Track Superintendent’s Field Day Returns to Indiana Grand

Following a two-year hiatus, the 19th annual Track Superintendent Field Day is set to return Sunday, June 13 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The event kicks off with a reception at the Holiday Inn Express in Shelbyville followed by two days of conference activity at Indiana Grand June 14-15.

Moderated by Nancy Holthus, on-air paddock analyst at Indiana Grand, numerous industry experts will be scattered throughout the two-day event regarding surface and soil sciences, the latest in equipment used to maintain track surfaces, agronomic practices, and other tactical safety measures to assist track superintendents with their day-to-day routines.

“This year, we have over 70 tracks represented at the event,” said the event's founder Roy Smith, Indiana Grand's track superintendent since 2015. “Due to continued travel restrictions, we won't have anyone internationally like we generally do, but we will still have a good representation from tracks across North America.”

Indiana Grand also hosted the 2016 renewal of the event.

Open to the public, several equipment displays will be trackside during live racing June 14-15.

Twirling Candy Colt Outruns His Odds in Churchill Unveiling

Pendergest, Reeves Head Online Racecourse Manager Program

The inaugural Racecourse Manager Certification program, presented by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and University of Kentucky, will take place Monday, June 14 at 11 a.m. ET. Entitled “Cultivation of Turf for Compaction and Wear,” Monday's two-hour session will feature presentations by Keeneland Director of Racing Surfaces Jim Pendergest and Atlantic Tractor's Jamie Reeves, who will present John Deere research and development findings.

The upcoming program includes:

“Turfgrass aeration–why, how, when” – Mike Boekholder, Boekholder & Associates
“How often in practice: Lessons from Del Mar, Woodbine, Fair Grounds and Churchill Downs” – panel discussion led by Michael “Mick” Peterson, Ph.D., Director of the Racetrack Safety Program at the University of Kentucky and Executive Director of the Racing Surfaces and Testing Laboratory (RSTL)
“Tractor selection (100 hp with creep), tires and tow versus 3-pt. (John Deere Research and Development)” – Jamie Reeves, Atlantic Tractor
“Topdressing and surface maintenance. What can you add or use to eliminate wear and divots? Why pick one thing over another?” – Geoffrey Rinehart, MS, Turfgrass Management Lecturer, University of Maryland, and Logan Freeman, Mountain Branch Golf Club, Joppa Maryland

The Racecourse Manager Certification program curriculum is an online curriculum designed for turf surface maintenance personnel. The online classes are free. Individuals who complete the video courses and pass a test that requires a $50 fee will receive a certificate of completion from the University of Kentucky. Participating Thoroughbred racetracks that enroll their personnel will receive credit toward future accreditation by the NTRA Safety & Integrity Alliance. The curriculum for the turf management course was developed by Michael “Mick” Peterson, Ph.D., Director of the Racetrack Safety Program at the University of Kentucky and Executive Director of the RSTL.

Rain Forces Pimlico to Cancel Friday Card

With persistent heavy rain falling and more in the forecast throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, Friday's live program at Pimlico was canceled after the second race. According to the National Weather Service, up to an inch of rain had fallen in the Baltimore area with another inch expected. The NWS also issued flood warnings for Central Baltimore County and Baltimore City. The national weekly Stronach 5 wager, which was scheduled to begin with Pimlico's eighth-race finale, was also canceled.

Live action is scheduled to return to Pimlico with an eight-race program Saturday, beginning at 12:40 p.m. Sunday's 10-race program (12:40 p.m.) features five stakes.
