Figures On Par At Arqana November Yearlings

Arqana staged the second renewal of its November Yearling Sale on Saturday, with figures in line with its 2020 edition held amid the pre-vaccine pandemic. Last year, 215 yearlings were offered and this year it was 207. More were sold this year, 167 compared to 155, allowing the clearance rate to rise to 80.6% from 72%. The aggregate settled at €1,057,500, while the average was €6,332 (down slightly from €6,981) and the median was the same at €5,000.

The top price was €30,000 compared to €57,000 last year, and that amount was paid twice by Guy Petit for the joint top lots: colts by Zelzal (Fr) (lot 100) and Dawn Approach (Ire) (lot 172).

The action continues in Deauville next week with the three-day Arqana Autumn Sale.

Flat Sale Brings Tattersalls Ireland Season To A Close

Tattersalls Ireland concluded its 2021 slate of sales on Saturday with the single-session November Flat Sale of foals, yearlings and mares. From 141-head offered, 82 were sold for €567,000 at a clearance rate of 58%. The average was €6,915, and the median was a record for the sale at €5,500.

Thomond O'Mara, under the Kilronan moniker, signed for the sale's top lot, a €29,000 yearling colt by first-crop sire Tasleet (GB) from Lumville Farm. The colt (lot 1372) is out of the Listed Dragon S. runner-up Ejaazah (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Simon Kerins, chief executive officer of Tattersalls Ireland, said, “We concluded our sales calendar today with the November Flat Sale and it was great to see so many European buyers back on the ground. The gains we achieved across all our sales this year continued apace today with increases across the board. We extend our sincere thanks to every vendor and each purchaser for their support, as well as the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing for their assistance in getting so many overseas buyers on the ground.”

Seven Set For German Finale

In the absence of lone filly Nastaria (GB) (Outstrip {GB}), seven colts will head postward for Sunday's Grosser Preis der Wohnstatte Krefeld Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld, Germany's final pattern race of the year and won last year by subsequent G2 German 2000 Guineas hero Mythico (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}). Holger Renz's Tunnes (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}) went straight to the top of ante-post lists for next term's G1 Deutsches Derby in the aftermath of a three-length victory at Cologne last month and the €38,000 BBAG yearling is a half-brother to MG1SW G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero and G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). His chief rivals include Gestut Ebbesloh's unbeaten winner of two Georgios (Ger) (Poet's Voice {GB}), who comes back off a win in Baden-Baden's €200,000 Ferdinand Leisten-Memorial, and Gestut Rottgen's Dusseldorf maiden scorer Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}), who will head postward coming back off a second in Dusseldorf's Listed Junioren-Preis and a fourth in last month's G3 Presis des Winterfavoriten at Cologne. Gestut Ittlingen's Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) ran fifth in the Junioren-Preis and followed up with a comfortable maiden score, defeating Jaber Abdullah's Andreas Wohler trainee Maraseem (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}), at Baden-Baden last month. The other contenders are Gestut Auenquelle's once-raced Dapango (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), who shed maiden status by four lengths at Hoppegarten on Arc day, and Eckhard Sauren's Hannover maiden winner Magical Beat (Ger) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

Group 1 Winner Rougir Added To Arqana December

Haras de la Gousserie's G1 Prix de l'Opera winner Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) is one of three wild cards to have been added to Arqana's Breeding Stock Sale in December, along with Eudaimonia (Fr) (Vision d'Etat {Fr}), who was third in the same race.

Winner of the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and placed in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at two, Rougir progressed this season to take fifth in the G1 Prix de Diane, finishing just a length and a half behind the winner Joan Of Arc (Ire). She was then just half a length off the same filly when finishing fourth in the G1 Prix de Rothschild in August before claiming her own top-level spoils in Paris on Arc weekend.

Out of the Elusive City mare Summer Moon (Fr), Rougir was a €55,000 graduate of Arqana's August Yearling Sale and will be offered in December though Sumbe as lot 160.

Joining her in Deauville is her erstwhile Prix de l'Opera rival, the third-placed Eudaimonia, who was subsequently runner-up in the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio last weekend. The 6-year-old is the winner of five races and was also placed in last season's G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris for trainer Edouard Monfort and owners Rebecca Philipps and John Hammond.

Eudaimonia, who is catalogued as lot 200, is the third of the wildcards to sell on the opening day of the sale and will be preceded by Persona Grata (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) as lot 170. The 10-year-old broodmare was bred by Kirsten Rausing and was a dual listed winner in France before being sold to Eric Puerari, whose Haras des Capucines is consigning the mare in foal to Night Of Thunder (Ire).

Persona Grata's first foal, the 3-year-old Lovely Esteem (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), is a winner and Group 2-placed in Ireland, and the pedigree has also received a boost from afar as Persona Grata's half-sister Kesara (GB) (Sadler's Wells) is the dam of Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}), a multiple Group 1 winner in Australia this year.

The Arqana Breeding Stock Sale begins on Saturday, Dec. 4 and runs for four days.
