Olympiad Gets the Gold in Mineshaft

Bill Mott's patient handling paid off with the well-regarded Olympiad, who earned his graded stakes badge in the Mineshaft Saturday. Stalking Silver Prospector from second through early splits of :24.18 and :48.11, the even-money favorite turned up the heat on the backstretch run and jumped clear in the lane to win with ease. Silver Prospector held second and Miles D completed the trifecta.

Graduating at Saratoga in September of 2020, Olympiad checked in second behind GI Runhappy Malibu S. runner-up Baby Yoda (Prospective) in a Saratoga allowance exactly 364 days later. The $700,00 KEESEP buy captured a Keeneland allowance in October and was fourth next out to 'TDN Rising Star' Americanrevolution (Constitution) in Aqueduct's GI Cigar Mile H. Dec. 4. Olympiad ran away to a 7 1/4-length score in a two-turn optional claimer at Gulfstream Jan. 15, earning a gaudy 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

Pedigree Notes:
Olympiad is the 63rd graded winner and 128th black-type scorer for the timeless Speightstown. The winner is also the 18th graded winner and 52nd black-type victor out of a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro. The Speightstown/Medaglia d'Oro cross is also responsible for Grade I winners Rock Fall and Competitionofideas. Olympiad is the second foal out of GSP Tokyo Time, who is also the dam of the once-raced 3-year-old filly Friendship Road (Quality Road); a juvenile filly by War Front, who brought $450,000 from Larkin Armstrong at KEESEP; and a yearling colt by American Pharoah. The half-sister to MGSW & MGISP Hungry Island (More Than Ready) and MGSW Soaring Empire (Empire Maker) is currently expecting a foal by Quality Road. This is also the family of GISWs Preservationist (Arch), Harmonize (Scat Daddy) and Keen Ice (Curlin).

Horsemen’s Rep Says Vitali Meth Positive is Environmental Contamination

In his fight to get out of as one-year suspension after a horse of his tested positive for methamphetamine, controversial trainer Marcus Vitali will have at least one person in his corner. Todd Mostoller, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, which represents horsemen at Penn National and Presque Isle Downs, said that the methamphetamine positive was a result of environmental contamination and that Vital should not have been suspended

“This is somebody who did absolutely nothing wrong,” Mostoller said.

On Friday, the Pennsylvania Racing Commission published its ruling in which Vitali was suspended for one year and fined $10,000 after the horse Single Lady (Shanghai Bobby) tested positive for d-methamphetamine after winning a Aug. 21 maiden special weight race at Presque Isle Downs. Vitali has appealed the suspension.

Mostoller believes the filly came into contact with someone who had been using the drug, and that's how it got into her system.

“The bottom line is that this is environmental contamination,” he said. “There have been a number of methamphetamine positives in Pennsylvania. They've all been at the extremely small picogram level. No one gave methamphetamine to a horse. It's in the environment around us. It's a problem. And our industry has yet to really deal with the problem.”

Mostoller said there have been “three or four” other methamphetamine positives between Presque Isle Downs and Penn National in recent months and that in all other cases the stewards found there were extenuating circumstances and the trainers were not held responsible. The TDN was not able to confirm Mostoller's contention.

In 2017, a Peter Miller-trained horse tested positive for methamphetamine after running in the Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at Penn National. The Pennsylvania Racing Commission ruled that there were “mitigating circumstances” and fined Miller $1,500 but did not suspend him.

In 2016, five horses at Lone Star Park tested positive for meth. The Texas Racing Commission concluded that the horses were contaminated by their handlers and, while the horses were disqualified, the trainers were not penalized

Mostoller hinted that Vitali, who has been in and put of trouble for years, might be treated differently than others.

“This is absurd. It goes beyond common sense,” he said. “Unfortunately for Vitali, he is a hot-button name.”

But Mostoller went on to explain that in the other recent meth cases, it was confirmed that someone handling the horses had used meth. That has not happened with Single Lady.

“In this case, nobody tried to find the source,” he said. “No employees were tested. So, you're certainly not going to find the source of environmental contamination if you don't look for it. This is under appeal and we'll see where it goes from there.”

Single Lady is owned by Carolyn Vogel, 80, who races under the name of Cross Sabres Farm. Prior to Vitali filing for an appeal, Single Lady was placed on the stewards' list for 90 days.  Vogel has been one of Vitali's most loyal owners and has stuck by him despite the trainer's history. She said she has seven horses with him and when asked if she intended to keep them with Vitali she responded, “I will stick by him until further notice.”

When asked what she likes about Vitali, she responded: “He is very good with legs and he is very hands on. He doesn't have too many horses and he is not real expensive. He makes it more affordable and fun.”

Is she concerned about his reputation?

“I don't think he is a cheater,” she said. “He might push the envelope, but he doesn't cheat.”

Vitali is currently racing at Turf Paradise and, due to the appeal, has remained eligible to race there. He has horses entered there on Tuesday and Friday. Both are owned by Vogel.

Speightstown Firster Proves Gamest on Big Easy Bow

4th-Fair Grounds, $55,000, Msw, 2-19, 3yo, 6f, 1:09.58, ft, head.
MOMENTOUS (c, 3, Speightstown–Glory and Power, by Medaglia d'Oro) amassed a solid worktab at this conditioner's South Florida base at Palm Beach Downs and was sent off at just shy of 5-1, the third pick behind fellow firster and 7-5 pick Marsalis (Curlin x Hot Dixie Chick). Momentous was first to break the line from gate 10, but the favorite–a homebred half-brother to recent GIII Houston Ladies' Classic heroine Pauline's Pearl (Tapit)–was driven through by Joel Rosario to take up the running inside the opening furlong and took the field past the half-mile marker in :22.29 seconds. Momentous confronted Marsalis in earnest at the five-sixteenths and led narrowly while racing on his incorrect lead passing the eighth pole. Marsalis was in for the fight and boxed on gamely inside, but Momentous did slightly the better work and proved best by a head while remaining on his right leg under the line. The top two had some 5 1/4 lengths on Major Contender (Distorted Humor) in third. The winner is out of a full-sister to SW Dance d'Oro and hails from the deeper female family of Horses of the Year Saint Liam (Saint Ballado) and Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}), as well as GISW Funtastic (More Than Ready). Momentous is bred on the highly productive cross that has been responsible for the likes of the late GISW Rock Fall, GISW Competitionofideas and additional GSWs Souper Stonehenge, Strike Power and Saturday's GIII Mineshaft S. hero Olympiad. Glory and Power is also represented by a 2-year-old Tapit colt that sold for $400,000 at KEESEP last fall and a yearling colt by Street Sense. The mare is due to Good Magic this season. Yorkton Represented by First Foal

Crestwood Farm's freshman stallion Yorkton (Speightstown) was represented by his first foal in Indiana Feb. 3. A strapping colt out of Bayerly Seen (Bayern) was born at Arrowhead Thoroughbred Center in Fairland. Bayerly Seen is a half-sister to GI Kentucky Derby contender and GIII Lecomte S. winner Call Me Midnight (Midnight Lute).

“This colt is very correct, and has been the best foal to be the first one born on our farm,” says farm co-owner Brandi Steele. “Momma is a wonderful maiden and handles his feisty attitude very well.”
