Into Mischief Colt on Top at Saratoga

A colt by leading sire Into Mischief sparked a spirited bidding war Tuesday night at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, with Coolmore's MV Magnier eventually coming out on top with a winning bid of $2.6 million. Hip 168 was consigned by Gainesway, Agent XIX and is the second foal out of Paola Queen (Flatter), winner of the 2016 GI Test S. at the Spa. Don Alberto Corp. paid $1.7 million for Paola Queen at the 2017 Keeneland November sale.

Best Buys Bolt d’Oro Half to Rachel Alexandra

Shortly after selling an $800,000 Quality Road colt (hip 114), Larry Best's OXO Equine put those funds to good use, landing a Bolt d'Oro half-brother to none other than Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra for $1.4 million. The colt's MGISW sire is by Medaglia d'Oro–just like Rachel. The Mar. 2 foal was consigned to the sale by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency as hip 132 on behalf of Dr. Dede McGehee's Heaven Trees Farm.

U.S. Senate Ignores Horse Slaughter Issue

The U.S. Senate passed a trillion-dollar infrastructure bill Tuesday without any provision to ban the export of live horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter for human consumption, putting in jeopardy the anti-slaughter provision adopted more than a month ago in the House by a voice vote.

The Senate assembled anew its Infrastructure bill, taking the House bill and number, H.R. 3684, the INVEST Act, but little else. The Senate effectively stripped an amendment led by U.S. Reps. Troy Carter, D-La., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., John Katko, R-N.Y., Dina Titus, D-Nev., and Steve Cohen, D-Tenn. and conceived by Animal Wellness Action to H.R. 3684 that would have banned the transport of equines across state and federal lines for the purposes of slaughter for human consumption.

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, D-N.J., made an attempt to keep the anti-slaughter transport language in play by filing his own amendment #2296, but that effort gained no momentum, with few Senators treating the anti-slaughter provision in a serious-minded way.

“We are disappointed the Senate continues to treat the ongoing slaughter of tens of thousands of horses as anything but an urgent matter,” said Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action, who was recently honored by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, II for his work to protect horses. “Here was an opportunity to solve a major animal welfare problem that the American public overwhelmingly supports and that's been circulating in the Senate for a quarter century. House Members should vote against the Senate-passed infrastructure bill or amend the measure to restore the anti-slaughter language.”

“We've watched tens of thousands of horses endure a horrible passage to Canada and Mexico every year and then get slaughtered at foreign abattoirs for a small segment of consumers in Asia and Europe,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Center for a Humane Economy. “Americans want to see this ruthless and predatory industry stop gathering up and victimizing American horses and burros. Failing to take up this issue was a terrible missed opportunity for the Senate.”

4,034 Catalogued for KEESEP

A total of 4,034 yearlings have been catalogued for Keeneland's 78th annual September yearling sale, scheduled for Sept. 13-24 in Lexington, KY.

“This is an exciting time at Keeneland as we welcome Tony Lacy as our new Vice President of Sales and Cormac Breathnach as our new Director of Sales Operations, while longtime Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell remains on the team in a consulting role,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “We have initiated a number of new features to further enhance the September Sale and facilitate the process for buyers and sellers with the goal of creating a consistent sale format each year and further ensuring a stable marketplace.”

Previously announced changes to the September sale this year include an RNA Reoffer at the conclusion of a two-day Book 1.

“For those passionate about Thoroughbred racing,” Lacy said, “Central Kentucky and Keeneland are destination experiences. We intend to provide those attending the September Sale a memorable stay to enjoy the best of what the Bluegrass has to offer.”

Week 1 of the auction will feature two Book 1 and Book 2 sessions followed by a dark day on Friday, Sept. 17. Books 3 and 4 will take place in the subsequent days, with three Book 5 sessions spread over the final two days of the sale–one on Thursday, Sept. 23 followed by the final two sessions both on the sale's final day, Sept. 24.

“Keeneland remains customer-focused in our mission to provide the absolute best marketplace this September,” Lacy said. “We adjusted the sale format after many meaningful conversations with our customers, who expressed their strong desire to see a significant number of yearlings before a break.”

As for combining the last two Book 5 sessions, Lacy said, “This change will allow buyers to have a full day of yearlings to consider rather than two shorter sessions at the end of the sale and will generate a more vibrant market for all involved on Friday.”

Book 1 sessions will begin at 1:00 p.m.; Book 2 sessions at 11:00 a.m.; and the remaining sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m.
