TRF Annual Hay Drive Underway

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) has received a $60,000 matching gift from the Santulli Family Foundation to launch its 2022 Hay Drive. Richard and Peggy Santulli will match every dollar donated to the TRF up to $60,000 for this campaign. The TRF's goal for the 2022 Hay Drive is $120,000 to cover the cost of hay for the nearly 450 former racehorses currently in their care throughout the country.

The TRF Hay Drive is one of the most important campaigns for the organization and will be conducted by direct mail, email and social media as well as personal donation requests. The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2023, is the oldest Thoroughbred rescue in the country.

“With changing economic tides causing a significant impact on the price of hay, it is more important than ever to prepare for the winter ahead,” said Jessica Paquette, TRF Director of Communication and Annual Fund. “We are grateful for the continued support of the Santulli family and from donors, large and small, throughout the country.”

Last year, with the help of the Santulli Family Foundation, the TRF surpassed the goal of $120,000 and the organization is hopeful that this year's response will be equally successful.

“The TRF is steadfast in its commitment to our aging herd and providing quality hay to our horses is an important part of our care plan,” said Patricia Stickney, TRF Executive Director. “This annual drive ensures that we can meet our hay needs throughout the year and we are most grateful to the Santulli Family Foundation for their continued support of this effort and for inspiring others to give as well.”

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Names New Curator, Educator

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY has named Jessica Cloer as Museum Curator and Matt Reichel as Museum Educator. Cloer comes to the Museum with more than a decade of experience working in museums. Since 2013, Cloer has been a registrar at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University, Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Mass., Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., and the Stanley Museum of Art at the University of Iowa.

Reichel worked in the field of education in New York's Capital Region for five years prior to joining the Museum. Upon graduating from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, Reichel taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and at Saratoga Central Catholic and the Saratoga Film Academy.

“Jessica and Matt are great additions to our team at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame,” said Cate Masterson, the Museum's Director. “Both are talented and proven professionals in their respective disciplines and will be tremendous assets to the Museum in their new positions.”

Better Than $1.1M Returned to Bettors Via Penny Breakage

Through the conclusion of racing at Keeneland Sunday Oct. 15, more than $1.1 million has been returned to bettors since the introduction of penny breakage–rounding pari-mutuel winnings to the penny and not the dime–less than two months ago, according to a blog post from the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation (TIF).

TIF was a vocal supporter and champion of the penny breakage provision, the first of its kind in North America as part of broader legislation designed to standardize pari-mutuel taxation.

“The total is even higher than $1.1 million, that is just in the Thoroughbred win, place and show pools” said TIF Executive Director Patrick Cummings. “The breaks from exotic pools and Kentucky's Standardbred races add even more to the total.”

According to the post, in previous times, if an unrounded $1 return for a bet was $5.0918, under the rules of dime breakage, an even $5 would be returned to gamblers. Under the new rules, a winning bettor receives $5.09.

“Based on observations across Kentucky's tracks and discussions with tellers, there has been a short acclimation period for everyone to get used to it,” Cummings added. “But now that customers receive a 'full' dividend, not only is there no going back, but we start looking elsewhere wondering why others are not as progressive as Kentucky.

“It's been seamless for ADW bettors and overall, the feedback TIF has received has been entirely positive.”

The penny breakage provision was included in Kentucky House Bill 607 and was passed by both legislative branches in March before being signed into law the following month.

“The legislative support to accomplish this cannot be understated, led by Representative Adam Koenig in the House and Majority Leader Damon Thayer in the Senate,” Cummings said. “They mustered the backing of a vast majority of their colleagues to be the first in America to right a multi-generational wrong.

“The penny breakage provision was a small part of a much bigger bill and it is paying back horseplayers that bet Kentucky races, enabling them to churn more across the sport.”

The Keeneland-hosted Breeders' Cup Nov. 4 and 5 will include the enhanced payouts for the first time, as will next year's Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

“Other states and tracks should want the same, following Kentucky's lead. But until then, Kentucky pays you more,” said Cummings.

Caravel Skips Clear in Franklin

Caravel, purchased for $500,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale, captured her second graded win for the new connections this year when she sauntered clear to the wire to win the GIII Franklin S. at Keeneland Sunday. Sent off the 2-1 favorite, the gray mare sat settled in a tracking third along the rail behind and opening quarter in :21.40. She charged up four wide into the lane and collared pacesetting second-choiceTwilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}) with a furlong to run before skipping clear late.

“The mare ran a great race,” said winning rider Tyler Gaffalione. “She broke alertly today. I knew [jockey] Johnny [Velazquez's] horse [Twilight Gleaming] was the one to beat, so I worked my way out to get behind her, and coming into the stretch, I attacked her as soon as I could. My horse was game, and she finished the job well.”

Caravel began her career racing in the silks of her breeder and trainer, Elizabeth Merryman, for whom she won four stakes. Bobby Flay joined the ownership line ahead of her first graded score in last summer's GIII Caress S. at Saratoga and the mare moved to the barn of trainer Graham Motion to finish third in the Aug. 22 GI Highlander S., sixth in the Sept. 25 GIII Turf Monster S. and 12th in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Fergus Galvin of Hunter Valley Farm signed the ticket to acquire Caravel for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. Transferred to Brad Cox, she took the Queen S. at Turfway in March in her first start for the new owners. She added wins in the June 10 GIII Intercontinental S. at Belmont Park and Aug. 20 Smart N Fancy S. at Saratoga and was coming off a fourth-place effort in the Sept. 19 GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S.

Asked whether Sunday's win had earned Caravel a return trip to the Breeders' Cup in three weeks, Cox said, “That will ultimately be up to the owners [Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel and Madaket Stables], but we'll talk to them about it. I do know she's in the [Keeneland November Breeding Stock] sale, but there's been some talk about possibly running her next year as well, so who knows? At the end of the day I'm just proud of what she's been able to accomplish, and congratulations to the ownership group. She's a tough filly. She always brings it.”

Caravel is entered in the Keeneland November sale as hip 224.

Caravel is the first foal out of Zeezee Zoomzoom, who is also the dam of multiple stakes winner Witty (Great Notion). The 10-year-old mare produced a colt by Great Notion in 2021 and a filly by Street Boss this year. She is a daughter of multiple stakes winner and multiple graded placed Zee Zee.
