Byrne Named BHA Head of Racing and Betting

Tom Byrne has been appointed head of racing and betting for the British Horseracing Authority, a revised role that replaces head of racing and racecourses. That position was previously held by Paul Johnson, who commences his role as chief executive of the National Trainers Federation in January.

Byrne joins the BHA after four years with the Horserace Betting Levy Board as operations manager. He previously held roles with GBI Racing and Racing Post. He will begin in the role in February and oversee the management and development of the BHA's racing department including production and development of the fixture list and race programme and will liaise with the betting industry to support the growth of betting on British racing.

Richard Wayman, the BHA's chief operating officer, said, “This was a very competitive recruitment process, and Tom was appointed from an impressive field of candidates. Tom is a great addition to the BHA team. As part of his role at HBLB, he has been heavily involved in matters relating to the fixture list and race programme, and their funding. As a result, he has a deep understanding of these areas as well as also having strong relationships with many of racing's stakeholders, with whom he will continue to work closely. As well as looking to continue to develop the fixture list and race programme to ensure that our horses have the opportunities to fulfil their potential, we want to ensure that racing can grow its appeal to customers and investors. Tom's good relationships with the betting industry will also be an asset, with betting liaison now forming an important part of the job. I'm delighted to welcome Tom to the BHA and look forward to working with him.”

Byrne added, “To join the BHA as part of the experienced and talented racing team is an opportunity and challenge that I am thrilled to have been offered. I am passionate about British racing and look forward to working with my new colleagues and stakeholders across the sport to deliver an environment which produces the competitive and compelling horseracing that is so crucial for our long-term growth and sustainability. It has been an honour to work for the Levy Board and I would like to thank Alan Delmonte and the HBLB team for all their support, encouragement and guidance. I'm pleased we will continue to work closely together in my new role.”

Owen, Dascombe Part Ways

Trainer Tom Dascombe will leave Michael Owen's Manor House Stables after a 12-year stint.

Dascombe's greatest success during his Manor House tenure came when winning the G1 Irish St Leger with Brown Panther (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), the popular stayer raced by Owen and Andrew Black whose numerous group wins also included the G2 Goodwood Cup and G2 Dubai Gold Cup and placings in the G1 St Leger and G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. On the opposite end of the distance spectrum, Dascombe trained Angel Alexander (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) to win the Ayr Gold Cup, and Kachy (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), a group-winning sprinter who placed behind the likes of Blue Point (Ire), Battaash (GB) and Quiet Reflection (GB).

Owen said in a statement, “After more than 12 years as trainer, Tom Dascombe will be leaving Manor House Stables in the new year. We have shared many great times and races together and created memories that will last a lifetime. I would like to place on record my own personal thanks for all his hard work and support over the years. We part on great terms and everyone at MHS will miss him and wishes him the very best for the future.”

“Colin Gorman and the rest of the MHS team will naturally oversee things once Tom departs and it will be very much business as usual until we appoint Tom's replacement,” Owen added.

Charlie Johnston To Join Father Mark On License

From Jan. 1, Charlie Johnston will join his father Mark Johnston, Britain's winning-most trainer in history, on a joint license at Kingsley Park in Middleham. The news was first reported by Thoroughbred Racing Commentary.

“I feel that there should be recognition of that,” said Mark Johnston of his son's pivotal role at the stable. “He has been doing that work for the past three years. But also the time has come for Charlie to share the responsibility as well. He has passed all his modules at the BHA, and his application has been approved.”

Charlie Johnston told Racing Post that the change was part of a plan that will see him eventually fully take over at Kingsley Park.

“We often like to have a five to ten-year plan in our business and the goal of me having the sole licence has been in the back of our minds for quite some time,” he said. “It's what I've always been working towards, and when they introduced training partnerships it offered us an obvious route to get from A to B. It seemed a good opportunity to do it rather than make abrupt an change.

“I'm in a very fortunate position to draw on dad's 30 years and 4,800 plus winners of experience, but at the same time have some youth and drive to push the string onwards and upwards on to greater heights.”
