Stewards Take No Action Against Lezcano

The NYRA stewards have decided not to take action against Jose Lezcano for his controversial ride aboard Foxtail (Mizzen Mast) in last Sunday's first race at Aqueduct.

Lezcano's mount lost the race by a neck after what the chart caller described as, “the rider took a peak behind him at the five-sixteenths, took the advantage while the rider took five more looks to his inside into upper stretch, was asked while surprised by the presence of the winner to her outside at the three-sixteenths then lost the advantage, kept on under a drive while fighting inside that foe in the final furlong and just missed while clear for the place.”

The ride prompted outrage on social media and that evening NYRA released a statement that Lezcano would meet with the stewards for a formal film review Friday.

“Following a formal film review of Sunday's opening race at Aqueduct Racetrack, the Board of Stewards will take no action against jockey Jose Lezcano for his ride aboard Foxtail,” said Patrick McKenna, NYRA's Vice President of Communications. “The matter remains under ongoing review.”

Emerald Downs to Up Purses Again

Washington's Emerald Downs will increase purses by an additional 10% for the upcoming 2022 meeting. The overnight purse increase is the second 10% boost for the meet, making the total increase a robust 20% from last season, and comes on the heels of several incentive programs. It is also the track's third 10% increase since 2019.

“The more people that get tickets, buy food and beverage, and wager on the live races allows us to offer higher purse supplements,” said track president Phil Ziegler. “We are excited to welcome back families for a day of exciting horse racing plus the fun promotions we have with Corgi races, 3rd of July fireworks, and Indian relay races, just to name a few.”

Emerald Downs, owned and operated by the Muckleshoot Tribe, receives approximately 20% of all purses as a supplement from the Tribe. Opening day for the 52-day meet is Sunday, May 15.

Good Samaritan Colt Swiftest at OBS March Breeze Show Opener

A colt by Good Samaritan (Hip 177) worked the fastest quarter-mile in :20 3/5 on the opening day of the OBS March 2-Year-Old in Training Sale's three-day breeze show Thursday.

“He has done things on the racetrack that only a few horses have done that we had our hands on,” said Joe Pickerell of consignor Pick View. “We were going to be very disappointed if he didn't work like that.”

Bred by St. Elias Stable, the gray is out of Sweat and Saddle (Speightstown), a daughter of GSW & MGISP Well Monied (Maria's Mon). This is also the family of GSW & GISP Economic Model (Flatter) and Will's Secret (Will Take Charge). An $82,000 KEENOV buy, he was picked up by the Pick View team for $120,000 at KEESEP.

“We obviously liked quite a bit about to stretch on him,” Pickerell said. “The whole team kept landing on this horse. He is a good mover with a lot of stretch to him. He was a horse we felt would not only handle the 2-year-old sale well, but go on to do some good things. We've always been a big fan of Harlan's Holiday and with Speightstown on the bottom, it made him extra attractive. The intelligence this horse has is probably his biggest strength. Not only is he wicked fast, but the amount of class he has has been fun to watch.”

He continued, “Scott Mallory did a great job with him at the yearling sale and we had to do was keep him looking that good and keep him growing. That is exactly what he did. He is a bigger version of what we bought.”

The fastest furlong was achieved by a Bayern colt (Hip 139), who went in :9 3/5 for Really and Truly Thoroughbreds. Bred in Florida by Caperlane Farm, he was picked up by Rubin Sanchez for $12,000. The colt's second dam is SW & MGSP Amie's Dini (Bandini).

The under-tack show was cut off early due to poor weather and the final set will be worked into Friday's breeze show, which starts at 8 a.m.
