Immaculately Bred Empire Maker Filly Shines at Del Mar

6th-Del Mar, $72,500, Msw, 11-20, 2yo, f, 6 1/2f, 1:17.45, ft, 2 1/4 lengths.
EMPIRE GAL (f, 2, Empire Maker–Double Tapped, by Tapit) opened her account at first asking Saturday at Del Mar with a good-looking victory over 6 1/2 furlongs Saturday. Prominent in the early stages, the bay filly drifted back to a midfield position while racing well out into the track approaching the turn. Given her cue with a little less than three-eighths of a mile to travel, the 34-5 chance advanced four or five wide into the stretch, took aim on the front-runners nearing the furlong grounds and came away to a 2 1/4-length victory over longshot Peripheral (Ghostzapper). The debuting Micro Share (Upstart) won a photo for third over favored Adare Manor (Upstart). A half-sister to GSW Majestic Eagle (Medaglia d'Oro, $387,129), Empire Gal is out of a full-sister to champion and GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Untapable who was acquired by Bridlewood for $1.3 million in foal once again to Medaglia d'Oro at Fasig-Tipton November in 2015. Grade II-winning granddam Fun House (Prized) was named Broodmare of the Year in 2014 following Untapable's champion 3-year-old filly campaign and is also responsible for GISW Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}). Third dam Bistra (Classic Go Go) was a half-sister to GISW Olympio. Double Tapped is the dam of a Union Rags colt that fetched $200,000 from Untapable's owner Winchell Thoroughbreds at this year's Keeneland September sale and a weanling filly by Omaha Beach. She visited Nyquist this past breeding season. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Well-bred Medaglia d’Oro Filly Sharp on Debut

7th-Churchill Downs, $119,047, Msw, 11-20, 2yo, f, 1 1/16m, 1:45.44, ft, 2 1/4 lengths.
LA CRETE (f, 2, Medaglia d'Oro–Cavorting {MGISW, $2,063,000}, by Bernardini), a half-sister to Clairiere (Curlin), GISW, $1,290,992, took care of business impressively on debut going a tough, two-turn distance of 1 1/16 miles here. Facing only seven rivals, the 8-5 favorite caught a flyer beneath Joel Rosario and shot out to the front. The Stonestreet homebred showed the way while uncontested through fractions of :23.53 and :47.84. She let it out a notch rounding the far turn, kicked for home with a five-length advantage and was geared-down late en route to a 2 1/4-length victory over Opening Night (Flatter). Cavorting, a three-time GISW carrying the yellow-and- burgundy Stonestreet silks and a $360,000 KEENOV weanling purchase, had a colt by Curlin in 2020. She was bred to Into Mischief for 2022. The aforementioned Clairiere, a very good fourth after a wide trip in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff earlier this month, also won her debut over this same course and distance last fall. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $69,460. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Albert the Great Euthanized

GISW Albert the Great (Go For Gin) was euthanized Friday at Old Friends in Georgetown, Kentucky, where he has been pensioned since 2017. According to attending veterinarian Dr. Bryan Waldridge, the 23-year-old stallion was euthanized due to chronic sinus infection.

Campaigned by owner Tracy Farmer and trainer Nick Zito, he earned his first graded stakes while capturing the 2000 GII Dwyer S. and, later that year, he added the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup. At Saratoga that summer, he was a close-up second in the GI Travers S. At four, he captured the GIII Widener H. at Hialeah Park, GII Suburban H. and GII Brooklyn H. at Belmont Park, and ran second in four other Grade I contests, including the GI Woodward S. and GI Whitney S.

Albert the Great retired from racing in 2001 following a third-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic with a eight wins, six seconds and four thirds from 22 starts, 15 of which were made in graded stakes. His lifetime earnings totaled $3,012,490. He entered stud in 2002 at Three Chimneys Farm before relocating to Pin Oak Lane in 2008. At stud, he sired such Grade I winners as Moonshine Mullin, Albertus Maximus and Nobiz Like Shobiz, who is currently retired at Old Friends.

“Albert the Great was aptly named,” said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. “He was the master and everyone else was just a serf. He didn't need you to be his friend, just his servant. He was certainly a unique iconoclast and he'll be missed. Our thanks to Three Chimneys, Tracy and Carol Farmer, and Nick Zito,” Blowen added. “They raised a great one.”
