Randy Moss Joins Bettor Things With Joe Bianca

In the second episode of his handicapping-focused podcast Bettor Things With Joe Bianca, the host welcomed popular NBC Sports horse racing television analyst Randy Moss, where the two shared a drink and engaged in an expansive, free-flowing discussion on all things racing, sports and betting. Recently returned from China where he covered the 2022 Winter Olympics for NBC, Moss talked about his upbringing in Hot Springs where he'd sneak into Oaklawn Park, his work in creating the revolutionary Moss Pace Figures, how he ended up covering football for NFL Network, what he thinks the future of data in horse racing looks like and much more.

Later, in honor of Moss's past work with the NFL, Bianca gave out future bets to make for the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, set to be conducted in Las Vegas in late April. Malibu Moon’s Set Sail Goes Coast to Coast for Maiden Breaking Score

6th-Santa Anita, $67,500, Msw, 3-27, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:37.99, ft, 7 1/2 lengths.

SET SAIL (c, 3, Malibu Moon–Fleet of Gold {SP, $109,892}, by Medaglia d'Oro) was third on debut Feb. 26 in a seven panel maiden over Santa Anita's main track after altering course early and losing second by 1 1/4 lengths. Trying a mile here, the bay Mandella trainee broke on top and never looked back, coasting home much the best by 7 1/2 lengths as the 2-1 second choice over One More Bid (California Chrome). Q B One (Uncle Mo) finished third while 6-5 favorite Bletchley Park (Nyquist) finished a distant fifth.

The winner is the second surviving foal out of the stakes-placed half-sister to Indyan Giving (A.P. Indy), the dam of Champion 2-year-old colt Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) and GI Churchill Downs S. winner Flagstaff (Speightstown). Set Sail has a 2-year-old half-brother by Tapit as well as a 2022 half-sister by Speightstown. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, $48,240.

Davis, Rodriguez Take Aqueduct Winter Meet Titles

Jockey Dylan Davis captured the first riding title of his career, posting 63 wins at the 2021-22 Aqueduct Racetrack winter meet that ran from Dec. 9 to Mar. 27. Rudy Rodriguez paced all trainers with 33 wins, while Klaravich Stables secured the owner's title with 10 wins.

Davis, who is represented by agent Mike Migliore, finished nine wins ahead of runner-up Trevor McCarthy and 10 wins clear of third-place Kendrick Carmouche.

“It's incredible. I'm grateful and honored. I've worked very hard for this,” said Davis. “I'm grateful I can have this success and get one of the titles. My agent Mike works very hard behind the scenes to get me the mounts. Thanks to the owners and the trainers and everyone on the backside, especially the horses. The horses are the main thing–they are running for me and putting up performances.”

The 27-year-old native of Manhasset, NY achieved three four-win days Jan. 23, Feb. 26 and Mar. 26, and completed the meet with a record of 301-63-58-36 for total purse earnings of $3,411,574.

Rodriguez won his second consecutive Big A winter meet title and 13th overall training title at NYRA, sending out 33 winners, eight wins more than second-place trainer Rob Atras and 13 ahead of third-place finisher Chad Brown. He earned top trainer honors at last year's Big A winter meet with 36 winners and has taken home a total of 11 titles at Aqueduct.

“It's unbelievable,” said an emotional Rodriguez. “All the credit goes to the people in the barn. Most of the people that work with me here have been with us since day one.”

Rodriguez started 151 horses for a record of 33-22-20 and $1,506,693 in earnings. His runners posted a win rate of 21.85% and a 49.67 in-the-money percentage.

Rodriguez said each of his wins this meet were memorable.

“They're all very special,” Rodriguez said. “It's a lot of hard work dealing with the winter cold.”

Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables posted a 21-10-2-3 record with total purse earnings of $623,160. It was a three-way tie for second between Windylea Farm [38-8-8-2, $331,058], Repole Stable [31-8-4-2, $292,161] and Michael Dubb [33-8-4-2, $458,427].

Live racing continues Thursday at the Big A, Opening Day of the 15-day spring meet that runs through Apr. 24.

Toledo, Gonzalez Win Laurel Winter Meet Titles

A pair of familiar faces topped the jockey and trainer standings following Sunday's closing day of Laurel Park's winter meet, as jockey Jevian Toledo and trainer Claudio Gonzalez reigned again as meet leaders following their titles at Laurel's 2021 fall stand as well as the year's overall Maryland championship.

Toledo, 27, did not have a mount Sunday but took a 10-win edge, 38-28, over five-pound apprentice Jean Alvelo into the nine-race program. Alvelo had six mounts Sunday, winning with Royal Thunder ($3.60) in Race 6 to finish with 29 wins. It was the eighth career meet title, all at Laurel, for the Puerto Rico native, who is represented by agent Marty Leonard. Second to Victor Carrasco with more than $1.3 million in purse earnings, Toledo was also Maryland's overall leading rider in 2015 and 2017.

“I have to thank God; without him it's impossible,” Toledo said. “I've won the summer meet and the fall meet but I never won the winter meet. It's my first one, so it feels really good. It's another accomplishment in my career. My agent does a really good job and I have a lot of support from everyone. They give me a lot of opportunity to ride nice horses, and thank God we got the job done.”

Gonzalez entered Sunday with a 24-23 advantage over John 'Jerry' Robb after sending out a pair of winners on Saturday's card. Robb did not have a horse entered Sunday, while Gonzalez had runners in four races, winning with Danny Chen's Little Ms Scarlet ($7.40) in the fourth race and Magic Stable's I'm Not Slow ($6.40) in the ninth race to raise his meet total to 26.

A 45-year-old native of Chile and cancer survivor, Gonzalez has won nine consecutive meet titles in Maryland dating back to Laurel's 2019 summer stand. It was the 17th career meet championship at Laurel to go along with two at Pimlico for Gonzalez, who has finished as Maryland's overall leading trainer five consecutive years starting in 2017.

“I feel really good. It's like I say, to win one race is tough and to win the title again is a good feeling,” Gonzalez said. “I have to thank all my people, my workers, all the assistants I have, the grooms, hotwalkers, exercise riders, blacksmiths. Everybody does a good job, it's not only me. If you don't have good help, you don't make it. I try to explain to all my workers, it's the little things that make the difference. That's why you have to pay attention to every little thing and sometimes it makes a big difference.”
