Astern Filly Upends Miss Grillo

The second-longest shot on the board in a compact field of six, Jeff Treadway homebred Sail By (Astern {Aus}) sat closest to a soft pace and took full advantage of her trip to cause the upset in Saturday's GII Miss Grillo S. at Belmont Park.

Away alertly from the inside gate, Sail By conceded the lead to rank outsider Charlee O (Tourist), who enjoyed a soft time of it up front through an opening half-mile in :49.40. Stablemates and market leaders McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Kinchen (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) were content to linger behind midfield, saving their best for last. The pacesetter still had things very much her own way after six furlongs in 1:14.36, but Junior Alvarado had Sail By set to strike and they pounced on the leader a furlong down before sprinting home best. Kinchen and McKulick were simply left too much to do given the shape of the race, but kicked home their final two furlongs in :22.11 and :21.88, respectively per Trakus, in efforts that can easily be upgraded.

“It wasn't a plan [to be forward today], but I'm glad he [Junior Alvarado] did things just as he did,” said winning trainer Leah Gyarmati. “He let her break and she broke really well and the other horse went which was perfect because it got her to settle.”

Sail By was the most 'experienced' of the Miss Grillo entrants, having broken her maiden at first asking–just as her dam had done–at 28-1 going six furlongs over this course June 18. A sound second in the Aug. 1 Colleen S. going a sharper five-furlong trip, Sail By was a latest pacesetting third to Miss Interpret (Street Sense) in the off-turf P.G. Johnson S. at Saratoga Sept. 2.

As for a trip to Del Mar, the conditioner added: “Any time you're even thinking about having that kind of opportunity is wonderful. I'll have to talk to Jeff [Treadway, owner-breeder], but I'm sure he is game and wants to go. That's a conversation we'll have to have.”

Sail By is the first North American graded winner and third black-type winner overall for her sire (by Medaglia d'Oro) and is set to become the sixth Breeders' Cup starter for Treadway, who sent out Johnson winner and Miss Grillo third Coasted (Tizway) to finish a bang-up second to New Money Honey (Medaglia d'Oro) in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf. Sail By is the first foal from her dam, who is also responsible for a yearling full-brother to Sail By and a colt foal by Oscar Performance.

Unbeaten Corniche Wires American Pharoah in Style

'TDN Rising Star' Corniche (c, 2, Quality Road–Wasted Tears, by Najran), the $1.5-million OBS April topper earlier this spring and a jaw-dropping debut winner going 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar Sept. 4, led them every step of the way to run to the money as the 2-5 favorite in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita.

Pappacap (Gun Runner), winner of the GII Best Pal S., was second; third out maiden winner Oviatt Class (Bernardini) was third.

Corniche is the 10th winner of the American Pharoah for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert.

“You never know until you send them two turns whether they'll be able handle it or not, and it looked like he handled it pretty well,” Baffert said. “He's got a great mind so I'm pretty happy about that. Down the backside he was being chased by a really good horse. It was a really good race all around.

“We're just going to let the process play itself out and not think about that now. The main thing is to keep them healthy and have them ready for the next dance. I just focus on these horses day in and day out. I have a lot of responsibilities.”

Sent to the front from his rail draw by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Corniche showed the way through an opening quarter in :23.55 and a half mile in :47.26. Challenged by stablemate Rockefeller (Medaglia d'Oro) approaching the three-eighths pole, Corniche let it out a notch as they turned for home and was hand ridden late to a dominating 3 1/4-length score while making his two-turn debut.

“There's just so much upside to this horse,” Smith said. “That is what's really exciting about him. When he broke his maiden as impressive as he did, he just gave me that feeling that we weren't even close to his full potential, and he gave me that feeling today. He's a big colt and he carries a lot of flesh. As he starts to get even fitter and harder inside, he's gonna be a force to reckon with.”

Corniche is the 50th stakes winner/28th graded stakes winner/12th Grade I winner for Quality Road.

The son of six-time GSW and GI Matriarch S. runner-up Wasted Tears (Najran) was led out unsold on a bid of $385,000 at KEESEP last year, but turned in a smooth sales breeze in :10 flat to become one of two horses to eclipse the seven-figure barrier in Ocala.

Wasted Tears, also responsible for the late stakes-placed Coffee Crush (Medaglia d'Oro), had a filly by Mendelssohn in 2020.

