Live Racing at Belmont Park Extended Through Nov. 7

The Belmont fall meet, originally scheduled to conclude Oct. 31, will be extended to include three additional dates from Friday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 7, it was announced Saturday. These dates were originally scheduled to be run at Aqueduct Racetrack as opening weekend of the Aqueduct fall meet.

New York State is continuing to operate a COVID-19 mass vaccination site throughout the first floor of Aqueduct. As a result, the facility remains closed to the public.

“NYRA is committed to supporting the ongoing effort to vaccinate New York, and Aqueduct Racetrack is an important piece of that puzzle,” said NYRA President & CEO Dave O'Rourke. “This schedule adjustment provides our fans the opportunity to experience world class racing on-track while enjoying Breeders' Cup weekend at Belmont Park.”

Belmont Park will host five stakes originally scheduled for Aqueduct, beginning with the Tempted S. and Atlantic Beach S. on Friday, Nov. 5. On Saturday, Nov. 6, the stakes action will include the GIII Turnback the Alarm H. and the Stewart Manor S. The extended Belmont fall meet will now conclude on Sunday, Nov. 7 with the GIII Nashua S.

The 15-day Aqueduct fall meet will now begin on Thursday, Nov. 11 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 5.

Munnings For Sale

No, not that Munnings. His namesake. The OG. Sir Alfred James Munnings.

Six of the painter's works from the estate of the late Betty Moran with an estimated value of between $2.4 to over $3.8 million will be auctioned off at Christie's auction house in New York City, Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m.

Munnings, the most renowned English sporting artist of the 20th Century, was known for his exceptional equine art, which has brought prices of over $7 million at auction. The six pieces are lots 32-27 in the European Art sale.

They are:

Shrimp Leading Ponies Across the Ringland Hills, Norfolk, estimated to sell for between $300,000-$500,000

A Park Meeting, The Eclipse Stakes, Sandown Park ($200,000-$300,000)

Study of a Jockey in the Duke of Westminster's Colors ($15,000-$20,000)

After the Race, Cheltenham ($700,000-$1,000,000)

Who's The Lady, and Two Studies ($800,000-$1.2 million)

The Seventh Earl of Bathurst, W.F.H. of the V.H.W., with Will Boore, Huntsman ($400,000-$600,000)

View the entire catalogue of European art here, or download the Moran catalogue here.

“To have a collection of this quality and diversity is rare,” said Deborah Coy, the Senior Vice President and Head of the Department of European Art at Christie's. “It's unique in that. A lot of people will collect racing, or they'll collect hunting, or equestrian portraits. This encompasses all of that.”

Shrimp Leading Ponies Across the Ringland Hills, Norfolk, is expected to fetch up to $500,000

Elizabeth 'Betty' Ranney Moran, who raced the likes of 1985 GI Belmont S. winner Creme Fraiche and bred champion Unique Bella and Hard Spun, passed away at her home in Malvern, Pennsylvania, Jan. 23, 2020, at the age of 89.

Moran grew up on Brushwood Farm, then a dairy farm, in Willistown Township, Pennsylvania, and was said to love farm life and animals of any kind. She won her first stakes race in 1978, and achieved her biggest success seven years later when Creme Fraiche took his Classic. Almost 20 years later, she would win the GI Arlington Million with Kicken Kris.

“She was probably the most generous person I've ever met, not to just write a check, but to ring a bell for the Salvation Army in downtown Philly,” said Reiley McDonald, her equine advisor for over 30 years, at the time of her death. “She was a tough, enthusiastic, hard-driving woman and we will all miss her very much.”

The collection runs from a Norfolk landscape featuring a collection of the artist's ponies (Shrimp Leading Ponies), to a paddock scene at Sandown (A Park Meeting), to a jockey study, to a post-steeplechase scene (After the Race), to what is expected to be the star of the collection, Who's the Lady. The latter depicts Queen Elizabeth II's aunt, Princess Mary, at a hunt. Originally a smaller canvas, it is inscribed by Munnings, “This was smaller canvas with HRH Princess Mary on grey that I put aside or a larger one s shown in this Exhibition with Lord Harewood and the Bramham Moor Hounds. In 1946, I had the canvas relined and enlarged, making the figure of HRH into the central figure (Lucy Glitters) and then surrounding her with members of the Nonsuch Hunt as now seen lady.”
Munnings died in 1959, and had kept this painting himself until at least 1956.

“These pictures really do speak for themselves,” said Coy. “We sent a selection to London to be viewed, and one out to Southampton, and they're very well received, everywhere. Munnings has an appeal in both sides of the pond, which is a very important thing about this art. Many racing art collectors are just English buyers, but not so with Munnings. He has a very strong American following, as well.”

