Costa Appointed New Trainer at Jebel Ali Stables in Dubai

Australian trainer Michael Costa has been appointed as His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's trainer at Jebel Ali Stables in Dubai. The contract was signed in the emirate on Friday. Costa, who runs Michael Costa Racing, will continue to operate his stable in Australia for the majority of the 2021/2022 season and, after all of his horses and staff have been placed with new trainers and positions, will move to Dubai and take up his new role. The horseman will oversee sourcing a large band of racing talent every year. The best-known horse to race in Sheikh Ahmed's colours is the globetrotting multiple Group 1 winner Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who has earned Group 1 wins in both hemispheres.

Costa released a statement via Michael Costa Racing's YouTube channel which read in part: “I went over with an objective mindset, but I was absolutely blown away by the facility, the horses and the people. The opportunity that was presented was far bigger than I could have ever anticipated. The facility itself is world class and I can't image there being a better facility and training establishment in the world.

“What the job entails is to take up the training operation and purchasing a large bloodstock band every year, as well as travelling the Carnival horses all around the world to compete at the highest level. After viewing the operation and meeting the lovely team at Jebel Ali, I had some hard conversations with my wife and family on what has been the hardest decision of my life. I've decided to take up the position of the head role for Jebel Ali and for His Highness Sheikh Ahmed.

“I'm extremely grateful for all of our owner support, growing a stable with one of the best strike rates in the country. This could only be done with the support of all of our owners. I'd also like to thank all of my staff who've shared this journey with me.”

Dascombe Relocating to Uplands in Lambourn

Trainer Tom Dascombe, who will leave Michael Owen's Manor House Stables after Owens announced the split last December, will move to Uplands in Lambourn starting in April. His final runner out of Manor House Stables will be Misty Grey (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who is running at Wolverhampton in the Listed Lady Wulfruna S. on Mar. 12.

“Misty Grey will be my last runner from Manor House and I will be returning to Lambourn from Apr. 1 after signing an agreement at Uplands,” said Dascombe, who trained 2014 G1 Irish St. Leger hero Brown Panther (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}) for Owens. “I'm 100% better as of yesterday. It has been incredibly difficult finding somewhere, looking all over the place, looking at yards. I must be honest, not just in this country.

“But I always had it in my mind that I wanted to go back to Lambourn and I'm really thrilled for the Jockey Club Estates, because it is impossible finding a yard in Lambourn.

“But I have been patient and it coincides with my last runner from the yard and I've really not wanted to say anything until now. I'm delighted that the last day of the job, I've actually got something to say. That's a positive.

“I must thank my new landlords at Uplands, Amber Varcoe and Dominic Hoult, for their support and a mutual desire to see this great yard among the winners and I am very much looking forward to a new chapter in my career.

“But I enjoyed my 12 years at Manor House Stables. We shared Classic success and plenty of winners, and it would be nice to think Misty Grey can end this chapter of my career on a high.

“I'm hugely grateful to Michael Owen and Andrew Black [the ex-footballer's business partner] for affording me the opportunity to develop the stable effectively from scratch to a thriving operation and we are proud of what we have achieved.

“We've shared memories that will be impossible to erase and I'll forever take great pride in training Michael's homebred Brown Panther to Classic and Royal Ascot victory. We have shared some great times and now I'm looking forward to having a few more at Uplands.”

Dascombe added, “At the time, it did come as a shock, but Michael and Andrew Black wanted to go in a different direction and that is their prerogative. I will always be truly grateful for the chance and for the good times we shared.

“I am just excited to get started again in Lambourn. How many horses will we have? The simple is answer is I have no idea.

“I wanted to sign on a yard with 106 stables, but have ended up signing on with a yard that has 20 available stables. Day one, I will have just empty stables. Day two, I want to have a few more than that. But, I'm thrilled that I am back in Lambourn and looking forward to the future.”

Real World Still Possible For World Cup

Although he beat just three home in the G1 Saudi Cup a fortnight ago, trainer Saeed bin Suroor said Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) could still stay on the dirt for the G1 Dubai World Cup on Mar. 26.

Godolphin's 5-year-old came alive in Britain last summer, winning the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot followed by three straight black-type races culminating in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein in October, and he kicked off his campaign with victory in the G2 Zabeel Mile at Meydan on Jan. 28. Real World ran on the dirt four times during last year's carnival and while he didn't win, he was placed three times, and bin Suroor said his Saudi Cup performance wasn't about an inability to handle dirt.

“He missed the break and from the start it did not look like he was going to win,” the trainer said. “That was clear to me and everyone else who saw it. He has come back after the race very good and he has exercised well. He is happy and healthy.

“He looks good, we will keep options open for him now. He will either go to the Dubai World Cup or the [G1] Dubai Turf, the nine-furlong race. I think we will make that decision a week before the race. I have to talk to Sheikh Mohammed about that.

Bin Suroor's Storm Damage (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) was the winner of the only non black-type race on Meydan's Super Saturday card last weekend, and the 4-year-old gelding looks ready to step up to pattern level.

“He is a nice horse,” said bin Suroor. “Last time Frankie [Dettori] rode him, he won over seven furlongs at Meydan on Super Saturday. He is a horse who could go over sprint trips or over a mile and could go for the Dubai Turf. The options are open for him.”
