Derby, Oaks Workouts Open to Public

Between Saturday, Apr. 23 and Wednesday, May 4, Churchill Downs will be open free-of-charge daily from 7-10 a.m. so visitors can watch GI Kentucky Derby and GI Kentucky Oaks hopefuls train. Beginning Saturday, there will be an exclusive training window for Derby and Oaks participants only from 7:30-7:45 a.m. Derby horses will use yellow saddle towels, and Oaks contenders will bear pink saddle towels.

Visitors should enter the track through the Paddock Gate and can park for free in White Lot. Morning workouts can be viewed between Sections 115-117 of the grandstand. Kentucky Derby Morning Works presented by TwinSpires.com will begin Monday and air on www.kentuckyderby.com/works, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Fans in attendance will be able to watch the show on the track's Big Board and infield televisions.

Medaglia d’Oro Half to Drefong Lights Up OBS

A colt by Medaglia d'Oro (hip 401) became the second seven-figure juvenile of the auction when selling for $1.75 million Wednesday at the OBS Spring Sale. A half-brother to champion Drefong (Gio Ponti), the dark bay was purchased by Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal LLC. He was consigned by de Meric Sales, which purchased him for $325,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale, and was bred by Machmer Hall and Carrie and Craig Brogden.

Lone Star Park Celebrates 25 Years

Lone Star Park celebrates its 25th anniversary season this year with the continued optimism that has permeated Texas racing since passage of the 2019 legislation that channeled a portion of sales tax on horse feed and supplies into purses. The Grand Prairie meet runs April 28 through July 24, most Thursdays through Sundays, plus Memorial Day May 30 and July 4. There is no racing on Thursdays May 5 and 26, June 2 and 30 and July 7. Marquee stakes days include the Lone Star Million Day on Memorial Day, Lone Star Showcase Day on June 19, Summer Turf Festival on July 16 and Stars of Texas Day on July 17. Lone Star Park is scheduled to pay out $12.8 million to horse owners over the 48-date meet, averaging about $268,000 a day.

Midnight Bourbon Dies Suddenly

Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow–Catch the Moon, by Malibu Moon), winner of last year's GIII Lecomte S. and runner-up in the GI Preakness S. and GI Runhappy Travers S., died suddenly Sunday at Churchill Downs.

Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the $525,000 KEESEP yearling purchase died from an “acute gastrointestinal situation,” Asmussen said. The news was first reported by Daily Racing Form.

A close third in the G1 Saudi Cup Feb. 26 and fifth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths, in the G1 Dubai World Cup last time Mar. 26, the remarkably consistent Midnight Bourbon breezed five furlongs in 1:01.20 (15/26) at Churchill Downs Sunday, and became ill shortly thereafter.

“Just a horrible loss to the barn,” Asmussen told TDN. “A lot of people loved this horse, and rightfully so.”

Midnight Bourbon's stacked resume also includes: second-place finishes in the GI Pennsylvania Derby and GII Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby and third-place finishes in the GI Champagne S., GI Clark S. and GII Risen Star S. He came within a neck of defeating champion Essential Quality (Tapit) in a memorable renewal of the Travers. He posted a record of 16-2-6-5 with earnings of $3,557,970.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, Midnight Bourbon is a half-brother to GISW Girvin (Tale of Ekati) and GSWs Cocked and Loaded (Colonel John) and Pirate's Punch (Shanghai Bobby). Midnight Bourbon's unraced dam Catch the Moon was purchased by Stonestreet for $240,000 in foal to Shanghai Bobby at the 2015 KEENOV sale.