Munnings's work, of course, has often found a home with racing people like Moran. But it's the scope of his equine subjects that makes him so interesting, and lasting.

Said Coy, “I think he is one of the more interesting of the equestrian artists, because he does do a wide range of equestrian subjects. They're just beautiful. And his racing scenes are spectacular. The breadth of his subject matter is extraordinary.”

It seems a bit ironic that just this week, two of racing's most prominent art collectors, Peter Brant and John Magnier, bought into a Munnings of their own with their purchase of a piece of Jack Christopher, who heads next to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile as one of the top choices.

But then, racing and art have always had a certain synchronicity, and it wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone if some–if not all–of these works ended up in the hands of someone every bit as revered in racing as Betty Moran.

‘Rising Star’ Rounds Out Deep Impact Double In Tokyo

Less than an hour after Profondo (Aus) stamped his authority on the G1 Spring Champion S. at Randwick at just his third career start, 'TDN Rising Star' Command Line (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) followed suit in the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup (1600mT) at Tokyo Racecourse in his second trip to the races and first appearance graduating stylishly over the course and distance June 5.

Sent off the marginal favorite in advance of Sternatia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), a half-sister to Group 1-winning miler Stelvio (Jpn), the athletic colt was allowed to find his feet beneath Christophe Lemaire and settled in fifth position of the seven runners, but noting that longshot Lord Reliable (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) was galloping them along at a walking pace, the Frenchman slipped Command Line a bit of rein and the duo advanced be second through an opening half-mile in :50 flat. Settled nicely in spite of the moderate tempo for the run around the turn, Command Line was held together into the long straight, was felt for with a bit more than 300 metres to travel and outsprinted Sternatia to the line, then galloped out powerfully. Stunning Rose (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) made it a clean sweep for the Sunday Racing colours and breeder Northern Farm.

Pedigree Notes:

While Profondo was becoming the 52nd top-level scorer for Deep Impact in Sydney, Command Line took the late sire's tally to 178 black-type winners and 144 graded/group winners.

A $72,000 purchase by Kim Valerio and Michael Dubb at Keeneland September in 2013, Condo Commando, the 'splash-tastic' winner of the 2014 GI Spinaway S., is a daughter of MGSW Yearly Report who is also the dam of MGSP Checklist (Gone West). Command Line is the third foal from Condo Commando, who was acquired by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.5 million at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Unsurprisingly, the mare's first cover was the legendary Shadai stallion and the result was Al Jannah (Jpn), who fetched nearly $1.5 million as a foal at the 2017 JRHA Select Sale and who has since placed four times at group level. The 3-year-old full-sister, Torre de Mando (Jpn), is a maiden winner from seven runs and Condo Commando is the dam of a yearling filly by Heart's Cry (Jpn) and a weanling Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) filly that was hammered down for $761,188 at this year's foal sale.

Newspaperofrecord’s Dam to Sell at The Tattersalls December Mares Sale

Group 3 winner Sunday Times (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}–Forever Times {GB}, by So Factual), the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), will be offered at the upcoming Tattersalls December Mares Sale from Nov. 29-Dec. 2. Carrying a full-sibling to the GI Just a Game heroine, Sunday Times will be consigned by Richard and Sally Aston's Goldford Stud on behalf of Allan Belshaw.

A winner of the G3 Sceptre S. and second in the G1 Cheveley Park S., Sunday Times will be joined by her fourth foal in the Goldford Stud consignment at Tattersalls, the winning Daily Times (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who is also in foal to Lope de Vega (Ire).

“Sunday Times is a truly outstanding broodmare with a great future,” said Richard Aston. “She was a very smart race filly, she has produced a champion 2-year-old, she has a current Classic pedigree which will appeal to breeders from all over the world and she is gorgeous. It is a rare combination and Mr. Belshaw will be racing Newspaperofrecord's yearling own sister and this year's Kingman (GB) filly foal which is why he has decided to sell both Sunday Times and Daily Times.”

A half-sister to the dam of Group 1 winner Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), stakes winner and multiple Group 1-placed Pink Dogwood (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and group winner Diamond Fields (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Sunday Times's first foal was the listed winner Classical Times (GB) (Lawman {Fr}), who was also third in the G3 Chipchase S., while Newspaperofrecord was her third. The latter, who sold for 200,000gns out of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, also won the GII Miss Grillo S., GIII Intercontinental S., and was third in the GI First Lady S. for owner Klaravich Stables and trainer Chad Brown. The latest produce for Sunday Times is a yearling full-sister to Newspaperofrecord and a weanling filly foal by Kingman (GB).

After Newspaperofrecord's Breeders' Cup victory, Brown said, “Today she showed how good she really is and for her to win as easy as she did is remarkable.”

TDN columnist Bill Finley wrote that, “her performance might well be regarded as one of the best in the history of the series.”
