Kingman’s Kingentleman Posts a Career High at Chantilly

Guy Pariente's homebred sophomore colt Kingentleman (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Restiadargent {Fr}, by Kendargent {Fr}) was off the board in all three prior starts at black-type level and lined up for Monday's G3 Prix Texanita at Chantilly as the 27-1 outsider-of-eight coming back off a pair of sixths in last month's G3 Prix Djebel and G3 Prix Sigy. The eventual winner, successful twice at this venue earlier in the campaign, raced under a firm grip behind the leaders early and tanked forward to stalk the pace in second after the initial exchanges. Nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker, he launched his challenge approaching the furlong pole and was ridden out in the closing stages to assert by 3/4-of-a-length from Prix Sigy third Le Cadeau (GB) (Dabirsim {Fr}) for a career high.

“He's a nice horse, but is still immature and has needed time to learn the job,” explained trainer Pia Brandt. “He has had to learn to run between horses and five-and-a-half [furlongs] was too sharp for him last time. He had already won over a mile, but in lesser company, and this trip–in this company–seems perfect for him. He is superbly bred and we hoped to earn some black type, so it's mission accomplished. We do very little with him in the mornings at home and he tells us when he is ready to go again. We shall discuss plans with the owner to see what will be next and this win has opened all manner of possibilities.”

Kingentleman, the fifth of six foals, is one of four winners for MGSW G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte victrix and G1 Diamond Jubliee third Restiadargent  (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), herself a full-sister to stakes-winning G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Restiana (Fr). The March-foaled bay is a full-brother to the unraced 2-year-old filly Steady Woman (Fr) and kin to Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick victor Restiany (GB) (Frankel {GB}). His third dam, Listed Prix Caravelle victrix Restifia (Fr) (Night Shift), is out of a stakes-placed half-sister to G1 Prix de Diane heroine Resless Kara (Fr) (Akarad {Fr}) and hails from the family of MG1SW European champion Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}).

Sodashi Tops Victoria Mile

Juvenile filly champion Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) punched her ticket to this fall's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf with a victory in Sunday's G1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo Racecourse. The top three finishers in Sunday's race also earned automatic berths in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp as well as the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.

Breaking alertly from stall 5, the fourth betting choice settled in along the inside in a close-up fourth before moving slightly outward for the stretch run. Emerging from the pack passing the 200-meter pole, the 4-year-old caught pacesetter Rosa Noir (Jpn) (Manhattan Café {Jpn}) late and drew clear to win by two lengths over the closing Fine Rouge (Jpn) (Kizuna (Jpn}). Resistencia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) was a neck back in third, nosing out the pacesetter.

Sodashi reeled off four consecutive wins at two, capping off the season with a win in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies while earning a championship in the process. Victorious in the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) in her sophomore debut, the striking grey was well beaten in the Japanese Oaks at Tokyo in May but bounced back to take the G2 Sapporo Kinen later that summer. Well beaten in her final two starts of the season in the Oct. 17 G1 Shuka Sho and G1 Champion's Cup Dec. 5, she returned at four with a credible third over the course in the Feb. 20 G1 February S. last time out.

No Nay Never’s Meditate Ascot Bound After G3 Fillies Sprint Success

Coolmore and Westerberg's hitherto unbeaten 2-year-old filly Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never–Pembina {Ire}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) impressed with a 3 1/4-length debut tally tackling five furlongs at the Curragh last month and was equally adept over the six-furlong strip at Naas to secure Sunday's G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. en route to next month's G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot. Positioned in a close second after the initial strides, the 2-1 joint-favourite loomed large passing the quarter-mile marker and came under a late drive to assert superiority nearing the line for a career high on stakes bow. Joint-favourite Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) attempted to wire the field, but was swamped for the minors in the dying strides and ran fourth. Comhra (Ire) (Vocalised) closed with a rattle to finish 1 1/4 lengths off the winner in second, a neck ahead of It's Showtime Baby (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).

