Trueshan Gold Cup Bid Unlikely Due to Unsuitable Ground

Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}), the long-time ante-post favourite for the G1 Ascot Gold Cup, has taken a walk in the betting for the Thursday showpiece after connections said he was unlikely to run at the royal meeting due to unsuitably quick ground. 

A general 5-2 favourite for the race on Sunday morning, Trueshan could be backed at odds as big as 15-2 after the 6-year-old's trainer Alan King revealed that the quick ground was likely to scupper plans of running in the Gold Cup. 

The ground at Ascot was described as good to firm, good in places on Sunday and, with no sign of rain in the forecast, coupled with drying winds and soaring temperatures, King feels Trueshan will not get his desired conditions.

He explained, “I am hugely concerned about the ground and I can't see any rain coming either, looking at all the forecasts. We might hang on in there, but if the forecast is right, I can't see us running.”

Kind added, “It is frustrating, but last year the ground came right for us at Goodwood, in France and at Ascot later in the year.

“Ascot should be run on fast ground, it is high summer at the end of the day. But if I call it wrong once, I could finish him. We are going to try to get it right. We have to try to get it right. It will be a last-minute call, but I would say he is very unlikely to run.”

The field could be further reduced as connections of Scope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who won the Listed Noel Murless S. at Ascot before taking the G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp in October, have also indicated he will be held back.

With doubts around some of the leading players in the Ascot Gold Cup, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) hardened into a general 6-4 chance for the race with Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the race three times on the trot from 2018, available at odds of 2-1 in his bid to regain his crown.

Derby Runner-Up Hoo Ya Mal Supplemented To King Edward VII S.

Ahmad Al Shaikh's Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) has been supplemented for £15,000 to the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot next Friday. Trained by Andrew Balding , the colt was second last out in the G1 Cazoo Derby In Memory Of Lester Piggott on June 4. Off the mark at second asking at York in August, he was second in Doncaster's Listed Flying Scotsman S. a month later and was shelved. He resumed from winter quarters with a third in the G3 Craven S. behind subsequent G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) on Apr. 13 and was second again, this time in the Listed Newmarket S., on Apr. 29.

Also supplemented to the 12-furlong King Edward field is the stakes-placed Kevin Ryan trainee Dark Moon Rising (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), who bears the colours of Mrs. Angie Bailey. At this stage, there are four Aidan O'Brien trainees signed on, including Derby fifth Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), while William Haggas has left in the listed-placed Lysander (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). Roger Varian saddles the undefeated Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the winning Subastar (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

Irish Sires Shine Down Under

The veteran stallions Invincible Spirit (Ire) and Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) each sired a new Group 2 winner Down Under at Eagle Farm on Saturday. First to strike was Irish Sequel (Ire), formerly known as Bashiyr (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the Northern Hemisphere, for trainer Chris Waller. Waller is currently in the UK overseeing the preparation of crack sprinters Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}) and Home Affairs (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) for their Royal Ascot bids.

The gelding, the 70th group winner for his sire, clawed his way to a head victory in the A$200,000 G2 Brisbane Cup over 3200 metres, just besting Through Irish Eyes (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), (VIDEO). The 6-year-old made his first 10 starts in Ireland and sported two victories there before catching Waller's eye for €50,000 at the 2020 Goffs Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale. Bred by His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs, he now races for a large ownership group. Successful in the June 4 Listed Winter Cup over 2400 metres at Rosehill, Irish Sequel was making his first start at the two-mile trip. His dam claimed the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial as a sophomore, and produced the Group 3-placed Balansiya (Ire) (Shamardal) as her first foal. Since foaling the winner, Baliyana (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) has the winning 5-year-old entire Balmari (Ire) (Mukhadram {GB}) and the winning Kodiac (GB) 3-year-old colt Equos Allez (Ire) to her name. A half-sister to G2 King Edward VII S. scorer Balakheri (Ire) (Theatrical {Ire}), her most recent foal is a juvenile colt by No Nay Never.

Later on the card was the A$1.2-million G2 Sky Racing Q22 (Eagle Farm Cup) over 2200 metres, and it was Teme Valley's Numerian (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who prevailed by a length over Kolding (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ), (VIDEO) for trainer Annabel Neasham. Turning into the straight on the lead, the 6-year-old gelding fended off all comers for a first group score and became his sire's 52nd at that level. Prior to racing in Australia, the son of the unraced Kantikoy (GB) (Alzao) who was bred by Annmarie O'Brien's Whisperview Trading, had won the Listed Devoy S. and was placed four times at group level in Ireland. He'd trotted up by three-quarters of a length in the Listed Gosford Gold Cup on May 7. His dam has a 3-year-old colt by Kingston Hill (GB) and a 2-year-old full-brother to the winner named Montesilvano (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). This is the extended family of Classic winner and GI Breeders' Cup Turf second Milan (GB) (Sadler's Wells).

Teme Valley has enjoyed success this year in the G3 Blue Wind S. with Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who ran sixth in the G1 Cazoo Oaks behind Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) earlier this month. The filly's older half-brother and three-time Group 1 winner State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) originally raced for the operation, but was sold on and now bears the colours of the State Of Rest Partnership. He will stand for Newgate Farm in the Southern Hemisphere and Rathbarry Stud in the Northern Hemisphere at the conclusion of his racing career.

Freshman Sire Roaring Lion Off The Mark At Leicester

Roaring Lion (Kitten's Joy) became the latest European freshman sire off the mark when Lion of War (GB) notched a debut win in Saturday's British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden S. over seven furlongs at Leicester.

LION OF WAR (GB) (c, 2, Roaring Lion–Momentus {Ire} {SP-Eng}, by Montjeu {Ire}) raced off the pace in ninth through the early fractions of this debut. Tanking forward from halfway, the 7-2 chance seized control approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to defeat Zara's Return (GB) (Zarak {Fr}) by a comfortable 2 1/4 lengths, becoming the first winner from the lone crop of his freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy). “He was a monster compared to the rest of the field, he was professional to post and knew his job,” said rider Cieren Fallon. “I let him get into a rhythm and when I asked him for his effort he gave it to me. He's got a nice action and it was quick ground out there, but he wouldn't want it any quicker than it was today. It's a nice start and there's a lot more improvement there.” Lion of War is the latest of three foals and first scorer produced by Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial third Momentus (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself a half-sister to stakes-winning G2 Joel S. runner-up Sir John Lavery (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam, G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack Fillies S. victrix Race For The Stars (Fusaichi Pegasus), is kin to four black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Hawk Wing (Woodman).
