Filly From The Lieutenant’s Sole Crop Breezes Bullet at OBS

GSW The Lieutenant (Street Sense), a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify, had just one crop before his life was tragically cut short and a filly from that lone crop as among the bullet breezers during the seventh and final session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale under-tack show Saturday.

Bred and consigned by Becky Thomas's Sequel New York, which stood The Lieutenant, Hip 1123 covered a quarter-mile in :20 4/5.

“She preps well, is a beautiful mover and always trained like that,” Thomas said. “I felt pretty confident. I wasn't sure what we were going to be [time wise], because you never know what the track is like until you go out there, but I knew she would be very quick.”

Campaigned by Mr. & Mrs. William Warren and trainer Mike McCarthy, The Lieutenant won four of 15 races, topped by the GIII All American S. Retired to Sequel at the end of his half-brother's Horse of the Year season in 2018, the bay covered just one season in New York, resulting in 32 foals, after which he was shuttled to Peru. Sadly, he was one of four stallions killed by intruders at Haras Barlovente in Canete in December of 2019.

“It was a terrible loss,” Thomas said. “Mike [McCarthy] said this horse was training lights out with [MGISW] City of Light. He said, 'I love this horse and he is a really talented horse.” He is also a half to Justify, obviously. He was a Street Sense and a big, beautiful horse. We were very lucky to have him.”

As for what she sees in his sole crop, Thomas said, “They are really speedy. I have a couple going to Maryland that are flat runners too and I feel really good about them.”

Two other fillies worked in :20 4/5 Saturday: a daughter of Uncaptured (Hip 1084) (video) and a Curlin filly (Hip 602) (video). Four more fillies went in :9 4/5: a daughter of Into Mischief (Hip 1097) (video), an Army Mule filly (Hip 1131) (video), a filly by Munnings (Hip 1174) (video) and a Firing Line filly (Hip 1226) (video).

The OBS Spring Sale begins its four-day run Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Janney Homebred Posts Flashy Keeneland Allowance Win

5th-Keeneland, $109,450, Alw, 4-16, (NW1X), 3yo, 1 1/16mT, 1:43.75, gd, neck.
LIMITED LIABILITY (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Hold Harmless, by Blame) had just one rival beat for the opening six furlongs of his July 31 debut over the Saratoga turf, only to shoot past the rest of his rivals to graduate by 2 3/4 good-looking lengths. A pace-compromised third as the odds-on choice behind Coinage (Tapit) in the Sept. 1 GIII With Anticipation S. at the Spa, the homebred raced handier to the speed in the Oct. 3 GII Pilgrim S. at Belmont, but could do no better than third. Adding Lasix for this 3-year-old unveiling, Limited Liability was off at a very generous 4-1 and immediately dropped out the back as they went a moderate clip up front. Held together on the turn and still last as they raced inside the final quarter of a mile, the gray was switched out and covered his final 2 1/2 furlongs in a slick :28.57 per Trakus to take best 5-1 Freedom's Way (Declaration of War) by a deceptively comfortable margin. Favored Credit Event (Not This Time) saved ground for the opening six panels and was ridden for luck by Tyler Gaffalione in the stretch, but he was hopelessly locked away passing midstretch and never recovered, finishing 10th. Limited Liability is out of a winning full-sister to GSW Onus, whose daughter Gun Boat (Wait A While) was placed in the grassy Wait a While S. last year at two. The colt's third dam includes MGSW/GISP Ironicus (Distorted Humor),MGSW On Leave (War Front) and GSWs Norumbega (Tiznow), Hunting (Coronado's Quest) and Quiet Harbor (Silver Deputy). Zippy Chippy Dead at 31

Zippy Chippy, horse racing's most loveable loser, has died.

A retiree at Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center, NY., a satellite of Kentucky's Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement, the son of Compliance was 31.

Campaigned by owner-trainer Felix Montserrate–who acquired the horse in 1995 by trading a Ford Truck–Zippy is known more for losing races than winning them. In 100 starts, he never crossed the finish line first. But he earned fame in other ways–for being cantankerous and for putting on carnival exhibitions where he once raced against a baseball player.

In 2000, People Magazine even voted Zippy Chippy one of the year's “Most Intriguing Characters.”

Banned from numerous track due to such antics as refusing to break from the gate, Zippy finally retired from racing in 2004 and had a brief second career as an outrider's pony at his home track, Finger Lakes in New York.

In April 2010, the aging campaigner found a home at Old Friends at Cabin Creek. Under the guidance of Cabin Creek owner and manager JoAnn Pepper, Zippy finally found solace with a paddock mate, Red Down South, a chestnut New York-bred gelding.

In recent years, they were the stars of Cabin Creek.

“Zippy was our main character here, and he lived his life his way,” said Cabin Creek's Pepper. “He was so content, and would not do anything he wasn't in the mood for. He taught me so much about life, and I'll miss him forever.”

“Zippy found his greatest success as a retiree,” said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. “Joann and all of the volunteers at Cabin Creek adored him, and he attracted hundreds of fans to the farm each year. He was finally a star. Our thanks to Joann and Mark Pepper and everyone at Cabin Creek for the wonderful care they gave Zippy,” Blowen continued. “I know he will be deeply missed by all.”

Speightstown’s Under Oath Romps to Rising Stardom

Less than 24 hours after 'TDN Rising Star' Shirl's Speight became the newest top-level scorer for WinStar Farm's outstanding Speightstown in Friday's Maker's Mark Mile, the nursery's homebred son Under Oath followed suit with an eye-catching Keeneland maiden victory to become the 22nd 'Rising Star' for the son of Gone West, still going strong at age 24.

Third to big-figure graduate Unikee (Unified) in a sloppy six-furlong maiden at Gulfstream Mar. 12 and with no fewer than three next-out winners in his wake, Under Oath jumped as the 6-5 chalk, but whereas he showed enough speed to lead in his debut, the blaze-faced chestnut settled off the pace slightly better than midfield and raced in the three and four path to the turn. Forced to cover ground on the bend, Under Oath shifted out five deep as they hit the quarter pole, descended on the leading trio to wrest command inside the final furlong and proved 1 1/2 lengths superior. Juddmonte's debuting Artorius, whose dam Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) was purchased privately with the express intent of being among the first book of mares to be bred to the late Arrogate and won this track's GI Madison S. in her first start for the global breeding giant in 2017, raced in the latter half of the field early on. He charted a similarly wide course into the lane and closed off powerfully before blowing past the winner not far past the wire.

Under Oath's Grade II-winning dam Jojo Warrior was one of four 'TDN Rising Stars' produced by Carson Jen, who also supplied GISW A Z Warrior (Bernardini), the dam of SW Key To My Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MSP Cole Porter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and track record-setter Conch Pearl (American Pharoah); four-times stakes winner and Grade III-placed J Z Warrior (Harlan's Holiday); and GSW/GISP E Z Warrior (Exploit). Under Oath has a 2-year-old sister named Legendary (Justify), a $310,000 KEESEP buyback, and a yearling half-brother by Constitution. Jojo Warrior is due to Speightstown again for 2022.
