OwnerView Resumes Virtual Conferences for 2022

OwnerView's virtual Owner Conference series has resumed for 2022 after a successful series in 2021. OwnerView will also be hosting an in-person conference in Saratoga July 25-26. The series is hosted by The Jockey Club (TJC) and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton Equine, and Stoll Keenon Ogden.

“The virtual sessions enable those who cannot attend our conference in Saratoga to gain meaningful insights into Thoroughbred ownership, and they complement the panels that will be offered at the in-person event,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView.

The virtual sessions were kicked off Mar. 8 with a panel on accounting, plus legal and insurance considerations for Thoroughbred ownership, sponsored by Airdrie Stud and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Tuesday's panel was moderated by Carolyn Conley. Panelists were Davant Latham, Davant Latham Bloodstock & Insurance; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, director of tax services, Dean Dorton.

The next session, to be held Apr. 5, will focus on pedigrees and conformation. Sponsored by OBS Sales, it will be moderated by Caton Bredar and will include panelists Phil Hager, Taproot Bloodstock; Chad Schumer, Schumer Bloodstock Agency; Gayle Van Leer, Gayle Van Leer Thoroughbred Services; and Tod Wojciechowski, director of sales, OBS.

A total of six virtual panels are scheduled in 2022, and sessions are recorded for registrants to view at their convenience if they cannot watch live. Registration information for both the in-person and virtual conferences can be found at ownerview.com/event/conference.

Caesars Launching Racebook App in Partnership With NYRA

Caesars Sportsbook, in partnership with NYRA Bets, is launching a new horse racing account wagering app, Caesars Racebook, Caesars and the New York Racing Association announced Thursday. Available for download this spring, Caesars Racebook will utilize the NYRA Bets platform to provide bettors with pari-mutuel wagering services on premier horse racing content from more than 250 tracks around the world.

Caesars Racebook will offer wagering on marquee horse racing events in the United States, as well as on international tracks. The new app will also offer players all the additional benefits of NYRA Bets, including race replays, handicapping insights and more.

Sovereign Award Winner Harvey Warner Dies

Harvey Warner, the Manitoba Jockey Club (MJC) Board Chair, passed away recently, according to Assiniboia Downs. He was one of the original founders of the non-profit MJC in 1993 and played a large part in rescuing Assiniboia Downs and the Manitoba racing industry from bankruptcy. He was recognized in 2020 with a special Sovereign Award in honor of his contributions to the sport.

A longtime owner, Warner was also a former president of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) of Manitoba. He is survived by his wife, Edie, and daughters Sheri and Michelle, and their families.

Joe Bravo Wins George Woolf Award

Veteran rider Joe Bravo, who moved his tack last year from New Jersey to California, has been named the recipient of Santa Anita's 2022 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. The Woolf Award recognizes those riders whose careers and personal character compliment the sport of Thoroughbred racing. It can only be won once and is voted on by jockeys nationwide. Bravo will be honored in a Runhappy winner's circle ceremony at Santa Anita Sunday, Mar. 27.

“It really is an honor to now be part of this circle of riders, joining all of these guys that I grew up with or grew up underneath, I'll put it like that,” said Bravo. “I was lucky enough to win the East Coast version of the Woolf Award, the Mike Venezia Award in 2018, and now to be honored here on the West Coast, wow, you don't know what an honor this is. My Dad will be coming out and this makes all the hard days, the mornings that we work, it makes it all worthwhile. There's probably only one award above this that I'd like to have, and that's the Hall of Fame.”

A native of New Jersey, Bravo–whose nickname has long been “Jersey Joe”–has been a dominant force in the Mid-Atlantic, particularly at Monmouth Park, dating back to the early 1990s. He announced his move to California last year, stating it was due to a change in riding rules instituted by the New Jersey Racing Commission. Bravo, who has won 13 riding titles at Monmouth and nine at the Meadowlands, has won nearly 5,600 races.

The Woolf Award was named for the late Hall of Fame rider who is probably best known for his win aboard Seabiscuit over War Admiral in the 1938 Pimlico match race. An estimated radio audience of 40 million tuned in. Nicknamed “The Iceman,” Woolf died in 1946 from complications arising from a racing accident at Santa Anita the day prior. The Woolf Award has been presented annually by Santa Anita since 1950. The trophy is a replica of the life-sized statue of Woolf that adorns Santa Anita's Paddock Gardens area.

Deshawn Parker won the Woolf Award last year. Finalists this year included Glenn Corbett, Julien Leparoux, Rodney Prescott, and Tim Thornton.
