“Double Whammy” for Thompson and Tinnakill Crowns Unforgettable Monday

Most Mondays are utterly forgettable. Not in the case of Ian Thompson, manager at Tinnakill House Stud who, along with his boss Dermot Cantillon, kick-started the week in style after Dornoch Castle (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), bred by the pair, confirmed himself a hugely promising colt in winning unchallenged at Ayr.

Shortly after Dornoch Castle coasted home to win for the second time from as many outings, his trainer Mark Johnston revealed that he has some major ambitions for the 2-year-old, mainly the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood.

If you thought things couldn't get any better for Thompson and all of the team at Tinnakill, you thought wrong, because this Monday was about to go from memorable to unforgettable.

As if it were written in the stars, just a few hours later, Dornoch Castle's half-brother Claim The Crown (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who Thomson and Tinakill also bred, landed the feature handicap at Ripon.

All of this excitement was provided by Crown Light (GB) (Zamindar), a mare that Cantillon acquired for just 800gns at the Tattersalls Autumn horses-in-training sale in 2013, and the 11-year-old hasn't missed a breeding season on the farm ever since.

Speaking after the success of Dornoch Castle, a 30,000 euros Goffs Sportsman's purchase, Thompson sensed something special could be in store, and said, “Funnily enough, his [Dornoch Castle's] half-brother Claim The Crown runs this evening so it could be a double whammy. He has been very well-backed so it could be one of those days. Let's hope so.”

It certainly was one of those days. A Monday that Thompson and the team will never forget. But the most exciting aspect of it all is that there will be even bigger days ahead, especially in the case of Dornoch Castle.

“It's exciting,” said Thompson. “The great thing about him is that he's bred to get better. He was a fine big horse when he was younger so everything about him would suggest that this is only the beginning for him.

“The female pedigree would be a middle-distance one and you wouldn't really imagine her to be having lots of 2-year-old winners so it makes it even more exciting.”

He added, “This is what it's all about. The buzz before the race and the excitement after he won. You can't beat it–it's what we do it for.”

This wasn't the only momentous moment for those associated with Crown Light. Less than four years after Cantillon bought the mare, her half-sister Bateel (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) won the G1 Prix Vermeille. But that's not to say that Crown Light has not been hanging onto the coattail of her half-sister.

She has proved herself worthy of an upgrade in terms of the quality of stallion she has visited every season and a decision to support up-and-coming sire Gleneagles (Ire) is proving to be an inspired one with his son Dornoch Castle emerging as a smart prospect for the Johnston team.

Thompson explained, “We thought Gleneagles was a good young sire and everyone was crying out for a nice son of Galileo (Ire). He was the one with the best credentials and it was a commercial decision to back a young son of Galileo who we thought was going to click.

“She also has an Australia (GB) filly foal and is back in foal to Acclamation (GB). Dermot bought four horses at the horses-in-training sale in 2013, all for relatively small money, and she was just 800gns. She had a decent pedigree but wouldn't have been the best physical.”

He added, “Since we bought her, though, her half-sister [Bateel] won a Group 1 in France so we got the mother of all pedigree updates. Not only that, she has produced stock who look a lot better than she does and, as a result, she has been getting upgraded matings every year. Her progeny are delivering on the racetrack and she's really clicked now so it's very exciting.

“She's very fertile. She's had a foal every single year since she was a 3-year-old. That's the one thing you can't really put a price on when you are buying from the horses-in-training sale as you've no idea how fertile they will turn out to be. It's all down to luck.

“I am involved with seven or eight mares now at this stage. I own a few of them myself but am in partnerships with either Dermot or somebody else with the rest. She's the best of them by a mile.”

Harrington Has Irish Oaks Plan For Royal Ascot Winner Magical Lagoon

Jessica Harrington has Classic glory in her sights with Royal Ascot scorer Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is on course for a tilt at the G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh on July 16.

A gritty winner of the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Ascot last month, Magical Lagoon will bid to make the step up to Group 1 company at the Curragh, with Harrington revealing that it's all systems go for the Irish Classic.

