Goffs UK Release Doncaster Breeze-up Catalogue

The catalogue for the Goffs UK Doncaster Breeze-up Sale, of which last year's Royal Ascot winners Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) and Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) are graduates, was released on Wednesday.

The breeze takes place on Monday, April 24, at Doncaster racecourse, with the sale taking place the following day at 10am.

There are 209 lots catalogued with many notable standouts on pedigree at least. Lot 2 is a Too Darn Hot (GB) half-brother to Group 2 winner Aljamaaheer (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) while lot 3 is a sister to the Group 2 winner Sovereign Debt (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

This sale is responsible for seven Royal Ascot winners in as many years which is why Goffs have utilised the clever marketing of a roulette wheel with the heading, 'Bet On Red,' illustrating the strong chance buyers have of snapping up a top-class two-year-old.

Goffs UK Managing Director, Tim Kent, commented, “For longer than any European breeze-up this sale has been turning heads on the international stage and never more so than in recent years given its outstanding recent performance at Royal Ascot.

The catalogue features the progeny of a number of young and performing sires with the likes of Acclamation (4), Advertise (5), Ardad (2), Blue Point (4), Calyx (5), Dandy Man (9), Dark Angel (4), Exceed And Excel (2), Harry Angel (4), Havana Grey (11), Inns Of Court (7), Invincible Army (4), Invincible Spirit (4), Kodiac (9), Land Force (8), Mehmas (11), More Than Ready (2), Night Of Thunder (3), Saxon Warrior (2), Showcasing (4), Sioux Nation (8), Soldier's Call (6), Showcasing (4), Ten Sovereigns (7), Too Darn Hot (2) etc. all represented.

Subjectivist In Good Order After Saudi Start, But Plans Up In The Air

Dual Group 1 winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was making his first start in over 600 days in the G3 Red Sea Turf H. on the Saudi Cup undercard on Saturday, “seems fine” according to trainer Charlie Johnston.

The Dr. Jim Walker colourbearer, who had won the G1 Prix Royal-Oak, G2 Dubai Gold Cup, and G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in succession in 2020/2021, had made his first start back from an injury-induced layoff at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh on Saturday, although he ran unplaced.

“Of course I was hoping he would run better than he did,” said the Middleham handler. “But given the way race panned out, he was obviously very, very fresh after a long time off and that was more accentuated by the fact that Joe [Fanning] had to light him up a bit to get him over from that draw. Once he'd lit the fuse, there was no going back.”

The 6-year-old entire is a possibility for the G2 Dubai Gold Cup on Mar. 25 or closer to home in the G3 Sagaro S. this spring.

Johnston added, “They were originally due to fly back tomorrow [Wednesday] but that has now been delayed until Friday, so he won't be home until then.

“At the moment he seems fine. We'll get a better handle on things once he's back home, but the initial signs are good, so that's promising at least.

“This delay makes things worse in that there's only four weeks between Saudi and Dubai and now, given the time it's taking to get him home and the time he'd need to leave before the race at Meydan, he'd only be back here for two weeks, so that is obviously going to have to be factored in.

“If he doesn't go to Dubai, something like the Sagaro would seem the obvious next port of call for him, but we'll wait and see the horse when he gets home and speak to Dr. Jim and make a plan from there.”

Jack Connor Named Racing And Analytics Executive For The Thoroughbred Group

Jack Connor was named the new Racing and Analytics Executive of The Thoroughbred Group. He was previously a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) Racing Department senior analyst and a strategy manager at The Jockey Club.

The position is new within The Thoroughbred Group as the organisation develops its remit to provide representation of its five members under UK racing's new industry structure–the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA), the Thoroughbred Breeders Association (TBA), the National Association of Racing Staff (NARS), the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) and the National Trainers Federation (NTF).

“We are pleased that Jack has agreed to join us as we seek to develop the role of the Thoroughbred Group at industry level,” said Thoroughbred Group Chair Charlie Parker. “We are confident that his analytical expertise and previous experience working with industry stakeholders will make him a great asset to us.”

Added Connor, “I'm delighted to be joining the Thoroughbred Group at this pivotal time for the sport. I'm very much looking forward to working closely with the five participant bodies and their members as we help shape and deliver on the industry's strategy.”

Potential Royal Runner in Guineas on Coronation Day

The royal colours, which will now be carried by horses under the joint ownership of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen Consort, could be seen in Classic action on the day of the King's Coronation.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained Slipofthepen (GB), a son of Night Of Thunder (Ire) who was bred by the late Queen, has been given an entry for the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas. Out of the 95-rated Free Verse (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the colt is a fifth-generation homebred and won his sole start with ease at Kempton in November and also holds an entry for the Derby.

Furthering her links to the turf, The Queen Consort is due to visit the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket on Mar. 9.

The first two British Classics of the season, the QIPCO-sponsored 2000 and 1000 Guineas on May 6 and 7, have attracted 62 and 64 entries, respectively.

The quintet of Group/Grade 1 winners Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), Al Riffa (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Chaldean (GB), Little Big Bear (Ire) and Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) heads a strong cast for the colts' Classic. Little Big Bear, a son of No Nay Never, was beaten only once in a five-start juvenile campaign culmination in his victory in the G1 Keeenland Phoenix S., and he is currently holding favouritism to give his trainer Aidan O'Brien a potential 11th victory in the race. Of the British-trained entries, Chaldean is currently third favourite to emulate his sire Frankel (GB) by winning the 2000 Guineas.

Those with an interest in sporting art will be pleased to see an entry for the equine Alfred Munnings (Ire), a Dubawi (Ire) half-brother to the Oaks winner Snowfall (Jpn). The great painter Munnings was himself a regular visitor to Newmarket Heath and spent much time down at the start observing and sketching horses as they were called in to line up. The old rubbing house he used as a makeshift studio is still in existence on the gallops behind the Rowley Mile.

The retirement of the G1 Fillies' Mile winner Commissioning (GB) (Kingman {GB}) means that there is one notable omission from the entries for the 1000 Guineas, with the betting market currently co-headed by Coolmore's Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and the Aga Khan's Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). Another from the O'Brien stable, Statuette, is third in the list to give her young sire Justify a first Classic winner.
