Plainsman Retired to Buck Pond Farm

Plainsman (Flatter–S S Pinafore, by Street Sense), a three-time graded winner and third-place finisher in the 2021 GI Cigar Mile H., has been retired to Buck Pond Farm in Kentucky. He will stand the 2023 season for $5,000.

“He's by Flatter, who has not only been a great sire, but is also the sire of Upstart, who is a leading young sire himself,” Buck Pond's Doug Arnold told TDN. “He had incredible speed. He ran 1:33 and change two different times and he's extremely good looking. He looks like his daddy.”

Bred in Kentucky by Joseph Minor, owned by Shortleaf Stable, Inc. and trained by Brad Cox, the $350,000 KEEESEP yearling retires with a record of 32-9-7-6 and earnings of $1,408,412. Produced by a half-sister to MGSW Southdale (Street Cry {Ire}), Plainsman is a half-brother to GSP Liam (Liam's Map).

Ocala Stud Sets 2023 Stallion Roster

Ocala Stud has set 2023 stud fees for its roster of 10 stallions for the upcoming breeding season, led by GI Santa Anita Derby winner Roadster, who will stand his initial season at stud for $7,500 S&N. Also new to the roster for 2023 is GISW Gretzky the Great, who will stand for $3,000 S&N.

Awesome Slew, Florida's No. 1-ranked First Crop Sire, will once again stand for $4,000 S&N.

Seeking the Soul, a Charles Fipke homebred, will stand for $5,000 S&N. He welcomed first foals in 2022.

Win Win Win, like Seeking the Soul, saw his first foals hit the ground in 2022 and will stand the upcoming breeding season for $5,000 S&N.

Stud fees for Adios Charlie, Jess's Dream, and Noble Bird will be $3,000 S&N, and Dak Attack and Battalion Runner will stand for $2,500 S&N.

Golden Pal to Ashford After Third BC Win Attempt

Dual Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo–Lady Shipman, by Midshipman) will retire to Coolmore America's Ashford Stud after attempting to win his third consecutive Breeders' Cup race next week. The Wesley Ward pupil won the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2021 and the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2020. Owned by the partnership of Westerberg Limited, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Golden Pal will make his final career start in the Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Keeneland before standing alongside his sire at Ashford.

“We've followed Golden Pal's career closely and he's a very welcome addition to our roster,” said Ashford's Dermot Ryan. “He has speed to burn and like many of those by Uncle Mo, he's a very good-looking horse. I don't think any horse has come close to beating him here in the U.S. since he broke his maiden in the Skidmore S. [at two] and Uncle Mo has made a very good start as a sire of sires, so it's all good news!”

In a career spanning three years, Golden Pal is enjoying perhaps his best season yet as he opened the year with a visually impressive 4 3/4-length win in Keeneland's GII Shakertown S. and shipped to England for a rough trip in the G1 Kings Stand S. before returning stateside for back-to-back scores in Saratoga's GIII Troy S. and Keeneland's GII Woodford S., his second consecutive victory in that race. Overall, he's won eight black-type events–seven graded–and placed in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot. His current record stands at 12-8-2-0 with earnings of $1,815,131. All of his wins have come between five and 5 1/2 furlongs.

“This is the fastest of the fast,” said Wesley Ward after the Shakertown. Ward has made no secret about his feeling that Golden Pal is the best he has ever trained.

Tapit Remains at $185,000 for 2023

Tapit's stud fee will remain at $185,000 in 2023, according to a press release from Gainesway Farm Wednesday morning announcing their roster and stud fees for the coming breeding season.

The farm's top stallion is currently the leading active sire in North America by Grade I winners (29), Grade I horses (62), graded stakes winners (96), graded stakes performers (184), stakes winners (154), and stakes performers (299), and he is the all-time leading sire by lifetime progeny earnings ($188,654,112).

The fee is the third-highest announced thus far for 2023, behind Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief at $250,000, and Hill 'n' Dale's Curlin at $225,000.

In 2022, his progeny was led by the unbeaten Flightline, whose dominant victories in the GI Metropolitan H. and GI Pacific Classic S. (G1) have established him as the odds-on favorite for this year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland.

A sire-of-sires, his top sons at stud include Constitution, Tonalist, Tapiture, Essential Quality, Frosted and Gainesway's Tapwrit, whose first foals raced this year, and who was the sire of a `TDN Rising Star' Victory Formation at Keeneland last week. He will stand for $10,000 in 2023.

McKinzie will remain at $30,000 in his third year at stud. His first weanlings will be offered this fall, along with those of GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run, who will again stand for $10,000 in 2023.

Karakontie (Jpn), the sire of this year's GI Del Mar Oaks winner Spendarella, remains at $10,000, as does Raging Bull (Fr), in his second season at stud at Gainesway.

Gainesway will add two new stallions to its roster for the 2023 breeding season, Olympiad and Drain the Clock. The latter will stand for $10,000, while Olympiad's stud fee will be determined after his next anticipated start in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.
