Manobo Stays Unbeaten In Style At Meydan

Godolphin's Manobo (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) stamped himself a stayer for the future with a victory in the G2 Prix Chaudenay at ParisLongchamp in October, and the progressive 4-year-old reaffirmed that position with a stirring 5 1/2-length victory on seasonal return in Friday's G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan to remain unbeaten in five starts.

Making his debut at Newbury last May, Manobo headed Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) just two weeks before that one went on to finish second to Adayar (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Derby. Manobo took a more conservative route, plundering a Kempton novice race before venturing to France to take the Listed Prix Turenne by 10 lengths prior to his Chaudenay run.

Manobo hit the finish line first time around on Friday a half-length to the good in a race where no one was keen to take up the running, but by the time they raced into the first bend he had taken a lead from Taqareer (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) despite giving a few shakes of his head as William Buick attempted to restrain him. Settling into a rhythm down the backstretch as Taqareer stole a wide early advantage, Manobo began to effortlessly cut into that lead rounding the final turn. Arriving at Taqareer's shoulder as they straightened, Manobo surged into the lead when given a shake of the reins and was never threatened thereafter, winning by an eased-down 5 1/2 lengths from Ian Williams's East Asia (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). Trainer Charlie Appleby noted post-race that the G2 Dubai Gold Cup was the likely target for Manobo on the Dubai World Cup card on Mar. 26, but that he could deputise for Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in the event that anything were to go amiss with his GI Breeders' Cup Turf-winning stablemate in the ensuing weeks.

Pedigree Notes

Manobo is the second living foal and first stakes winner out of Tasaday (Nayef), who won three times at the group level and was twice Group 1 placed in France for Andre Fabre before joining Saeed bin Suroor and winning listed stakes at Meydan and York, and finishing third in the 2014 G1 Yorkshire Oaks. Her first foal was Turgenev (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who finished second in the G2 Celebration Mile. Tasaday, who is out of the dual Group 3-winning Tashelka (Fr) (Mujahid) and a half-sister to the G3 Desmond S. winner Tribal Beat (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}), has an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old colt by New Approach (Ire). It is also the family of South Africa's champion older horse Whisky Baron (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}).

Shahama Makes The Grade In UAE Oaks

It was not a completely straight-forward task for 'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings), but in the end, her considerable class and talent won out as she ran her record to a perfect four-from-four with a deceptively easy victory in Friday's G3 UAE Oaks at Meydan.

Off to an awkward beginning, Shahama was clearly last under the wire the first time around and appeared to be climbing badly into the kickback as Adrie de Vries urged her along. Able to tack onto the back of the pack with 1400 metres to travel, the May 9 foal was guided out into about the four path as the field reached the halfway point. Four wide at the three-eighths peg, Shahama began to catch the eye and loomed at the top of the straight to make a line of three. Tenderly ridden by de Vries, she was asked to accelerate a bit 300 metres from home and was always holding Arabian Gazelles (Mastery), who gave game chase. Minwah (Cupid) completed a US-bred sweep.

“She was very upset today because of the screen, the music, [the start being in] the straight,” the winning jockey said. “She jumped a bit awkward because she was sitting down in the gate. It was a little bit awkward,` as there were a few horses who couldn't bring me to the leader, so I had to go wide to get her out of the kickback, but she did it very easy.”

Pedigree Notes:

Trainer Fawzi Nass's name appeared on the docket when Shahama–a May 9 foal–was hammered down for $425,000 at last year's OBS April Sale after breezing a quarter-mile in :21 flat. From the same Gone West sire line as the talented multiple graded-stakes winning Kensei and a half to dual Eclipse Award winner Lookin At Lucky, Shahama is out of a daughter of the stakes-winning Regal Feeling, whose Grade III-winning daughter Grand Charmer (Lord Avie) was responsible for GSP juvenile filly True Feelings (Latent Heat). Regal Feeling is also responsible for Flirtatious (A.P. Indy), the dam of champion Wait A While (Maria's Mon). The now 23-year-old Private Feeling is represented by a yearling colt by Catalina Cruiser and is due to Smart Strike's Grade I-winning son Tom's d'Etat this year. Shahama is the 24th graded/group winner for Munnings.

Farrell Joins Tattersalls Ireland

Christopher Farrell, who spent the last three years as bloodstock consultant at Magic Millions, has been appointed to the new role of Flat Sales Executive at Tattersalls Ireland. Farrell, a graduate of University College Dublin and Godolphin Flying Start, will focus on developing the firm's flat sales portfolio and attracting new and existing vendors and buyers to sales at Fairyhouse. His role will have an emphasis on improving the quality of offerings at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale, September Yearling Sale and November Flat Breeding Stock Sale.

From Co. Laois, Farrell has also spent time at Paca Paca Farm in Japan and with Equilume as a sales and marketing executive, which took him to Kentucky, California and Australia.

“Christopher is a superb addition to the Tattersalls Ireland team and will perfectly complement our existing bloodstock personnel and international agents with whom he will work closely,” said Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Simon Kerins. “His wide-ranging experience of the international racing and bloodstock industry, together with an exemplary record on the Godolphin Flying Start program and time spent at Magic Millions, makes him the ideal fit for this exciting new position. Christopher has proven success in sourcing top quality sales horses for Magic Millions and a strong background in customer relations which will only enhance the Tattersalls Ireland service to our loyal vendors.”

Farrell added, “I am very excited to take on the new role of Flat Sales Executive at Tattersalls Ireland and I look forward to helping build on the company's impressive progress across their Flat sales portfolio. This is an exciting time to be joining a company with such an illustrious history following the record-breaking sessions at both the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale and September Yearling Sale last year. Tattersalls Ireland is led by a forward-thinking team that seeks to provide the best possible service to its valued clients, so it is with great enthusiasm that I take on this new role.”
