Breeders’ Cup Announces Post Times

The Breeders' Cup today announced post times for the Nov. 5-6 World Championships at Del Mar. There will be 14 Breeders' Cup races and eight undercard races. The official race order and wagering menu for both days of the Championships will be announced Oct. 27.

The 38th Breeders' Cup begins Nov. 5 with Future Stars Friday, featuring all five Breeders' Cup races for 2-year-olds. There will be five undercard races preceding the first Breeders' Cup race, with the first race post time at 11:55 a.m. PT. Friday's first Breeders' Cup race will be race six, which will have a post time of 2:50 p.m. PT. Friday's 10th race, the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, will have a post time of 5:30 p.m. PT.

There will be 12 races on the Nov. 6 program, featuring nine Breeders' Cup races. The first race post time will be 10:15 a.m. PT. The first Breeders' Cup race will be race four, which will have a post time of 12:05 p.m. PT. Post time for the $6 million GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, race 12, will be at 5:40 p.m. PT.

Arapahoe Increases Purses

With three weeks remaining in the 2021 horse racing season at Arapahoe Park, racetrack management increased all overnight purses by 2,000. In addition, the purse for the Gold Rush Futurity will see its purse increased from $35,000 to $100,000. The Butch Gleason Classic for older horses will now be a $50,000 race, up from $20,000.

Colin Sherwood Passes Away

Thoroughbred trainer Colin Sherwood, a native of Perth, Western Australia who won the 1960 G1 Railway S. with Wesmaster, died Sept. 29 in Safety Harbor, FL., after a brief illness. He was 90.

Sherwood enjoyed considerable success on the racetracks of his homeland for 15 years before becoming a bloodstock agent in the early 1970s, exporting racehorses and stallion prospects to horsemen in Singapore, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Africa and the United States. He returned to racing in the late 1980s and resumed training, competing in the mid-Atlantic region before establishing his base at Tampa Bay Downs, where he retired in 2013.

Survivors include his daughter Margo Flynn, his daughter-in-law, Jane Cibelli; a granddaughter, Amanda Creel; grandson-in-law James Jewhurst; and great-grandson Ben Jewhurst. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Eileen Sherwood.

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital to Host Client Education Seminar Oct. 12

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital will host “Rood & Riddle Responds,” an educational seminar for people engaged in the equine industry, on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Embassy Suites in Lexington. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks, but not required.

In its 36th year, the Rood & Riddle Client Education Seminar will continue with the question-and-answer format. This year's panel will include: a surgeon, an internal medicine expert, a reproduction specialist and a breeding farm practitioner. The panel will also include Dr. Lutz Goehring, who is the Warren Wright, Sr. – Lucille Wright Markey Endowed Chair in Equine Infectious Diseases at the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Center.
