Lope de Vega Filly On Top In The Cleopatre

Off the mark over nine furlongs at Fontainebleau Apr. 12, Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud's Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) came through her first major test in style to annexe Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Bred to appreciate at least this 10 1/2-furlong trip, being out of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris winner Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), the Andre Fabre trainee was held up in last early in contrast to her last outing when she was sent forward from the break. Nudged along by Mickael Barzalona to close at the top of the straight, the 23-10 favourite was produced wide to overhaul Samahram (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) and Kawida (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) with 100 metres remaining and beat that duo by 3/4 of a length and a head respectively.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, representing Al Shaqab in France, said, “When she won last time at Fontainebleau she jumped the pedestrian path after the finish line, unseated Mickael Barzalona and was knocked by the filly behind her that fell–it was a scary moment and she was given a few days off to recover,” he explained. “Lately, she was fine at home and pleasing in her work and she confirmed that today in good style. She was perfectly relaxed behind and she quickened brilliantly, so we have to be delighted. She is in both group 1s, the [May 29] Saint Alary [at Parislongchamp] and the Diane [at Chantilly June 19], and Andre Fabre will make the call.”

Place du Carrousel, who was a €260,000 purchase by Mandore International Agency at the 2020 Arqana Deauville Select Sale, is the first foal out of the aforementioned Traffic Jam who was also second in the G2 Prix de Pomone and is a half to the dam of the Australian group 3-placed Last Sight (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}). Her family features the G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Winged Cupid (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. heroine Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), which links her to Galileo's Minding (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire) and Sunday's G1 1000 Guineas hopeful Tuesday (Ire). The dam has the 2-year-old filly Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a filly foal by Sea the Stars (Ire).

Showcasing’s Dramatised A New TDN Rising Star

Clipper Logistics' 2-year-old filly Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) went postward as the 9-4 favourite for Friday's My Odds Boost On Betfair British EBF Maiden Fillies' S. at Newmarket and dominated the five-furlong dash with an explosive performance to earn TDN Rising Stardom. The April-foaled bay tanked forward from the break to seize control after the initial strides. Last to come off the bridle inside the two pole, she was not for catching once shaken up at the foot of the hill and powered clear inside the final furlong to prevail by an impressive four lengths from Malrescia (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

“She's been showing plenty at home and the 2-year-olds have set off really well,” said trainer Karl Burke. “She'd be the head of the pile of the fillies that have been winning, so we knew we had a good horse and it was just a question of keeping a lid on her really. I actually thought that she'd jump a bit sharper than she did and she's very fast once she's into her stride. We trained her mother, who won the [Listed] Empress S., and she was the same in that she had a little bit of an edge to her, but a lot of talent. The obvious race to look at next is the [Listed] Marygate at York, but I'm not sure that's the right place for her on just her second run with the walk-across the open spaces there. We've probably got other fillies for that race, but we'll discuss it with the owners. I'd say the [G2] Queen Mary [at Royal Ascot] is the race for her. We've got some nice fillies.”

Dramatised, half-sister to a yearling filly by Night of Thunder (Ire) is the third of four foals and first scorer produced by stakes-winning G3 Prix du Calvados third Katie's Diamond (Fr) (Turtle Bowl {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dam of stakes-winning GIII Jimmy Durante S. placegetter Quattroelle (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas Attracts Field of 14

Friday saw the confirmations for Sunday's G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, where the Westerberg silks will be prominent again via Ballydoyle's unbeaten G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Tenebrism (Caravaggio). Representing the powerful combination including Coolmore and Merriebelle Stables, the 'TDN Rising Star' will break from stall five under Ryan Moore alongside her Frankie Dettori-ridden stablemate Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in four. Close by is the Niarchos family's G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in six, next to Everest Racing, Barbara Keller and David Redvers' G3 Prix Imprudence scorer Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in seven as the main contenders are clustered together by fate.

The Fabre Factor

Tom Marquand has built up a rapport with Al Wasmiyah Racing and has been granted the opportunity to ride the operation's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who has 1 1/2 lengths to make up on Malavath from the Imprudence. Surprisingly, Andre Fabre has only sent three fillies over for this Classic despite his much-vocalised love for the Suffolk venue and the legions of potential contenders he has had through his hands. The last two were Intercontinental (GB) (Danehill), who was third in one of the finest editions of recent years in 2003, and the 2014 winner Miss France (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), so Zellie coming to a Classic that has been kind to France down the years is a big deal.

“It is a huge opportunity to be able to team up with her,” Marquand said. “The only worry is that her Group 1 win was on heavy ground and it definitely won't be that at the weekend, but it's a pretty open-looking Guineas.”

Varian's Dark Horse Gaining Momentum

Roger Varian has Eydon in the 2000 and another lightly-raced unexposed one in the fillies' version in Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Ameynah (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who comes here via a seven-furlong maiden at the Craven meeting. From the family of Embassy (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) and Tarfshi (GB) (Mtoto {GB}), she has crept into sight with the high-profile defections of the Frankel fillies Inspiral (GB) and Homeless Songs (Ire) and now rates as a contender in a renewal that is hard to pin down.

“A week or so ago, the Guineas was not even on our mind but in the last seven to 10 days she has made it hard for it not to be,” her trainer explained on Friday. “She is in tremendous form and worked very well at the weekend. On Sunday evening, we'll know whether or not we were right to take the plunge.”

Engelbrecht-Bresges Named New President of the IHSC

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges was unanimously elected President of the International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC) at the online IHSC General Assembly on Apr. 22. The third president of the organisation that was founded in 2013, he succeeds FEI President Ingmar De Vos.

Engelbrecht-Bresges, who will serve a two-year term, said, “I am very grateful to be elected President of the IHSC and must pay tribute to Ingmar, whose leadership at the helm of the Confederation has been significantly important and impactful for global horse sport.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Louis Romanet, Chairman Emeritus of the IFHA, and a previous President and Vice-President of the IHSC. His vision for both the IFHA and the IHSC has laid the groundwork for these organizations to work in harmony for our shared missions.

“The relationship between the FEI and the IFHA has indeed been strengthened during the pandemic, and I look forward to leading the IHSC as President, and advancing our shared ideals and activities, specifically our partnership with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).”

Engelbrecht-Bresges previously served as the standing representative of the IFHA in the IHSC General Assembly and is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), a position he has held since 2007. He also serves as the Chair of the IFHA, and is the Chairman of the Asian Racing Federation (ARF).

“I am very pleased to pass the Presidential baton to Winfried and I know that the IHSC will benefit greatly from his capable leadership,” Ingmar De Vos, who will support Engelbrecht-Bresges as the IHSC Vice-President, said. “With his vast experience in horse racing and his commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of equine and human athletes, Winfried also has a thorough understanding of the needs and expectations of the industry in the years to come.”
