Dubawi 13/8 Favourite To Be Champion Sire

The bookmaker Fitzdares makes Dubawi (Ire) 13/8 favourite to be champion sire for the first time. Darley's 20-year-old elite sire was third in last year's table in Britain and Ireland behind Frankel (GB) and Galileo (Ire), and he enjoyed an annus mirabilis on the international stage, becoming the first stallion to be responsible for three Grade I winners at the same Breeders' Cup meeting in Yibir (GB), Space Blues (Ire) and Modern Games (Ire).

Juddmonte's reigning champion Frankel is second-favourite to retain his title at 15/8, with the 12-time champion Galileo (Ire), who died last year, at 14/1 and his half-brother and fellow Derby winner Sea The Stars (Ire) priced at 11/4. Kingman (GB), whose eldest runners are now six, was seventh in last year's championship and is 14/1 to take this year's title.

“I think the first thing that was obvious was the lack of older horses in the Aidan O'Brien yard this year and this was a big factor in the price of Galileo,” said Fitzdares' Sam Hockenhull.

“Splitting up the other three was much harder. They all look like they have a potential superstar or superstars that could propel them to the title. However, it was Dubawi who came out on top. The quantity of proven top-class performers running this year is incredible and he looks to hold a very strong hand in the 3-year-old colt department this year.”

Hockenhull added, “We couldn't put Frankel far behind. After what he did last year, we definitely feel he will be popular in this market. His two Derby winners both remain in training and with his 1000 Guineas favourite Inspiral, it looks set to be another big year for him.

“Last but not least was Sea The Stars, who in Baaeed may have the best miler since Frankel himself. He will almost certainly have a very strong hand in the staying division with the likes of Mojo Star and Manobo joining Stradivarius.”

The betting for this year's champion sire in Great Britain and Ireland on total prize-money is as follows:

Dubawi 13/8
Frankel 15/8
Sea the Stars 11/4
Galileo 14/1
Kingman 14/1

Cazoo Oaks Attracts 46 Entries

A total of 46 3-year-old fillies have been entered in the G1 Cazoo Oaks and 20 horses have stood their ground for the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs on June 3. Two dozen fillies represent the home team, and John and Thady Gosden train the 2021 Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) for Cheveley Park Stud. She sports three black-type wins including the G1 Fillies' Mile on Oct. 8. G3 Flame of Tara S. victress Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was unplaced in that affair for Zhang Yuesheng and the Jessica Harrington yard.

Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) captured the G3 Prestige S. at Goodwood on Aug. 28 for Qatar Racing and James Ferguson. Fourth in the Fillies' Mile, she went on to compete in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 5. Kirsten Rausing's Kawida (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) gave trainer Ed Walker a score in the Listed Montrose S. at Newmarket on Oct. 30, defeating Godolphin's With The Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in third.

Also entered is Her Majesty The Queen's Perfect Alibi (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) from the yard of William Haggas. If successful, the unraced filly would be the third Oaks heroine for The Queen, who won the Oaks with Carrozza (GB) (Dante {GB}) in 1957 and Dunfermline (GB) (Royal Palace {GB}) in 1977. The latter succeeded during the year of Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee. The June 4 G1 Cazoo Derby will form part of the official celebrations for the upcoming Platinum Jubilee.

The Irish challenge is very strong in 2022, with 21 entered at this stage, led by 14 from the Coolmore partners/Aidan O'Brien camp. G3 Weld Park S. victress Concert Hall (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) holds an entry, as does Only (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}, the daughter of dual Classic heroine Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Another member of the Irish contingent is the listed-placed Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the colours of Teme Valley from Joseph O'Brien's stable.

Juddmonte's undefeated filly Agave (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the G3 Prix Penelope on Apr. 2, has been entered as the only French-trained representative for Andre Fabre in the fillies' Classic.

Godolphin's 2021 G1 Cazoo Derby hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) anchors the Coronation, alongside his Charlie Appleby stablemate and fellow Classic winner Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Appleby is also considering the Epsom Downs contest for GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Other Group 1 winners nominated at this point are: Ali Saeed's Teona (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}); Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) for Joseph O'Brien in the silks of Teme Valley; the La Pyle Partnership's Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) from the yard of William Muir and Chris Grassick; Shadwell's Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) for Roger Varian; and Sir Mark Prescott is represented by three-time German Group 1 winner Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) for Kirsten Rausing.

Happy Romance Eyeing The Duke Of York S.

Fresh off running second in the Mar. 26 G1 Al Quoz Sprint over the Meydan turf in Dubai, Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})'s connections are considering a start in the G2 Duke Of York S. on May 11 for the 4-year-old filly. The McMurray Family colourbearer won the G3 Hackwood S. last July and ran fourth in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. on Sept. 4. She tired to 11th in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. on Oct. 16 and was third in the G3 1351 Turf Sprint in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 26.

“Happy Romance ran a lovely race in Dubai. I was very happy,” said trainer Richard Hannon. “It was just a shame she was not drawn closer to the rail, as it seemed they had a bit of an advantage over there, but we were delighted with her.

“I put her in the Duke of York the other day, but I have put her in the two races at Ascot, the five and the six [G1 King's Stand S. and G1 Platinum Jubilee S.], and we will work back from there, really.

“She will have a run beforehand, there is that one at York perhaps–there are options–but she will have a little break now and keep her ticking over.”

Group winner Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has exited his victory in the Listed Doncaster Mile in good order. Hannon is mulling either the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury on May 14 or the G3 bet365 Mile on Apr. 22 for the 4-year-old colt.

He added “Chindit has options. There is the Lockinge or that race at Sandown [the Group Two bet365 Mile] as well, so that is probably the next stop–one of those two, probably.

“I don't want to run him on soft ground, though.”
