Oscula Does It Again At Deauville

Few horses can defy a penalty in a pattern race at somewhere like Deauville, but few are built like Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) and the stalwart of the Nick Bradley Racing syndicate was at it again on Monday when beating off smart rivals in the G3 Prix de Lieurey. Now the proud bearer of four black-type titles, the George Boughey-trained 3-year-old was under an extra three-pound burden having conquered Goodwood's G3 Oak Tree S. over seven furlongs July 27 which had been her fourth outing during the month.

Out for the second time subsequently, the bay who had taken the G3 Prix Six Perfections at last year's Deauville August meeting was settled in the cat-bird seat early by Ryan Moore and looked in trouble passing two out as the question was asked once again. Finding plenty in customary game fashion, the 11-2 shot battled ahead of By All Means (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) inside the last 100 metres to score by a neck, with Samahram (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who had been an unlucky third behind the winner in the Oak Tree holding every chance this time but finishing in the same spot, another half a length away with no excuses.

“She's a remarkable filly–she's only had the saddle on her back four times inbetween runs, but she's so tenacious and I don't think I'll ever train another horse as gutsy as her,” Boughey said. “She had to travel 12 hours in this heat and she's an advert for Nick Bradley–he wanted to run where I possibly might not have–and for everyone at home, but she was so fresh the other morning I had to put her on the box and bring her. She's very good around a bend, so I'd like to go for the Foret–they would go a good gallop and it can come up soft for that.”

Since debuting last May, Oscula has also won the Listed Eternal S. at Carlisle and Epsom's Woodcote S. and been placed in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at ParisLongchamp, Newmarket's G2 Rockfel S., this venue's G2 Prix du Calvados and Ascot's G3 Valiant S. and G3 Albany S. as well as three listed races. The dam Bisous Y Besos (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) is a half to the dual listed-placed Coeur d'Amour (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) related to the G2 Mill Reef S. scorer and G1 Golden Jubilee S. runner-up Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil), the G3 Sirenia S.-winning half-siblings Brown Sugar (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and Burnt Sugar (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), last year's G2 Mill Reef S. winner Wings Of War (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who was third in Saturday's G2 Hungerford S., and the classy sprinting half-siblings Darkanna (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Logo Hunter (Ire) (Brazen Beau {Aus}). Siyouni’s Al Hakeem Annexes The Guillaume d’Ornano

Bouncing back off a fourth in June's G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, Al Shaqab's homebred 3-year-old colt Al Hakeem (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Jadhaba {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was all heart and regained the winning thread in Monday's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville. The January-foaled bay closed his two-race juvenile campaign with a breakthrough success at Chantilly and doubled his win tally back there on seasonal return before earning his black-type stripes contesting the May 3 Listed Prix de Suresnes at Chantilly in his penultimate start. The even-money favourite was a shade keen through the initial strides and settled into a smooth rhythm tracking the leaders in fourth for the most part. Looming large on the bridle turning for home, he seized a narrow advantage passing the quarter-mile marker and was driven out, despite drifting towards the far-side rail, to subdue the persistent G2 Prix Noailles victor Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}) by a half length in game fashion. Lady Bamford's homebred G3 Prix de Conde runner-up True Testament (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) kept on well in the closing stages to finish 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.

“He ran a very good race in the [G1 Prix du] Jockey Club, he's definitely a Group 1 horse and he will win a Group 1 one day,” insisted trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “It could be this year or next year, so I hope he stays in training as a 4-year-old. This was a good race for him and he won easily in the end. He's a backward horse, but he's strong and I think the best is yet to come. I think he will stay a mile-and-a-half, but we'll see. I'll discuss plans with the Al Shaqab team and maybe the [G1 Prix de l'] Arc [de Triomphe is a possibility. He could go straight there, but I won't be alone in coming to that decision.”

Al Hakeem is the second of three foals and one of two scorers produced by G3 Prix Penelope placegetter Jadhaba (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is one of six winners and the leading representative of GI E.P. Taylor S. third Naissance Royale (Ire) (Giant's Causeway), herself a half-sister to G2 Sun Chariot S. and G3 Musidora S. placegetter Spinnette (Ire) (Spinning World). Descendants of Spinette include stakes-winning GII Beverly Hills H. third Green Lyons (Ire) (Green Desert) and dual Grade III placegetter Tarrip (Green Desert). The January-foaled homebred bay is half to a 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB).

Seven Declared For York’s Juddmonte International

Seven contenders will go forward for Wednesday's G1 Juddmonte International S. at York after final declarations were confirmed Monday morning. Shadwell's all-conquering Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), undefeated through nine starts to date, will seek to take his record to a perfect ten in the £1,000,000 10-furlong feature and will break from stall six. Guaranteed to start as the odds-on favourite for his first attempt at beyond the one-mile trip, his rivals are headed by Prince Faisal's globetrotting Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who has not tasted success in four starts since administering a six-length beating to Baaeed's stablemate Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in last year's renewal. Mishriff will exit from the five hole while Alenquer has drawn gate two. William Haggas is confident Baaeed will take the increased distance in his stride and said, “We've always felt he'd be better over further, but we've got a few people emailing us and casting doubt on whether we should be doing it. I'm looking forward to it, Sheikha Hissa is up for the challenge and I think it would be remiss of us not to give it a go. There's nothing I can do about the competition on the day and if the Mishriff of last year comes to York in the same form he'll be incredibly difficult to beat. He was unbelievably impressive that day. Mishriff ran a very, very good race in the Eclipse and a little bit of a lacklustre race in the King George, so who knows which one will turn up. He'll be a danger as will the others.” Haggas has also declared last year's G1 Champion S. runner-up Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}), who was beaten a nose by Sir Busker (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in last month's G2 York S. over course and distance. They have drawn stalls three and one. Godolphin's G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who finished a head behind Mishriff in Sandown's G1 Coral-Eclipse last month, is the Classic generation's lone representative in the field and will bid to register a fourth win at the highest level in his second try at the distance. He has been allocated stall four. The field is completed by Ballydoyle's G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and G1 Coronation Cup placegetter High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who will start at long odds from the outside berth.

Litt and Solis Acquire Siyouni Filly For €1.4 million At Arqana

A grey filly by Siyouni (Fr) made €1.4 million from Alex Solis and Jason Litt to become the second seven-figure lot at Arqana on Sunday and third overall. Lot 216, out of the Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr heroine Aviatress (Ire) (Shamardal), was consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux. The dam is a half-sister to GIII Seaway S. heroine Marbre Rose (Ire) (Smart Strike), as well as the stakes winner and dual graded-placed Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Under the third dam are the top-level winners Zoftig (Cozzene), Zo Impressive (Hard Spun) and Zaftig (Gone West).