“She's very laid back at home, so she's a hard filly to get a read on, and I'm delighted with her,” said Aidan O'Brien. “She won very nicely at the Curragh, she stepped up in distance here and Wayne [Lordan] was delighted with her today. The Sioux Nation filly [Matilda Picotte] went a good gallop, she was good at the Curragh, and we thought she was going to be a big danger. We were delighted that she was able to pick her up, but we weren't sure that would happen and six furlongs obviously suited her. We were hoping to come here and, if everything went well, then have a look at the [G3] Albany with her. We think that's what we'll do, obviously we'll talk to the lads, but I think that's the route she'll be going.”

Meditate, who becomes the 19th pattern-race winner for sire (by Scat Daddy), is the latest of four foals and one of two scorers for Pembina (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is a winning daughter of Listed Prix Imprudence victrix Mahalia (Ire) (Danehill). Mahalia's eight winners include G3 Prix Quincey-winning sire Johnny Barnes (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and G3 Prix de Flore victrix Albisola (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Mahalia is kin to five black-type performers, headed by G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron victor Muroto (GB) (Busted {GB}), and to the stakes-placed dam of G2 Premio Ellington victor and G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club third Ivan Luis (Fr) (Lycius). She is also the ancestress of G1 Criterium International and GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic hero Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), G1 St James's Palace S.-winning sire Most Improved (Ire) and the GSW trio of Lismore (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), Thikriyaat (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Twilight Jet Too Fast In The Lacken

There was no catching Michael and Julia Iavarone and Michael O'Callaghan's Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) in Sunday's G3 Goffs Lacken S. at Naas as he led from pillar to post in a dynamic display of speed. Sent off at 9-2, last year's G3 Cornwallis S. winner was quicker than Ballydoyle's 6-5 favourite New York City (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) at every step and gave generously for Leigh Roche to beat that Listed Committed S. scorer by three lengths. The returning G3 Anglesey S. winner Beauty Inspire (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was withdrawn after going down in the stalls. “He missed six weeks in the spring, we just swam him for six weeks, and if this was three weeks ago he wouldn't have been ready,” O'Callaghan explained. “He's just come right and that makes it all the more impressive to me, knowing how his prep went during the spring.”

Highly-tried at two, Twilight Jet went unplaced in his first four tries at group company before finally getting in the frame in one when third in the G2 Gimcrack S. at York in August. Upped to seven furlongs for the first time when third in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster the following month, the bay was 1 1/2-lengths fifth in Newmarket's G1 Middle Park S. a fortnight later before coming back to that track to take the five-furlong Cornwallis by storm. Only 10th in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar, he put that rare disappointing performance in the past here to crack Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) before denying New York City any prospect of a fistfight.

“He always looked like one that could improve with time, he's a fine big horse,” his trainer added. “He has a bit of class and has a lot of natural speed. He's going to improve for the run today, I've no doubt Leigh is going to tell me that he had a blow. He took plenty of pulling up and galloped down to the third fence down the back before he got him pulled up. In the Middle Park last year, he showed his class but just didn't see out the six furlongs. I think this year he looks strong enough to go to Royal Ascot for the [G1] Commonwealth Cup with a big chance.”

“Michael and Julia Iavarone, whose colours he runs in, used to own Big Brown who won the Kentucky Derby and they bought into 50% of him to go to the Breeders Cup. I'm just delighted that he's come out this year as a three-year-old and he's furnished and he's gone and done it. We always thought he was probably a group 1 horse. He's trained on now over the winter and proved that he justifies being classed as something that's maybe a group 1 horse this year.”

Twilight Jet, who was a €28,000 discovery by Tally Ho Stud at the 2020 Goffs February Mixed Sale before returning a smart profit of £210,000 when purchased at last year's Goffs UK 2yo Breeze Up Sale, is the last foal out of My Lucky Liz (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). She is a half to the stakes scorer Bredenbury (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and the Listed Stonehenge S. winner Go Angellica (Ire) Kheleyf). This is the family of the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Germany and the leading sire Hail Bold King.
