Grayson-Jockey Club to Establish ‘A. Gary Lavin Chair’

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, the nation's leading source of private funding for equine medical research, has created an endowment to support the “A. Gary Lavin Chair.” The full-time position, created in recognition of the late Dr. Gary Lavin's contributions to the foundation and to equine health, will include research advisory committee (RAC) member recruitment, orientation, and management; management of grant applications, reviews, deadlines, and conflict eliminations; fundraising; and publicity.

“Dr. Lavin made innumerable contributions to Grayson over the last 40 years, including time spent as a valued member of both our board of directors and research advisory committee,” said Grayson's chair Dell Hancock. “He was instrumental in the reorganization of our research approval process, which resulted in the development of the research advisory committee we use today. Dr. Lavin believed that the veterinary community should be involved in Grayson's work, and we are proud to honor him with this position, which will facilitate a veterinary relationship with the foundation that he believed was so important.”

Oaklawn Park will be supporting this new role with a lead gift of $250,000.

“For three generations, the Cella-Lavin families have been working together in the best interest of the Thoroughbred,” said Oaklawn's president Louis Cella. “We all have such great memories of Doc. It is a great honor to kick off this campaign to create the A. Gary Lavin Chair.”

Donations to Grayson-Jockey Club for the endowment can be designated specifically for the A. Gary Lavin Chair position. Visit grayson-jockeyclub.org for more information.

“My father was a lifelong advocate of equine health and longtime supporter of Grayson, and my family is proud to see his legacy continue through this new position,” said Kevin Lavin, vice chairman of Grayson. “We are appreciative of the support that it has already received and thankful to the Cella family for their initiative in the fundraising effort.”

Into Mischief Filly Continues Upward Trajectory in Zenyatta

Lightly raced Private Mission handled older foes with aplomb Sunday, earning a guaranteed spot in the starting gate for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff in the process. A debut winner sprinting here nearly a year ago, the bay was a speed-and-fade fourth at odds-on in the following month's Desi Arnaz S. at Del Mar and subsequently went missing. She reappeared to annex a local optional claimer in June, and took to two turns emphatically when romping by 6 1/2 lengths in Del Mar's GIII Torrey Pines S. Aug. 21.

Keeping longshot Samurai Charm (First Samurai) in her sights early, the bay took a clear advantage entering the home bend and looked like the winner every step of the way after that. As Time Goes By completed the exacta and a big weekend for Bob Baffert that also included victories in the GI Awesome Again S. and GI American Pharoah S.

“I'm happy to run one-two,” Baffert said. “Private Mission, I'm glad I stayed home with her. I decided this would be best for her with the Breeders' Cup in mind, we didn't want to stress her.  She's on the improve, getting better and better. I'm really happy with the way both fillies ran.”

Private Mission was scratched out of last Saturday's GI Cotillion S. at Parx.

“She broke well and got herself into the race,” jockey Flavien Prat said of his winning trip. “She relaxed well and took a nice breather going to the three eighths pole and ran good when I asked her to make her move. I thought this race was better than last time, for sure.”

Pedigree Notes:
Private Mission is one of 45 graded stakes winners for leading sire Into Mischief–three of which have been out of Unbridled mares, led by champion female sprinter Covfefe. Important broodmare sire Unbridled is responsible for the dams of 43 graded winners, including the likes of Tapit, Orb and Shackleford.

The winner's dam was a two-turn stakes winner on the dirt at Louisiana Downs. A half-sister to 2000 GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Status (A.P. Indy), she sold to Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant for $2.3 million while in foal to A.P. Indy at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Another A.P. Indy daughter of Private Gift, MSW and GSP Secret Someone, was represented by a $1-million Into Mischief colt that sold to Mike Ryan at the recent Keeneland September sale. Private Gift's daughter Gift List (Bernardini) is the dam of GISW Dunbar Road (Quality Road), who is expected to contest next Saturday's GI Juddmonte Spinster S., another prep for the Distaff.

Private Gift's 2-year-old filly Batik (Honor Code), a $240,000 KEESEP grad, has been working regularly at Monmouth Park. The 19-year-old mare was given a year off after foaling Batik, but produced a Candy Ride (Arg) colt Apr. 1 and was bred back to Uncle Mo.

Cairo Memories followed up on her 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy debut with an effortless open-length victory in the Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita Sunday. The gray filly, sent off as the distant second choice, settled just off the early leaders, powered to the front off the turn and glided clear to wire, possibly earning herself a start in the Breeders' Cup. Heavy favorite Helens Well completed the exacta.

Cairo Memories was a 4 1/2-length debut winner going one mile of the Del Mar lawn Sept. 5 for Schroeder Farms. David Bernsen was added to the ownership line for this second start.

“She's been doing everything right,” said winning trainer Bob Hess. “We were encouraged by the way she broke her maiden and she's been moving forward in her training. Hopefully, this sets us up for the Breeders' Cup Dance.”

“She brought some new energy from her first start,” added winning rider Kent Desormeaux. “I think she was excited. I spent more time in the post parade calming her down. I worked her at Del Mar and before I ever rode her I thought she was great. I was with the owners in the paddock and that was the longest wait because I wanted to see how deep the water was, and she's shown [now] that she could really swim.” Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

WINNING MAP (c, 2, Liam's Map–Starlet O'Hara {SP}, by Discreetly Mine), sent off the 2-5 favorite, powered home an easy four-length winner of his debut at Santa Anita Sunday. The gray colt, a $55,000 KEESEP yearling turned $525,000 OBS March juvenile, went right to the early lead and was in control through a quarter in :22.08. Winning Map shrugged off that foe in upper stretch and drew clear to the wire.
