Medaglia d’Oro Again Tops Darley America’s 2023 Fees; Speaker’s Corner Retired

Perennial top sire Medaglia d'Oro once again heads Darley's Jonabell Farm roster for 2023 with his fee remaining at $100,000, the same amount as 2022.

Darley has also added two new stallions to the now-11 horse roster, including G1SW Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) and GISW Speaker's Corner (Street Sense). Mystic Guide, who won the 2021 G1 Dubai World Cup, was retired earlier this year. He will stand for a fee of $15,000 in his initial season at stud.

Speaker's Corner, a Godolphin homebred out of Tyburn Brook (Bernardini) who is bred on the same cross as fellow Darley stallion Maxfield, won the GI Carter H. in April with a dominating performance and a 114 Beyer Speed Figure. He also won this year's GII Gulfstream Park Mile S. and GIII Fred W. Hooper S. before finishing behind Flightline (Tapit) and Life Is Good (Into Mischief) in the GI Metropolitan H. and GII John A. Nerud S., respectively. He retires with a record of 13-6-2-2 and earnings of $739,963. Speaker's Corner will enter his first season at a fee of $20,000.

“We've been very fortunate in the last two years to have produced five high-level performers [Mystic Guide, Speaker's Corner, Essential Quality, Maxfield, and Cody's Wish] and it's even more gratifying that they are all homebreds,” said Darley Sales Manager Darren Fox. “Following last year's retirement of Essential Quality and Maxfield, to again be able to add more top-caliber horses is very, very exciting.”

Essential Quality and Maxfield, who both await their first foals in the spring, will remain at $75,000 and $40,000, respectively. Both had full books for 2022 in their first seasons. Street Sense will also remain at his 2022 fee of $75,000, while Midshipman will see a fee increase to $20,000.

“Optimism abounds currently in the Thoroughbred industry,” said Fox. “The sales are strong, purses are strong, and close to home, we experienced unprecedented demand during the 2022 booking season. With all these positives, only one of our stallions will see a fee increase for 2023 and that's Midshipman, who continues to go from strength to strength in his stud career.”

The Darley roster is rounded out by Nyquist at $55,000, Hard Spun at $35,000, Frosted at $10,000, and Enticed at $5,000.

Retirement plans for GI Forego S. winner and future Darley stallion Cody's Wish (Curlin) will be made after the Breeders' Cup.

Into Mischief’s Extra Anejo Romps To ‘Stardom’ On Debut At Keeneland

EXTRA ANEJO, a $1,350,000 KEESEP purchase bet down to 7-5 for his debut performance, backed up those odds with an impressive romp on debut to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status. After breaking on top, he took steady pressure from a pair of rivals to his outside up the backstretch run. He began to edge clear under his own power into the far turn and showed another gear when asked with a single tap of the crop at the top of the lane to draw off readily. Under a motionless Tyler Gaffalione, Extra Anejo hit the line a geared-down 9 1/2 lengths ahead of a chasing Tshiebwe (Race Day) in second.

Out of a half-sister to MGSP Abingdon (Street Cry {Ire}), Extra Anejo is from the extended female family of MG1SW, GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner, and champion grass mare Islington (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Into Mischief Tops Spendthrift’s 2023 Stud Fees

Into Mischief once again leads Spendthrift Farm's roster for 2023 with his stud fee remaining at $250,000 S&N, the operation announced Thursday.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions including MGISWs Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) and Cyberknife (Gun Runner), who are both pointing for the Breeders' Cup. The other new additions are GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) and GSW Greatest Honour (Tapit), who are both available for inspection at the farm.

Champion Jackie's Warrior, the likely favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint, will command a fee of $50,000 S&N. GI Arkansas Derby and GI Haskell Invitational S. winner Cyberknife's fee will be determined after he runs in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. Mo Donegal, who retired shortly after his Classic victory, will stand for $20,000 S&N. While regally bred Greatest Honour will be at an introductory fee of $7,500 S&N.

“We are extremely excited about the new stallions we are bringing in for 2023. They represent exactly what we hope to do each year, in terms of offering quality and value at all levels of the market,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “Jackie's Warrior is a brilliantly fast champion and one of the most decorated racehorses to come around in recent years. Mo Donegal is a graded winner at two and classic winner at three. Cyberknife won two of the most high-profile Grade Is for 3-year-olds, and Greatest Honour has a rare combination of talent, looks and pedigree that you don't find often at his level of the market. From $50,000 on down to $7,500, all four of these horses were precocious, displayed immense talent, are tremendous physicals, and possess the sire power breeders are looking for.”

