A Toast to Tapit’s Jerome Winner

The well-bred Courvoisier (Tapit), a narrow maiden winner at fourth asking at the Big A last time Dec. 2, picked up 10 points for the GI Kentucky Derby while securing his second straight win in Saturday's sloppy $150,000 Jerome S.

His third and second-place finishes in his first two starts respectively set the colt up for a move forward with the addition of blinkers Oct. 27 at Delaware Park, where he was caught late going a mile and lost by a nose. Stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for his final start as a 2-year-old at Aqueduct and coming off Lasix for the first time, he came through with yet another hard-fought effort, breaking his maiden by neck.

Cutting back to a mile here, he brushed Smarten Up after the start, and was promptly passed by Cooke Creek and an intent Hagler (Tapiture) went out to lead. Out pacing the former, the 4-1 shot glued himself to the frontrunner and the pair pushed each other through a :45.78 half. Coming to the top of the stretch, Jose Ortiz had already been riding the $600,000 Keeneland November graduate through most of the far turn and the colt continued to respond as the pair powered through the foggy final yards to deliver a career high.

“Right now, it looks like [Courvoisier] has a nice affinity for Aqueduct and in four more weeks is the [GIII] Withers [S. Feb. 5] going two turns,” said trainer Kelly Breen when asked about the nine-furlong Kentucky Derby point race. “We're excited for it because it's where we were pointing him. We didn't know if we were even going to run in the Jerome because we believe he is a two-turn horse.”

Courvoisier is his champion dam's first winner and black-type horse. On the track, said dam took the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and GI Starlet before retiring for a hotly anticipated second career as a broodmare. Take Charge Brandi brought $6 million from Hill 'n' Dale at 2015 KEENOV, was a $3.2 million buyback in 2019 at the same sale, and went through the star-studded Fasig-Tipton November ring last year for $1.15 million to Three Chimneys. Take Charge Brandi's unraced Take Charge Curlin (Curlin) went for $850,000 at 2018 Keeneland September, while Best Time (Tapit) missed his reserve after the last bid came up $775,000 in 2019 at the sale. She has a 2-year-old filly by Justify named Justly, a yearling filly by Quality Road ($450,000 FTKNOV graduate), and was bred to Uncle Mo for 2022.

Simplification Keeps the Ball Rolling for Not This Time

Simplification (Not This Time) became the 17th stakes winner and third in the last six days for his in-form sire with a convincing victory in this first step on the road to the GI Florida Derby and–perhaps–beyond.

An even fourth on his 5 1/2-furlong debut on the synthetic track Oct. 1, the bay overwhelmed a group of Florida-bred maidens by 16 3/4 lengths Oct. 23, good for a 92 Beyer. He couldn't put them back to back, faltering to be third at long odds-on Nov. 13, but had his fair share of supporters Saturday.

Away without incident, Simplification was part of the early scramble for the lead and assume command outright hooking up with the course proper after an opening quarter of :23.70. Well rated through the middle fractions while traveling nicely for Javier Castellano, the second betting choice was a bit late swapping his leads in upper stretch and lengthened away in the final eighth of a mile before galloping out strongly into the turn.

“I told everyone, these are good horses but I thought the more distance would be better for my horse,” winning trainer Antonio Sano said. “When the horse ran six furlongs for the first time, he won easy, but that was a maiden special weight. The next race the horse was not ready. He did not work every day because [we had] the option to sell the horse. The horse was not sold. I told the owner, we'll enter Jan. 1 for one mile. Castellano worked the horse. He's a special horse, a very good horse.”

France Weiner, who also bred 2005 GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Closing Argument (Successful Appeal) with her husband Irwin, acquired Simply Confection for $80,000 carrying this colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2018. Simplification, whose second dam was a full-sister to champion Ashado, has a yearling half-sister by Mendelssohn that RNAd for $190,000 at FTSAUG last summer and a yearling filly by Audible. The mare is due to Union Rags. The winner is bred on the reverse cross of leading freshman sire Gun Runner.

Plush Horse Donations on Santa Anita Opening Day Net $25K for Aftercare

Mathis plush toy horses, which were available for a $20 donation at Santa Anita Park on last Sunday's opening day, generated a total of $25,000 for the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) and Thoroughbred aftercare. Opening day attendees also received water bottles or Mathis Mile hats. Mathis and Santa Anita Park have already committed to doing the same promotion next year.

“We're thrilled to have raised $25,000 for CARMA, a non-profit organization that will ensure each racehorse has a bright future after racing,” said Bill Mathis, President of Mathis Brothers.  “Together with the thousands of fans who participated on Santa Anita's Opening Day, Mathis Brothers is proud to have helped put the horse first.”

“We can't thank our fans and Mathis Brothers enough for their tremendous support of Thoroughbred aftercare,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager Nate Newby.  “Each dollar raised from this promotion is going directly to CARMA to support the rehabilitation, retraining and retirement of California-raced Thoroughbreds.”

Arrogate Sires First Stakes Winner at Gulfstream

The late Arrogate (Unbridled's Song)'s freshman season finished strong with a pair of good-looking winners on Friday, and on Saturday he was represented by his first black-type winner at the same venue at which he dominated the inaugural GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational almost five years ago.

Alittleloveandluck was sixth in her grassy debut at Saratoga Aug. 29, and seventh after showing the way at Belmont a few weeks later. She improved to third when switched to dirt and outfitted with blinkers at Parx Oct. 18, and broke through by a nose over a next-out graduate in a state-bred event on the local Tapeta Nov. 12.

Well held to sit in the pocket around the first bend, the grey was shuffled back slightly on to the backside as they crawled along. Trapped behind a wall of rivals spinning for home, she was guided far outside by Paco Lopez, and while she spotted her competition some real estate with that move, she leveled off powerfully to inhale Ocean Safari in the waning stages.

The well-bred winner's dam was purchased for just $30,000 in foal to Into Mischief at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale–one year before her daughter Victory to Victory (Exchange Rate) would take the GI Natalma S. en route to champion 2-year-old filly honors in Canada. Points of Grace, winner of the 2009 GII Dance Smartly S., also on the Woodbine turf, produced a colt and filly, respectively, by Tapit in 2020 and 2021. The former fetched $250,000 from Donato Lanni at the most recent Keeneland September sale.
