne (Fed Biz); 3YO Colt/Gelding–Gold Pilot (My Golden Song); Older Filly/Mare–Ima Discreet Lady (Discreet Cat); Co-Champion Older Horse–Redatory and Sunlit Song (My Golden Song); Champion Broodmare–My Silver Song (My Golden Song).

Disco Partner Sires First Foal

Two-time graded winner and track-record setter Disco Partner (Disco Rico–Lulu's Number, by Numerous) was represented by his first foal when Plenty of Chrome (Big Drama) produced a filly at Rockridge Stud in New York, stallion home of Disco Partner. The filly was bred by John Graziano, Sr. and Patricia Generazio.

The latter bred Disco Partner and raced the popular gray with Christophe Clement. The New York-bred was victorious in 11 of his 33 career trips to the post, including the Jaipur S. in 2017 and 2018 when it was conducted as a Grade III and then a Grade II event, respectively. In the 2017 renewal, Disco Partner stopped the clock in Belmont course-record time of 1:05.67 for six furlongs. Disco Partner also won black-type races at 5 1/2 furlongs, seven furlongs and at a flat mile. He was also third in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2017 and 2018 and in the GI Jaipur S. in 2019.

Oaklawn Cancels Presidents’ Day Weekend Racing

With extreme cold temperatures and the possibility of ice in and around Hot Springs, Arkansas, Oaklawn park has cancelled its live racing programs from Saturday, Feb. 13 through Monday, Feb. 15, and will reschedule the three graded and one listed stakes that were set to take place.

“The weather forecast does not look promising this weekend between the ice and frigid temperatures, so out of consideration for the safety of the horses, our horsemen and fans, we wanted to make this call as soon as possible,” Oaklawn General Manager Wayne Smith said. “We appreciate the cooperation we have received from our horsemen and Racing Commission. Though we are frustrated Mother Nature has thrown us a curveball, our rescheduled stakes will create a spectacular weekend of racing next week.”

The GIII Bayakoa S., the GIII Razorback H. and the GIII Southwest S. have been pushed back to Saturday, Feb. 20, while the Dixie Belle S. and Downthedustyroad S. will now run Sunday, Feb. 21. Entries for the Feb. 20 program will be taken Sunday, Feb. 14. The track will stage 11 live races Feb. 20 and 10 races Feb. 21.

Vote on HHR By Full KY House Could Come Thursday

A vote on the fate of historical horse race (HHR) gaming in Kentucky by the full House of Representatives could come as early as Thursday after lawmakers Wednesday morning continued to fast-track the “emergency” Senate bill to legalize the slot machine-like form of betting by defining “pari-mutuel wagering” to include previously run races.

About 17 hours after SB 120 passed the full Kentucky Senate by a 22-15 vote, the proposal sailed through the House Licensing, Occupations and Administrative Regulations Committee Feb. 10.

Representative Adam Koenig (R-Erlanger), who chairs that committee, said after the bill cleared his committee that the earliest it could be debated and voted upon on the House floor is Feb. 11.

“There are some more conversations to be had in our caucus,” Koenig told Casino.org reporter Steve Bittenbender via text message.

If the vote doesn't happen Thursday, the next earliest date on Kentucky's legislative calendar for the House to be in session is Tuesday, Feb. 16. This Friday is marked as a “draft day” for lawmakers, and the traditional weekend off extends through Monday next week because of the Presidents Day holiday.

Proponents of the bill are aiming to align HHR in a way that they believe will make the slots-like form of gaming constitutionally legal so the machines can keep generating $2.2. billion in annual handle. The Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund's purse-money cut from HHR is three-quarters of 1% of that handle.

HHR was put into peril Jan. 21, when the Supreme Court of Kentucky denied a petition for rehearing an earlier judgment that called into question the legality of HHR because it didn't amount to “pari-mutuel wagering.” The question over that legal definition, led by anti-gambling activists, has worked its way through the court system ever since HHR was first allowed by the state in 2012.