Into Mischief's GI Kentucky Derby-winning son and Horse of the Year Authentic will stand for $60,000 S&N for his third season, down $10,000 from last year. Meanwhile Bolt d'Oro will see his fee increase on the back of a strong freshman season, going from $20,000 to $35,000 S&N.

Omaha Beach and Yaupon will remain at $30,000 S&N. Omaha Beach's yearlings have proven quite popular, making him the leader in his class at the recent yearling auctions. Yaupon is standing his second season this year.

Spendthrift's stallions under $20,000 are led by champion Vino Rosso at $15,000 S&N, down from $20,000 last year. MGISW Vekoma and champion Mitole will also stand for $15,000 S&N. Mitole's fee is unchanged from last year and Vekoma is down slightly from $17,500. Goldencents, Known Agenda, Rock Your World and Jimmy Creed will all stand for $10,000 S&N.

Todd Pletcher Joins the TDN Writers’ Room Podcast

Todd Pletcher, this week's Green Group Guest of the Week on the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland, has 12 Breeders' Cup wins, a total that figures to be on the rise next month. Pletcher said he will have at least eight horses running in the Breeders' Cup, a group headed by his dynamic duo of Nest (Curlin) and Malathaat (Curlin) in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, Life Is Good (Into Mischief) in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, Forte (Violence) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Annapolis (War Front) in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile and Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Last but certainly not least, Pletcher will send out Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro) in the GI Juvenile Turf and Happy Saver (Super Saver) in the Classic. He said that Lost Ark (Violence) is a possible starter in the Juvenile.

“At this point, it certainly could be,” Pletcher said when asked if this is the best Breeders' Cup lineup he has ever had. “We couldn't be more pleased with the group that we have.”

Pletcher is particularly strong in ths Distaff where he will likely send out the favorite and the second choice. Both Nest and Malathaat will come into the Breeders' Cup off of wins over the weekend. Nest won the GII Beldame S. and Malathaat won the GI Spinster. Who is better? Pletcher said he doesn't know.

“I truly don't know which one is better,” he said. “I think they're both spectacular fillies. They have so much in common, being by Curlin and out of A.P. Indy mares. They have terrific dispositions and are easy to train. The one difference that we know that maybe not everyone else can see is that Malathaat tends to run to her competition a little bit. She knows when she makes the lead and tends to idle when she does. Nest has that unique ability to cruise and then quicken, like we saw in Alabama, the Coaching Club and the other day in Beldame. She's head and head and then, boom, she's five in front. It will be interesting to see how the race unfolds, how much pace is in there. Malathaat will probably be in a position where she has to come after Nest at some point.”

Overshadowed by Flightline (Tapit), Life Is Good is somewhat flying under the radar when it comes to the Classic. That's partially because his Beyer number dipped to a 97 when he won the GI Woodward S.

“The Woodward was the only two-turn race of the day and it was run on a sloppy track that was changing throughout the day,” Pletcher said. “I honestly don't know if the Beyer figure was correct or not. If you look at ThoroGraph or Ragozin he ran much faster than that. He went the final three-eighths in 36 1/5, which is pretty hard to do no matter what the circumstances are. I think that Law Professor (Constitution) ran the best race of his life to be second and it was another 10 lengths back to Keepmeinmind (Laoban). He didn't win by 19 1/4 lengths like Flightline did, and I think that was the comparison everyone was looking for. But we are running back in five weeks so we wanted to be ready to run and ready to win but also be thoughtful that we had five weeks to go to the Classic.”

Pletcher is hoping that Life Is Good gets the kind of fast track in the Classic that he appears to prefer.

“Life is Good's weapon is his speed, his ability to go fast and keep going,” he said. “What I am looking for is to hopefully get him on a track for the first time in a while that is a really fast track, a true glib surface. The entire meet at Aqueduct the track has been very slow. Prior to that, Saratoga was a very deep, demanding track. In Dubai, we caught a really deep, demanding surface. I am hoping at Keeneland we get a speed-favoring track, one that, for the first time in while, will play to his strengths.”

Elsewhere on the show, panelists Randy Moss, Zoe Cadman and Bill Finley voiced their own opinion on the Nest-versus-Malathaat debate. When asked who is the horse to beat, there were two votes for Nest and one for Malathaat.