Speedway Stables and Baffert also teamed up for a win with Quality Road's 'Rising Star' Roadster in the 2019 GI Santa Anita Derby and a runner-up finish in the GI Malibu S.

Trappe Shot Colt Shoots and Scores in WAYI Speakeasy

Chicago-based invader One Timer took to the turf Friday to skate into the GII Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar with a guaranteed spot in the starting line-up. A 12 1/2-length debut romper at Arlington back in June over recent GIII Iroquois S. runner-up Tough to Tame (Speightster) and another future stakes performer, the bay paired up 80 Beyer Speed Figures when annexing Woodbine's Victoria S. July 31. He was scratched as a would-be heavy favorite from the Aug. 28 Arlington-Washington Futurity won by stablemate Nobals (Noble Mission {GB}), having shown no published works since before the Victoria, but breezed three times in September over the Arlington all-weather and soon proved he was ready to roll.

One Timer was hustled along between horses by ET Baird to knock heads with favored Forbidden Kingdom. He began to get away from that rival after a :21.01 opening quarter, and looked to be in complete control approaching the straight as Forbidden Kingdom struggled to corner. Time to Party got going and made a race of it late, but One Timer had already built up an insurmountable advantage and glided under the line a comfy winner.

“First of all I want to say the reason that he's name that is because [trainer] Larry [Rivelli]'s son is an excellent hockey player,” said Baird. “He's a hot prospect right now and that's where his name comes from.”

Rivelli's son Dominick plays right wing for the Green Bay Gamblers, a junior team in the competitive USHL, and has committed to Miami of Ohio.

“He broke well, I had to ask him out of there, but he's pretty professional outside of the post parade,” Baird said of One Timer. “He just kept running true. I think he took to the [turf] great. We worked him one time in Chicago [back in July] over the grass and I happened to work another horse, an older horse on the same morning, and the older horse ended up winning a stake after that work, against older horses, but he didn't work that well over it, and this horse worked excellent over it. It pretty much hasn't changed–he just likes to go. I mean, he's competitive, he loves to run.”

The winner is a grandson of GSW grasser La Gran Bailadora (Afleet Alex), who produced 2019 GI Belmont S. winner Sir Winston (Awesome Again). He has a yearling half-brother by Tapwrit and a foal half-sister by Arrogate. Spanish Star, who sold for $275,000 to Crestwood Farm at last year's Keeneland November sale, visited Twirling Candy for 2022.

Easy Money in Chandelier

'TDN Rising Star' Ain't Easy (f, 2, Into Mischief–Ameristralia {Aus}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) put on a show to remain unbeaten while punching her ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GII Chandelier S. at Santa Anita.

Electric Ride (Daredevil), a runaway debut winner at Del Mar Aug. 28, was second; second out Del Mar maiden winner Desert Dawn (Cupid) was third. Heavily favored GI TVG Del Mar Debutante S. heroine Grace Adler (Curlin) never factored while fifth.

Ain't Easy, a sharp 5 1/4-length debut winner going 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 21, raced in a joint- second under a snug hold on the inside rounding the clubhouse turn in this two-turn debut. Joel Rosario sent her through an inviting opening along the inside to challenge for command at the half-mile marker. The 7-2 chance began to let it out a notch a quarter of a mile from home and wasn't for catching from there, scoring by 4 3/4 good-looking lengths.

“She acted very professional, sitting behind horses,” said winning trainer Phil D'Amato, who also saddled the third-place finisher. “When Joel [Rosario] wanted to, she came up the inside, which I like to see with a young horse. She just looked like she was having fun in the stretch. I think it set up perfect. A good two-turn experience, confidence booster, an easy win, where it didn't look like she was taxed too much, so I like everything I saw right now.”

Ain't Easy becomes the 100th stakes winner/45th graded winner for her all-conquering sire Into Mischief. The winner's dam–Group 3-placed sprinting on the lawn in Australia and a full-sister to Japanese MGSW Fiano Romano (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})–is also responsible for a colt by Bolt d'Oro of 2020 and a filly by Mendelssohn of this year. She was bred back to Vino Rosso. Ain't Easy's second dam Heart Ashley (Lion Heart) was a two-time Grade III winner and brought $500,000 from James Bester, agent, at the 2010 KEENOV sale.
