Forbidden Kingdom Made Future Wager Favorite

Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah), the dominant winner of this past Saturday's GII San Felipe S. owned by micro-share syndicate MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm, has been installed the 5-1 morning-line favorite in the fourth of five Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) pools. Wagering will be offered Friday through Sunday.

Job Fair Saturday for Derby, Churchill Spring Meet

Churchill Downs Racetrack will host a job fair on Saturday, Mar. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to hire positions for the upcoming Kentucky Derby and Spring Meet.

Billed as the “Staff Call to Post,” Churchill Downs and its vendor partners–Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC), Levy Restaurants and Prichard Sports & Entertainment Group and United Tote–will be looking for candidates to fill various positions for Derby Week and the 44-day Spring Meet, which begins a nine-week run Saturday, Apr. 30 through Monday, July 4. The 148th runnings of the GI Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and GI Longines Kentucky Oaks will take place Saturday, May 7 and Friday, May 6, respectively.

Available job positions include catering, cleaning and janitorial, concessions, culinary, food service, guest services and security.

Broberg & Thornton Repeat Atop Delta Standings

Trainer Karl Broberg took his 11th consecutive Delta Downs leading trainer title; Broberg and Matt Johansen's End Zone Athletics, Inc. won their seventh straight leading owner title and 10th in the last 11 years; and Broberg's go-to local rider Tim Thornton sat atop the jockey standings for the fourth year in a row as the Vinton, LA bullring's 2021-2022 meet concluded Mar. 5. The Broberg barn saddled 105 winners and racked up $1,928,820 in earnings, coming close to matching its 107 wins and $2,017,120 during the 2018-2019 season. A total of 78 of Broberg's winners carried the colors of End Zone Athletics, which eclipsed its record-setting 2020-2021 meet with 78 winners and $1,322,480 in earnings this time around. Thornton piloted 129 winners and the earners of $2,782,260.

First Racetrack Maintenance Innovation Award Winners Announced

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) presented the Racetrack Maintenance Innovation Awards to its first class of award winners Monday evening at the Racecourse Managers' Conference and Workshop in Las Vegas. The award was created to celebrate the work of racetrack professionals who have day-to-day responsibilities for the maintenance, protection, and safety of horses and riders at tracks across the US. The 2022 winners distinguished themselves as some of the most innovative racetrack professionals in Thoroughbred racing today.

“It's so important to highlight the work of racetrack managers and operators because their work is critical to the success of Thoroughbred racing,” said NTRA President and CEO Tom Rooney. “I congratulate this first class of winners and thank each of them for their dedication to the safety and well-being of horses and riders.”

The 2022 winners are:

Leif Dickenson – Turf and Landscape Superintendent at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club – Nominated for his introduction of fibers in turf profiles at Santa Anita Park to improve the sheer strength of sand without the use of alternative fine materials that would impede drainage.

Joe King – posthumously awarded, former New York Racing Association (NYRA) Track Superintendent – Nominated for being the first person in racing to systematically include testing of the racing surfaces on a regular basis and for being a critical asset in designing racetrack surfaces.

Dennis Moore – Superintendent at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Santa Anita Racetrack, and Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Racing – Nominated for his innovative work that led to maintenance and operational innovations for the synthetic racetrack surfaces at Remington Park and Hollywood Park, and for his work to consistently evaluate new technologies including fiber and new maintenance equipment for dirt and synthetic surfaces.