“That is the plan,” the trainer said on Monday. “She's a very laid back filly and hopefully she will reproduce the Ascot run. It will be a tough contest, but hopefully she will run well.”

It is only four years since Harrington confirmed her arrival at the top of the flat table when securing a breakthrough Classic victory when Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) landed the Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Magical Lagoon, who also won the G2 Flame Of Tara S. at the Curragh last season, has raced just five times, with that Royal Ascot victory representing her first start over a mile and a half.

July Cup Preferred Target for Perfect Power but Clearpoint Ruled Out of Newmarket

Connections of G1 Commonwealth Cup scorer Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) are favouring a tilt at the G1 July Cup over travelling to France for the G1 Prix Jean Prat, provided the ground is suitable at Newmarket.

Although Perfect Power produced a scintillating performance to win the Commonwealth Cup on ground described as good-to-firm, connections of the Richard Fahey-trained speedster are adamant that the three-time Group 1 scorer wants easier going.

Perfect Power is reported to have bounced out of his Royal Ascot win in tremendous form by Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum, who revealed the July Cup is the preferred target over a trip to Deauvillle this weekend.

Raymond told TDN Europe, “We want to go to the July Cup but a decision will be made after the horse works tomorrow [Tuesday] morning. We know he's going to work well, and while we want to run him in the July Cup, we're just a little bit worried about the ground and how much water they're going to put on it before Saturday.”

He added, “Hopefully they will put lots on it because it's going to be quite warm this week and there doesn't appear to be any rain forecast. We'd prefer to go to Newmarket because the Prix Jean Prat is over seven furlongs. He actually came out of Ascot better than he did the 2,000 Guineas, which is a good sign. He's in very good form.

“He's favourite for the July Cup and, while I presume he'd be favourite for the Prix Jean Prat, we'd rather run him over six furlongs in the July Cup. We're all hoping he runs at Newmarket but, if it comes up like the road, then we could face a difficult decision.”

One horse who definitely won't be lining out at Newmarket this week is the exciting Clearpoint (GB) (Ardad {Ire}), also owned by Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum, who had been as short as 7-2 with some bookmakers for the G2 July S. on Thursday.

Like Perfect Power, Clearpoint is trained by Fahey but a dirty scope means that the promising colt will not put his unbeaten record on the line at Newmarket this week.

Raymond said, “Clearpoint scoped dirty and definitely won't run in the July S. We could look at the Richmond S. as an alternative.”

Clement Puts Faith In Pizza Bianca Bouncing Back From Ascot Disappointment

Christophe Clement has revealed that his first runners at Royal Ascot did not perform as he had hoped but shared how G1 Coronation S. disappointment Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock) could bid to bounce back to form at Saratoga later this month.

Pizza Bianca, whose owner-breeder is celebrity chef Bobby Flay, has returned to America after her eighth-place finish in the Coronation.

Clement admitted that he was “slightly disappointed” with that effort but is confident that there is more to come from his Breeders' Cup winner back on home soil.

“Of course, I was slightly disappointed, but I do not think she ran that bad a race,” Clement reflected. “I just thought she was a few lengths behind the form I was expecting her to show.

“She's back in the States and is doing well. I'm planning on giving her her first work back in the coming week and we will go from there.”

On last season's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine, he added, “There are plenty of races for her to run in, but at the moment she will most probably run in a group race at Saratoga, the first one is the Lake George, which is a group 3 on July 22 and also a race maybe on August 1.”

Clement had no luck with his other runner at the royal meeting as Slipstream (More Than Ready) finished down the field in the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

However, he had nothing but praise for the experience and was grateful for all the assistance he received during his time in the United Kingdom, which included reliving his days as assistant to Luca Cumani as both Pizza Bianca and Slipstream were stabled in the Bedford House Stables his former boss operated from.

“Everything was done to make our life as easy as possible and it was a great experience,” he explained.

“I had five days in Newmarket to train the horses, everything was very smooth and both horses were stabled at Bedford House, which I know very well having spent four years there before and everything was as easy as could be.

“Unfortunately, the two horses were just a bit below form, so if I come back, I will need to find a way to be more competitive.”
