Gilbert Campbell Passes Away

Gilbert G. Campbell, who owned Stonehedge Farm South near Williston, FL with his wife Marilyn, died Thursday at Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts following a brief illness. He was 91. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Gary and daughter Susan.

Longtime Stonehedge Farm South manager, Larry King, said “He loved his horses and we inspected them all every time they came down, and he would say, 'I can't wait to see these run.' Marilyn is very involved and loves the horses and his wishes, which he had told me many times, was for it to keep right on going forward.”

Leading Florida breeder and former president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association, Campbell was a multiple graded stakes-winning owner with 461 wins and earnings of more than $13 million. His top homebreds include GSW Ivanavinalot, dam of two-time champion Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro).

Jockeys and Jeans Raises Record Funds

Last Saturday's Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser held at Monmouth Park raised $340,000, breaking the record of $312,000 raised in 2019 when the event was held at Canterbury Park. Organized by an all volunteer group, Jockeys and Jeans has now raised a total of $1.9 million for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

“I've heard it said that jockeys don't get the credit they deserve by the racing industry and don't do enough to help each other,” said Jockeys and Jeans President Barry Pearl. “We just proved that is a myth.”

At least 50 members of the racing community purchased sponsorships, including presenting sponsor Caesars Entertainment. The crowd of 200 included a dozen Hall of Fame riders.

Jockeys and Jeans Man of the Year was Brian Elmore, the former President of Racing at Indiana Grand Racetrack & Casino, site of the second Jockeys and Jeans event, and currently Director of Indiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, which is a major event donor.

G.R. Carter Jr., who won six consecutive national Quarter Horse riding titles and 10 overall, received the Uphill Push Award, given annually to the person who provides the most aid to disabled former jockeys. Carter secured donations of over $32,000 in Quarter Horse breeding rights.

Bisphosphonate Complaint Against Metz Dismissed

A complaint against trainer Jeff Metz regarding a positive bisphosphonate test from last year was dismissed during a closed session vote of the California Horse Racing Board commissioners Sept. 15. According to a release from the CHRB, the board believed it would be unfair to punish Metz for the positive test of his trainee, Camino de Estrella, because testing and a subsequent investigation revealed that the substance had been administered in 2018–well before the horse was in Metz's care. The Maddy Laboratory at UC Davis detected the presence of Tiludronic Acid in a urine sample taken from Camino de Estrella after he finished sixth in a race at Santa Anita last Sept. 27. The horse was subsequently disqualified and will remain so.
