Oscar Performance Filly Romps in the Slop at Churchill

4th-Churchill Downs, $114,370, Msw, 10-30, 2yo, f, 6f, 1:12.08, sy, 10 lengths.
RED CARPET READY (f, 2, Oscar Performance–Wild Silk, by Street Sense) proved to be just that with a splashy debut performance through the Churchill slop Sunday afternoon. Touching 37-1 at the off, the $180,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga purchase hit the ground running from her low draw and outsprinted the well-backed Bo Derek (Speightstown) to lead them through an opening quarter-mile in :21.74 over the rain-affected surface. With that 7-2 chance her shadow around the turn, Red Carpet Ready shrugged her off in upper stretch and kicked away to score by about nine lengths as much the best. Red Carpet Ready is the 13th individual winner from the first crop of her sire (by Kitten's Joy). Red Carpet Ready is out of an unraced daughter of SW Spun Silk (A.P. Indy), the dam of GI Vosburgh S. winner Joking (Distorted Humor), and hails from the family of MGSW/MGISP Fed Biz (Giant's Causeway). Wild Silk is the dam of a yearling full-sister and weanling half-brother to Red Carpet Ready and was most recently covered by Not This Time. Asmussen Trio Tune Up at Keeneland

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen sent out a trio of breezers Sunday morning at Keeneland to their final preparations for next weekend's Breeders' Cup World Championships. GI Classic contender Epicenter (Not This Time) covered a half-mile in an easy :50.80 (23/25); GI Juvenile Fillies-bound Grand Love (Gun Runner) went the same distance in :50.20 (19/25); and streaking GI Distaff hopeful Society (Gun Runner) got the half-mile in :49.60 (12/25).

“Epicenter worked a nice, smooth half-mile,” Asmussen said. “I am extremely pleased with how he is coming into the Classic.”

The six-time Breeders' Cup-winning conditioner added, “The track is in excellent shape, and it was a typical week of work for us. I am extremely happy with who we have and the shape they are in.”

Asmussen is expected to work four more of his Breeders' Cup contenders on Monday.

One other notable Breeders' Cup runner to work Sunday in Lexington was Edgeway (Competitive Edge), who will aim to go one better than she did in last year's GI F/M Sprint and who covered five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.20 (1/14).

“We looked at the weather and made up our minds this morning to work, even though it was coming back in five days,” trainer John Sadler said, alluding to a wet forecast for Sunday into Monday. “She went a minute and change and galloped out in 1:13, and she was well within herself. It was very good–nice and smooth.”

Cloud Computing Firster Opens Stars of Tomorrow Card

1st-Churchill Downs, $122,250, Msw, 10-30, 2yo, 5f, :57.87, sy, 2 3/4 lengths.
TWO EAGLES RIVER (g, 2, Cloud Computing–Majestic Island, by Majestic Warrior) got his career off on the right hoof with a solid debut victory in the Stars of Tomorrow lidlifter Sunday at Churchill Downs. Under a bit of a Mitchell Murrill ride right out of the gate then held a spot at the fence in the slipstream of pacesetting Birthday Munnings (Munnings). The $32,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling turned $220,000 OBS April breezer improved inside on the turn and was tipped out to deliver his challenge in upper stretch. Briefly between rivals a furlong and a half from home, the dark bay took over at the eighth pole, wandered down towards the inside with 100 yards to race and came away to take it by a decisive margin. A claim of foul from Ricardo Santana, Jr. aboard Birthday Munnings alleging interference was ultimately denied and the result was allowed to stand. Two Eagles River, who paid just short of $14 to win, is the ninth winner for his freshman sire (by Maclean's Music). Carrying 3×3 inbreeding to A.P. Indy, Two Eagles River has a weanling half-sister by Goldencents and his dam visited Knicks Go this season. Sales history: $32,000 Ylg '21 FTKJUL; $220,000 2yo '22 OBSAPR. Records Close Out Keeneland’s Fall Meet; Breeders’ Cup Next

Keeneland concluded a record-breaking fall meet Saturday with all-sources handle of $208.9 million, a season record for the Lexington track. The 17-day fall meet ran from Oct. 7-29 with Kentucky racing scheduled to switch over to Churchill Downs Sunday prior to returning to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Nov. 4-5.

The all-sources wagering of $208,907,655 was a 15.41% increase over the 2021 fall meet record of $181,009,626. It was the fourth consecutive season of record handle at the track. The numbers do not include whole-card simulcasting at Keeneland.

“This fall meet embodied everything our founders envisioned for Keeneland–a place where families and friends could gather and enjoy great horse racing–all heightened by anticipation for the Breeders' Cup,” said Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin. “The race meet was special in every way: idyllic weather, terrific racing, and special events like Make-A-Wish Day, Heroes Day, and Teacher Appreciation Day that celebrated many deserving people. We thank everyone involved in making the Fall Meet a success and look forward to the fun continuing as we host the World Championships next weekend.”

On-track wagering for the fall meet totaled $15,351,232, up from last year's $15,162,221 (a 1.25% increase). Fall Stars Saturday (Oct. 8) set records for fall meet single-day all-sources handle ($21,695,896, surpassing the $20,926,640 on the equivalent day in 2021, a previous record) and Pick 5 wagering ($1,431,736, bettering last year's $1,255,080). In addition, a Keeneland record payoff of $72,863.72 for a 10-cent superfecta wager occurred Oct. 20.

All the fall meet leader titles came down to the wire, with all decided on Saturday. Gary and Mary West won their first Keeneland leading owner title with four wins over the 17 days, including the GII Hagyard Fayette S. with West Will Power (Bernardini) on closing day. West Will Power also pushed his trainer, Brad Cox, to the trainer title with 11 total wins. It was Cox's third consecutive fall training title and fourth Keeneland title overall. Todd Pletcher and Wesley Ward tied for second with 10 wins apiece.

Luis Saez nabbed his second Keeneland riding title by winning three races on closing day, including the final race of the meet. He just edged Tyler Gaffalione 21-20. Gaffalione had six stakes wins during the fall meet, one shy of Pat Day's single-season record of seven.

Other highlights of Keeneland's fall meet included:

  • Average daily purses of a record $1,168,120, up 32.66% from $880,511 during the 2021 Fall Meet
  • Average daily all-sources handle of $12,288,686, up from $10,647,625 in 2021 (15.41% increase)
  • Average daily on-track handle of $903,014, up from $891,895 in 2021 (up by 1.25%)
