Do Deuce Earns Asahi Hai Spoils

Five unbeaten 2-year-old colts lined up in Sunday's championship-crowning G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. at Hanshin, and it was the third betting choice Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) who emerged with his perfect record intact while handing legendary jockey Yutaka Take his first win in the race.

In a pattern that would be unusual in most other major racing nations, Do Deuce made his first two starts over nine furlongs before dropping back to eight for his first Group 1 assignment. He won both his prior starts by a neck: a maiden race on Sept. 5 and Tokyo's Listed Ivy S. on Oct. 23.

Traveling midpack and wide on Sunday as the race favourite Serifos (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) sat closer to the pace while racing keenly, Do Deuce found himself in the middle of the track when they straightened for home. After being slightly hampered by a rival, Do Deuce regrouped to rally on the heels of Serifos. Always looking like he was traveling better than that rival despite switching back to his wrong lead two furlongs from home, Do Deuce overhauled a stubborn Serifos inside the final half-furlong to score by a half-length under mild coaxing.

“Do Deuce is an honest colt,” said Take, who was winning his 78th JRA Group 1 and his first since 2019. “We were able to run in a good position and in good rhythm while observing the others. He responded well going into the straight and although the favorite was stubborn and hard to beat, he dug in remarkably all the way to the line. He's getting stronger by every race—we can look forward to the spring classics next year.”

Take, Japan's most popular and best-known jockey internationally, now just needs to win the G1 Hopeful S. for 2-year-olds to have won all 24 JRA Group 1s. That race takes place next week.

Pedigree Notes
Do Deuce is the 11th Group 1 winner for his sire Heart's Cry and the fifth out of a Vindication mare. His dam, Dust And Diamonds, won the GII Gallant Bloom S. and GIII Sugar Swirl S. and was second in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in 2012. She produced three foals in the U.S., headed by the listed-winning and multiple graded placed Much Better (Pioneerof the Nile) before being purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $1-million, in foal to Pioneerof the Nile, at Keeneland November in 2016. Her first three foals in Japan are all winners, with Do Deuce the lone black-type winner among them.

Unbeaten Serifos Tries for Group 1 Glory

Undefeated Serifos (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), coming off a last out win in the G2 Daily Hai Nisai S. Nov. 13, will try to give trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida his second consecutive victory in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. at Hanshin Sunday. Leading the trainers' table this year, Nakauchida won the race last year with Grenadier Guards (Jpn). A debut winner at Chukyo last June, the chestnut returned to score in the G2 Niigata Nisai S. in August.  Visiting jockey Christian Demuro will be on board.

Also undefeated, Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) kicked off with a first-out win at Tokyo in June before exhibiting late speed to take the G2 Sapporo Nisai S. by four lengths in September. Returned from a pre-training farm to Miho Training Centre in November, he worked six furlongs over woodchip course at Miho Dec. 15, completing the final furlong :11.9.

Yu Ota, assistant to Tetsuya Kimura said, “He ran well in the Sapporo Nisai S., even though he was a bit too relaxed. Returning from the farm recently, he looks sharp, and the jockey reports the horse to be in good shape in training. With two wins over 1,800 meters, there shouldn't be any problem over a mile.”

Geoglyph will be accompanied by Christophe Lemaire, who has ridden the colt in both prior starts.

Looking for his first group title, Danon Scorpion (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) graduated at Hanshin in June before adding that track's Listed Hagi S. (1800m) in October. Trainer Takayuki Yasuda explained, “He is a very talented horse. He also has lots of scope.”

In a recent work over the woodchip course at Ritto Training Centre, the bay covered six furlongs, with the final furlong completed in :12.1 seconds under jockey Kohei Matsuyama.

“He moved better than last week. He showed great acceleration and he is fit going into the race,” said Matsuyama.

Mogul Joins Coolmore National Hunt Roster

Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}-Shastye {Ire}, by Danehill), winner of the G2 KPMG Champions Juvenile S. at two and the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Hong Kong Vase at three, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at The Beeches Stud in 2022 under the Coolmore National Hunt banner. He will stand for €4,000.

Among those that Mogul beat in his top-level wins were the G1 Deutsches Derby scorer and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up In Swoop (Ger), who he will stand alongside at The Beeches; G1 Epsom Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Hong Kong Horse of the Year Exultant (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). A 3.4-million gns yearling, Mogul is out of Newsells Park Stud's excellent producer Shastye and is a full-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Japan (GB)-who goes to stud next year at Gestut Etzean-and the Group 2-winning and multiple Classic-placed Secret Gesture (GB).

“As you'd expect of a horse who cost 3.4-million gns as a yearling, Mogul is a very-impressive looking individual with a great walk and an outstanding pedigree,” said Robert McCarthy. “His dam has produced five black-type horses and there are six Group 1 winners under his first two dams. And of course, like Frankel, he's bred on that great Galileo/Danehill cross. We are very excited to have himself, In Swoop and Santiago all joining the Coolmore roster for 2022.”

Jackson Named National Stud Nominations Manager

Jamie Jackson has been appointed nominations manager for The National Stud.

Jackson gained work experience at Whitsbury Manor Stud and New England Stud before joining the BHA graduate programme, during which he was placed at the National Stud for eight weeks, after which he stayed on. Jackson takes over from Joe Callan, who remains within The Jockey Club has interim general manager of Market Rasen Racecourse.

The National Stud's Stud Director Tim Lane said, “Jamie came to us in July 2019 and showed real potential and determination. He has been a brilliant asset to the team and has grown and progressed exceptionally over the last two years. He has built a good client-base here and has been a huge part of the progress the stud has made”

Jackson added, “It's a really exciting time here at the stud, and I am very lucky to be in the position I'm in. Having seen Time Test and Aclaim foals through the summer and in the sales ring when I first started, to now being successful racehorses, has been amazing. The stallion roster is at its highest standard it has been for quite some time, and Tim and I [and co] hope to further evolve it over the coming years.

“Personally, I am very excited to launch Lope Y Fernandez for the 2022 breeding season. He is a hugely exciting horse to be the only son of Lope De Vega standing in England. Also, I feel very lucky to be working alongside Ed Harper, who helped kick-start my career at Whitsbury Manor Stud.”
