Geoglyph Leaves Mark in Satsuki Sho

Sunday Racing's Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) closed from off the pace to annex Sunday's G1 Satsuki Sho, the first leg in Japan's Triple Crown. The victory marked the first win top-level win for both Geoglyph and his trainer, Tetsuya Kimura.

Ask Victor More (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) soon went to the front as Geoglyph–in tandem with Danon Beluga (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn})–traveled on the heels of stablemate Equinox (Jpn) (Kitisan Black {Jpn}) mid-pack. Fanned out a few paths wide turning for home, the colt battled for supremacy with the early pacesetter in the final furlong, dug in to overtake his stablemate, gaining a short advantage late en route to a one-length success over Equinox with favored Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn), last season's champion juvenile in Japan, 1 1/4-lengths back in third.

“His start was good and we were able to sit in an ideal position which was crucial in winning today,” said winning rider Yuichi Fukunaga, who also won the Japanese 2000 Guineas with Contrail (Jpn) in 2020. “I already knew that he was in good form when I rode him during workouts and had every belief that, although the colt was fifth pick, he was capable of winning. The colt has the strength to sustain his speed, so I geared him wide launching an early bid before the fourth corner. I'm just glad I was able to do my job. In the upcoming Derby, we'll have to see if he can handle the 400-meter added distance.”

After debuting in June last year, Geoglyph notched two consecutive wins including the G3 Sapporo Nisai S. and capped off his 2-year-old season with a fifth in the G1 Asahi Hai

Futurity S. in December. In his sole prior start this term, he finished runner-up behind Danon Beluga in the G3 Kyodo News Hai Feb. 13.

Pedigree Notes:
Sunday's Classic victory marked the first Group 1 score for U.S. Sprint Champion Drefong, winner of a trio of Grade I races, including the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. Geoglyph represents the Japanese-based stallion's first crop of sophomores.

Geoglyph's dam, listed scorer and multiple Group 1-placed Aromatico, is also responsible for a pair of minor winners–Albilia (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) and Copacati (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}).

Intello’s Junko Battles To Prix Noailles Success

Alain and Gerard Wertheimer's homebred 3-year-old gelding Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who went untested as a juvenile, followed up an impressive score in his Feb. 24 debut at Chantilly with an equally taking triumph back at that track last month and continued on an upward trajectory by notching a career high on black-type bow in Sunday's G3 Prix Noailles at ParisLongchamp. Under restraint in a close-up second until scrubbed along off the home turn, the 17-10 favourite locked horns with the pacesetting Maximus (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) passing the quarter-mile marker and would not be denied under a late drive to deny that tenacious rival by a neck.

Junko is the third foal and scorer produced by GIII Regret S. and GIII Edgewood S. placegetter Lady Zuzu (Dynaformer), herself a half-sister to MGSW GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and GI Woodford Reserve Manhattan H. runner-up Optimizer (English Channel) and to the dam of stakes-winning GI Belmont Derby Invitational third Cellist (Big Blue Kitten). The April foaled-homebred bay is kin to a 2-year-old colt by Frankel (GB) and a weanling colt by Siyouni (Fr).

Raclette Eclipsed As Rosacea Pounces For Prix de la Grotte Success

Haras de la Perelle's homebred 3-year-old filly Rosacea (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) concluded her four-race juvenile campaign with victory in October's G3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville and dented a collection of lofty reputations with a last-gasp effort in Sunday's G3 Prix de la Grotte over one mile at ParisLongchamp. Patiently ridden and trailing all eight rivals into the straight, the 9-1 chance was angled to the outside with 300 metres remaining and the Stephane Wattel trainee quickened smartly under mild urging in the closing stages to nail Daisy Maisy (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by a half length in the shadows of the post. The hitherto undefeated Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), making her first start for Mikel Delzangles, finished 1 1/4 lengths away in third while 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) failed to fire from off the pace and ran eighth of nine.

Rosacea, half-sister to a 2-year-old filly by Tamayuz (GB), is the third of four foals and lone scorer produced by a winning half-sister to GI E.P. Taylor S. heroine Reggane (GB) (Red Ransom). The February-foaled homebred bay's second dam Reine Zao (Fr) (Alzao), who ran third in the G3 Prix de Psyche, is a daughter of G1 Prix de Diane third and GI Gamely H. fourth Raintree Renegade (Green Forest).
